  • Luxury glamping stays on the edge of Yorkshire Dales National Park
  • A five-minute drive from Richmond and 25 minutes from Darlington
  • Lodges have private decks, woodburning stoves and stunning views
If taking in the views in the spectacularly scenic Yorkshire Dales National Park appeals, allow Aislabeck Plantation to do you one better… The family-friendly site is in a wooded valley about a mile from the edge of the Dales (and less than two miles from the North Yorkshire town of Richmond), and its luxury lodges make the most of stunning surrounds with huge glass doors making it a cinch to view all the prettiness without moving a muscle. Of course, exploring the national park itself is still a must, and proximity here to its hiking, biking and riding trails should entice even the least outdoorsy guests. Those craving even more strolls and rambles are well served here too: short routes begin on site, and the long-distance Coast to Coast path is less than 15 minutes’ cross-country walk from base. The site is self-catered, so fuelling energy-filled days is guests’ own responsibility. Supplies sourced in nearby Richmond (five minutes’ drive) can be handily prepared in the fully equipped kitchens of each lodge, and evenings that demand breaks from cooking can be handled with takeaways or a trip to one of the local pubs. Eats dispensed with, the remaining hours of evening can be spent unwinding next to the woodburning stove or out on the lodge’s private deck. Prefer to mingle with the other guests? A communal snug and firepit is in place for cosy outdoor evenings.

Local attractions

There’s no need to travel all too far to start appreciating Yorkshire. With jaunts into Richmond (a five-minute drive, roughly two miles), guests will have a castle to clamber about, Abbey ruins to explore, museums to visit, and scenic falls to photograph or gaze wistfully upon. Days in the great wide open are within easy reach too, even without trips into the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It’s about five minutes to the National Trust’s Hudswell Woods for birdwatching, woodland strolls and riverside picnics, and 20 minutes to the gardens at Constable Burton Hall. Within half an hour, guests can be strolling around the Thorp Perrow Victorian-style arboretum or the folly garden at Forbidden Corner. Chug into the past with a ride on the 22-mile heritage Wensleydale Railway – running between Northallerton and Redmire – which can be joined 20 minutes from base, then stick around in yesteryear on visits to Bolton Castle, Moreton Hall, Middleham Castle, Jervaulx Abbey and Braithwaite Hall, all within half an hour. When urban days beckon, it’s about 25 minutes to the ships, museums and restaurants of Darlington, and 45 minutes to the larger Middlesbrough. Prefer something more pastoral? It’s also 45 minutes from base to tours of the home of one of Yorkshire’s most well-known exports: Wensleydale cheese.
