  • Peaceful adults-only site 30 minutes' walk from Pickering
  • On the edge of the North York Moors and 30 minutes' drive to the coast
  • 80-acre farm site with riverside walks and stunning views
Holiday parks don't get much calmer than Westgate Carr Farm, an adults-only site a mile and a half outside the North Yorkshire town of Pickering. This spacious farm in the scenic Vale of Pickering is spread over well-kept land that's bordered by trees, a stream and fields (where the beady-eyed may spot both wild and domestic animals). Set halfway along a country lane, this award-winning 81-acre site is a few minutes by car from the edge of the North York Moors National Park, arguably one of the finest rambling spots in England (and it's within walking distance of the town centre too, if you've got any energy left…). The north-east coast at Filey or Scarborough can also be reached with roughly a half-hour drive. Not to be outdone by the scenic local surroundings, Westgate Carr Farm has a fair bit to keep you pottering around base for some of your stay, including a pond and a riverside trail where you're welcome to walk your dog. All kinds of fish and fowl can be spotted in this wildlife haven, so tread softly if you want to be in with a chance of spotting yellowhammers, swifts, kingfishers or trout along the way. It's worth planning to stay up late too, as the dark skies here are prime stargazing territory. The facilities at Westgate Carr Farm are also handy to have as well: there's an outdoor washing-up area, a luxury bathroom block (with toilets, showers, washing-up area and dishwasher), drinking taps, waste disposal points (including a drive-over grey waste drain) and a recycling area.

Power optional concrete and grass motorhome site (no awning)

Liked Lovely views, wild life, walk by river, picnic bench, EHU and water at pitch.
Quiet and well ordered site, convenient for touring N Yorkshire, Pickering is a nice town with all amenities.
Spotless toilet facilities, Hope to come back soon.

Disliked Couldn’t have awning at pitch (no bigger pitches available ) which would have been a problem in bad weather but luckily no rain.

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site (no pets)

Liked Clean, well-appointed facilities.
Grounds including pond, picnic area, streamside walk.
Great place for nature in general, + waterfowl, friendly cat and alpacas on site.
Friendly welcome, lots of info about local stuff available on site, plus books, board games.
Level pitches.
Fresh eggs to buy on site.
Quiet, no children.

Disliked Extra charge for a shower that's not long enough to wash your hair.
Pages of site rules was a bit offputting/unwelcoming.
Dark sky site with rules about lights but loads of really bright lights on house/toilet buildings.

From the manager: Your review is interesting.....

We received £19.50 per night for your stay and despite being blessed with a very private 1 of only 2 pitches in a 0.75 acre "paddock" with private water point & picnic table & free high-speed wi-fi whilst enjoying outstanding views of our Barn owls, the fields, pond & Moors you value the price paid as 4/5 = £15.60 per night!!

Included in the price paid is access to our 1 mile long private, part-riverside dog walk/nature trail & pot wash area & heated toilet block

We have paid considerably more than £20 per night whilst camping in a postage stamp sized plot surrounded by other tents!!

You complain about paying £1 for a shower but couldn't wash your hair in 8 minutes. As we do not have gas in our location we have to rely on oil and hot water storage tanks. The showers are limited to 8 minutes to ensure there is sufficient hot water available in all 3 showers rather than one person using it all in 1 shower

Pitchup clearly state there is a £1 charge for the shower which we choose to separate rather than adding it to the nightly charge and if you don't want to pay or are going to complain about the charge after the event, you should book elsewhere

In terms of pages of rules; yes we, like all well managed & organised parks, apply Terms & Conditions to our bookings and these are designed to maintain good order and our USP of a quiet, tranquil park. I can only assume that anyone who feels intimidated by the Terms are those who are not bothered about maintaining our serene, quiet, orderly campsite & the same sentiment applies - if you don't want to enjoy this beautiful part of the countryside & our environment then book elsewhere

Your claim that we have loads of bright lights around the house & toilet block is utterly ridiculous. The toilet block, both internally & externally, is illuminated by a small number of low level lights that are switched on automatically when motion is detected by anyone using the toilet block only. They are off the rest of the time to ensure there is no light pollution

The house has a number of 5w warm light low level wall lanterns as well as 50w motion detected flood lights and it's ludicrous to state that our lights impacted your view of the dark sky not forgetting you were in the tent field over a 100m distant screened by multiple rows of hedging and young trees etc.

