Tin and Canvas Glamping: Two chairs if only 2 adults

General

  • Two-acre meadow site next to a steam railway and Pickering Beck
  • A half-hour drive to Whitby; 10 minutes to the North Yorkshire Moors
  • Two minutes’ walk from shops, cafés and pubs on Pickering high street

Can’t decide between town and country? The location of Tin and Canvas Glamping means you don’t need to make a decision – this small and rural site is set in a two-acre meadow but it's still only two minutes' walk from Pickering High Street. Located down an old carriage track, it’s a peaceful spot that's not on any roads; it's likely you won’t find another site so central to Pickering with resident owls and such a countryside vibe.

Stays here have access to lots of places to eat out – and you can forget about the car as there are no long walks back to base. As well as pleasing foodies, this site offers a lot to railway buffs… surrounded by mature trees, the camping meadow is right next door to a station on the heritage North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

Only the meandering Pickering Beck sits between you and the track – so you can bag a train ride across the moors or just appreciate the hiss of steam as a train puffs out of the station. Pickering also makes a smashing base for exploring the North Yorkshire Moors as well as lovely, Roman-and-medieval inspired York (45 minutes).

Just one word of warning though: the camping meadow runs alongside Pickering Beck and in the (very) rare event of a flood, guests will be reimbursed for any lost nights or alternative dates offered – the site owners are signed up to the Environment Agency’s flood-alert system.

Just had four nights in the 1960 Carlight caravan they just don't build them like that anymore the thought & design that they did then amazing. Its a new site so peaceful & tucked away yet is only 5 minutes walk into Pickering high Street good shops & plenty of places to eat & drink. Richie was very helpful when we got there & showed & explained everything to us that we needed to know. New style compost toilet which does not smell there is a science behind it very clean. Great for looking at the stars at night we had a couple of clear sky's there to see them all. We did not get to see the steam trains as they had stopped running but is a great site when they do. It can easily transport you back in time when things were not so high tech & a simpler way of life. We wish them all the best for the future.

Wild camping environment, great experience, compost loo spotlessly clean, adhere to the guidelines of usage and you will be fine 😊 the campsite was amazing and had a real unique feel about it, we arrived for Halloween, the campsite was decorated with Halloween pumpkins etc and we had the joy of having a camp fire and watching the steam train light exhibition. The Owner is really friendly and easily contactable. The field is well drained and flat for pitching your tent, there is a huge part of me that doesn’t want to share this secret find as we would like to keep it all to ourselves, if you like wild camping in a meadow environment this is the place for you. Pickering town centre is literally 2 minutes away with plenty of shops, bars and restaurants.

We stayed in a rented Bell Tent. It was fully furnished with double bed (actual bed not camp bed) and 2 beds. The bedding was great quality, lots of blankets and heater provided so was cosy in a cold week.

The toilets were a lot better than we could ever have hoped and very close to the tent so no worries about night time visits in the dark.

Separate undercover cooking and seating area already set up was fabulous. All facilities and gas all connected.

The owners couldn’t have been more helpful guiding us through everything. Fabulous. Location is brilliant too!

The bell tent was really well designed and cosy - lots of treats provided. Hosts were very helpful and attentive- decorated tent and got wine for birthday celebrations!
Hosts had thought of everything! Fire pit area was lovely and we were able to sit out until late curtesy of a great fire to keep us warm. Amazing scenery on drive over to Whitby! New composting toilet worked well.

Local attractions

Pickering is home of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, so how about a scenic ride on a steam locomotive through gorgeous North Yorkshire Moors landscapes? You can hop off at Goathland (20 minutes’ drive) to tread in Harry Potter’s footsteps, or stay on the train until it hits Whitby (approximately an hour and 50 minutes, or 30 minutes by car) and explore its abbey, fishing harbour and seafood restaurants.

Of course, you may prefer to discover the moors by car – pretty villages include Thornton-le-Dale (10 minutes) and Ampleforth (half an hour) with its gorgeous abbey, while Malton (15 minutes) is a good stop off for foodies, with microbreweries, delis and plenty of dining options.

If you’re holidaying with kids, the Yorkshire coast is famous for its resorts; pick one that suits you best of Scarborough (35 minutes, sandy beaches) or Bridlington (50 minutes, speedboat rides and amusement arcades). Robin Hood’s Bay (40 minutes) is fab for finding fossils, while Runswick Bay (45 minutes) is a hotspot for rock pooling and blowy coastal walks. Kids not tired yet? There are animal encounters and thrill rides aplenty at Flamingo Land Resort (10 minutes) to keep them happy all day long.
