Haugh Rigg Farm: Green all around

General

  • On a small farm with no passing traffic
  • Walking and biking routes very close by
  • A few minutes' drive to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway

Would you like to pitch up among Pickering peace? Farm the folks (and dog) out to Haugh Rigg Farm four miles from town, set in a peaceful and quiet spot at the end of a small track with no passing traffic – you'll probably already know that splendid North Yorkshire scenery is all around too.

Haugh Rigg is a non-working farm that sees peeps escape to it for a peaceful retreat, as it has walking and biking routes very much nearby – again, probably no need to point out the splendid North Yorkshire scenery… It's only a few minutes' drive to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and to yet more hikes and bikes in Dalby Forest.

Amenities include a toilet and shower block, a washing machine, and slides and swings for the kids; a small charge applies for using the showers and the washing machine. Starter packs with wood offcuts, small logs, kindling and firelighters for firepits and barbecues are available to buy on arrival. Please be aware that there are no bins on site, so you'll be asked to take all rubbish away with you.

And finally, as this is a peaceful and hidden-away site, do look at online maps to be sure of where you're going: it's a quiet spot and doesn't shout out its location.

Brilliant little site in an quite little corner of the moors

    Disliked:

Shower you had to pay for (be it only 50p) and only 2 toilets

From the manager...

Hi, many thanks for your review.
Showers are 50p for a reason! If they were free people would be in them 2/3 times a day for x amount of time, then next complaint would be you couldnt get in shower. Very rare people have to wait for toilets as only a small site.
Thanks
Lorraine

The showers and toilets were really good, cleaned often and felt very COVID secure. The freezer to refreeze our ice packs was also very welcome, especially with the heatwave we faced! Our pitch was a very good size. Lovely, quiet location.

    Disliked:

It would have been good to know about the rubbish policy (ie no facilities on site) and the cash requirements for the shower so we could have brought bin bags and cash, but these are minor things in an awesome stay.

From the manager...

Hi, thank you for your review. It does state on site info about rubbish bins and on several reviews. If you had said I would have given you some bin liners.

Lorraine was absolutely amazing! She was waiting when we arrived to show us where to go and constantly checked that everything was okay during our stay.

The pitch was large and there were several toys and slides for my 21 month old to enjoy during our stay!

It rained our last two nights so Lorraine even let us stay a bit longer on check out day so we could dry our stuff before pack up.

She also has a little shop set up on the path to the toilets that was super helpful, we purchased eggs and wood most days, but she also had drinks, marshmallows and ice creams.

The location was very isolated so it was super quiet, the sheep were the only sound we heard, even the other campers were super quiet so 8/9 am wake ups were a pleasant treat!

I would definitely recommend this site, Lorraine’s personal attention to ensuring everyone has a good experience makes this place a very pleasant experience!

    Disliked:

There is only two showers and two toilets, and when it was full we had to wait at times, but they were always kept spotless!

Local attractions

There's quite a bit to do in the old market town of Pickering, a four- or five-mile walk away: as well as plenty of shops and its Monday market, people also come to see its castle, the Beck Isle Museum and the medieval wall paintings at Pickering Church.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (possibly the busiest steam heritage line in the world, trainspotters) starts from Pickering on its beaut run through the moors to Grosmont.

Haugh Rigg Farm has peeps pitching up in an area with plenty of coastal opps too: Flamingo Land is eight miles away, Helmsley 18 and Scarborough 20; if you're off to the coast you'll also likely like a look around Dracula, James Cook and goth centre Whitby.

Must see

  • North Yorkshire Moors Railway (3.4 miles)
