General

  • Peaceful adults-only site 30 minutes' walk from Pickering
  • On the edge of the North York Moors and 30 minutes' drive to the coast
  • 80-acre farm site with riverside walks and stunning views

Holiday parks don't get much calmer than Westgate Carr Farm, an adults-only site a mile and a half outside the North Yorkshire town of Pickering. This spacious farm in the scenic Vale of Pickering is spread over well-kept land that's bordered by trees, a stream and fields (where the beady-eyed may spot both wild and domestic animals).

Set halfway along a country lane, this award-winning 81-acre site is a few minutes by car from the edge of the North York Moors National Park, arguably one of the finest rambling spots in England (and it's within walking distance of the town centre too, if you've got any energy left…). The north-east coast at Filey or Scarborough can also be reached with roughly a half-hour drive.

Not to be outdone by the scenic local surroundings, Westgate Carr Farm has a fair bit to keep you pottering around base for some of your stay, including a pond and a riverside trail where you're welcome to walk your dog. All kinds of fish and fowl can be spotted in this wildlife haven, so tread softly if you want to be in with a chance of spotting yellowhammers, swifts, kingfishers or trout along the way. It's worth planning to stay up late too, as the dark skies here are prime stargazing territory.

The facilities at Westgate Carr Farm are also handy to have as well: there's an outdoor washing-up area, a luxury bathroom block (with toilets, showers, washing-up area and dishwasher), drinking taps, waste disposal points and a recycling area.

Very friendly welcome. The campsite is beautifully kept and facilities always spotlessly clean. Opportunities to observe wildlife following footpaths from the site and we enjoyed cycling quiet country lanes and visiting cosy country pubs. Very close to Pickering for shops, pubs and restaurants. Good local taxi serive. Excellent wifi.

Level gravel pitch and water tap

    Disliked:

Had to pay extra £1 for shower and electric kept tripping everytime I used kettle.

From the manager...

Clearly you should learn to read; you book a park that clearly states in the listing the EHU is 10A and there is a charge for use of the shower as opposed to increasing the pitch price which is an unfair levy on people who use their own showers.

You then complain about it; if you don’t want to pay don’t book!

Yes you kept tripping the electric and as you well know, you had your heating & hot water, battery charger, fridge and then proceed to use a cheap supermarket kettle rated at 3Kw

Anybody with an ounce of common sense would realise the combined load is too high and the RCD, being an overload safety device, trips to protect

On your arrival you ignored the 2 huge signs directing you to and asking you to check in at Reception but you bring the ignorant folks you are, drove straight down to the campsite and when confronted claimed you didn’t see any signs (which are located immediately in front of vehicles entering the driveway)

You also lef6 us with a legacy of damage - the pitches are 12m wide and have a large entry apron but somehow you managed to drive over our grass leaving deep ruts which need repair.

We have a large TAG AXLE Morelo which we can place on the pitch as do other customers with twin axle caravans but you couldn’t keep to the road with your 6m Motorhome

God help us, what is wrong with people, perhaps you should have gone to Specsavers

Perhaps I should send you the invoice for the repairs now needed ?

We stayed on a fully serviced pitch, with own picnic bench. The site is well tended, the WC block was spotless, recycling well organised. The owner was both helpful and friendly. We walked to the beck, were entertained by the alpacas, sheep, ducks and geese, the views from our pitch were very good, excellent sunrises and sunsets. A little too cold for dark sky photography, hopefully next time. Intend to return.

A super-peaceful, quiet site near Pickering with immaculately presented grounds, dark skies and an abundance of wildlife. Dave and Karen have been creating a lovely setting with plenty of wildlife-friendly features including hedges, a pond, a fairly recent small lake, and a fabulous walk around the farm which takes in the river and the animals (alpacas, sheep, shire horses, hens ,ducks and geese). The pitches are really well-spaced and there is a large open area in the centre which adds to the feeling of spaciousness. Quite rightly they take enormous pride in the site and are always on hand to talk about the farm and to give advice on where to visit.

The amenities are as good as any you will find, and all the pitches are fully serviced.

Pickering is approx. 1.5 miles away so a vehicle is useful to travel further afield.

All in all a fabulous site which we will certainly revisit.

Local attractions

Whether you've come here craving the classic seaside buzz of Scarborough (30 minutes' drive) or prefer more low-key jaunts treading the footpaths and beaches around Filey (40 minutes), you'd do well to squeeze in a trip to the coast or two during your stay here.

Looking inland, the main highlight of the local area has to be the North York Moors National Park (a few minutes' drive), where you can pedal through the trees of Dalby Forest (20 minutes), conquer the canopy at the nearest Go Ape (20 minutes) or head to Grosmont (30 minutes) for steam train rides and cosy village cafés. Make a point of seeing the Howardian Hills too – especially Castle Howard (30 minutes), its undisputed highlight.

For informative days out with just a hint of history, you've got Ryedale Folk Museum (15 minutes), an open-air heritage centre where you can wander around historic buildings and learn about rural life in Yorkshire from the Iron Age to the 50s. Proper medieval buffs, meanwhile, will be pleased to note that this site is within striking distance of York Minster, Clifford’s Tower and St Mary's Abbey (all 50 minutes).