Our sensible reviews are testament to the fact we are in a dark sky zone with stunning sunrises, sunsets with views of wide-open dark skies where we see the Northern Lights regularly.

Despite all your dislikes you want to return....this seems unusual & somewhat confusing.. This would support our thoughts that the points you raise as dislikes are grossly exaggerated and actually were not detrimental to your stay in any respect whatsoever.

It's a shame Pitchup accept & publish reviews that contain false & untrue statements.

Excellent site . Very welcoming owners and beautifully surroundings.

Power optional concrete and grass caravan site (premium)

Liked An immaculate and very well maintained site with superb facilities. The site is obviously a labour of love for the owners, Dave and Karen and it shows with all little touches and attention to detail. The peaceful and quiet surroundings belie the fact that it is so close to the lovely old town of Pickering and the many other lovely places to visit in this most beautiful area of Yorkshire.
We had a really lovely and relaxing holiday, hopefully we will return to this lovely site.

Liked Very friendly and organised, well spaced l site. Refreshing to have meters for electricity which meant that we paid very little for the three nights we were there instead of a huge sum regardless how little we use. Easy walk or bike ride into Pickering.

Power optional concrete and grass caravan site (premium)

Liked Large pitch with picnic bench.
Lovely views and dog walk
Immaculately maintained site
Peaceful and tranquil area

Disliked Didn’t mind paying for shower but 7 minutes is not long enough as you loose a minute reaching your preferred water temperature.
Didn’t have enough time to leave conditioner on for 2 mins .
Shower curtain didn’t contain water , especially with window open as it kept blowing with the draught.
Lots of rules to adhere too but this probably made the campsite as peaceful and enjoyable.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your positive comments

Interestingly you cite "lots of rules" as being a negative point but seemingly contradict yourselves by agreeing with our philosophy (as seasoned caravanners of 40 years) that rules are necessary to protect our USP of being a quiet, tranquil park to which many customers return time after time

Despite being aware of the rules you proceeded to invite unannounced visitors to our park who quite astonishingly parked (& left) their car in the entrance to the farm/campsite blocking access to customers and the council's waste collection lorry.

You were also verbally reminded we do not allow visitor's dogs on site but simply proceeded completely ignoring our instructions

We note you state you would visit again but given your complete disregard for our policies which are specifically designed to ensure we do not become a noisy, or communal meeting place for friends & family to meet we will not be welcoming you again to Westgate Carr Farm

May we respectfully request you choose a larger commercial site site without rules next time

Will return

Local attractions

Whether you've come here craving the classic seaside buzz of Scarborough (30 minutes' drive) or prefer more low-key jaunts treading the footpaths and beaches around Filey (40 minutes), you'd do well to squeeze in a trip to the coast or two during your stay here. Looking inland, the main highlight of the local area has to be the North York Moors National Park (a few minutes' drive), where you can pedal through the trees of Dalby Forest (20 minutes), conquer the canopy at the nearest Go Ape (20 minutes) or head to Grosmont (30 minutes) for steam train rides and cosy village cafés. Make a point of seeing the Howardian Hills too – especially Castle Howard (30 minutes), its undisputed highlight. For informative days out with just a hint of history, you've got Ryedale Folk Museum (15 minutes), an open-air heritage centre where you can wander around historic buildings and learn about rural life in Yorkshire from the Iron Age to the 50s. Proper medieval buffs, meanwhile, will be pleased to note that this site is within striking distance of York Minster, Clifford’s Tower and St Mary's Abbey (all 50 minutes).
