  • Gated dog-friendly site on a farm five minutes’ drive from Pickering
  • North York Moors National Park five minutes’ drive; Whitby 35 minutes
  • Playful farmyard animals on site; communal kitchen with fridge
On the outskirts of the market town of Pickering (five minutes’ drive or a 35-minute walk), Brigham Park Farm is a small family-friendly site on a working farm. There are many things to commend it, not least its location: staying here puts you within an hour of several North Yorkshire attractions – from North York Moors National Park (five minutes) and the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (25 minutes), to a stretch of coastline with sandy expanses like Scarborough (35 minutes) and wildlife sanctuaries like RSPB Bempton Cliffs (55 minutes). Having established that there’ll be plenty to keep you and the brood (and the dog, who’s welcome here) occupied, you might be interested to know what’s on site. You’ll be sharing the grounds with assorted livestock, including inquisitive goats, which the children might enjoy feeding (food is available on request). There’s lots of room for children to chase each other and play tag or kick a ball around – but please ensure they keep to the area where there are no pitches. And if you’re concerned about security, it might relieve your worries to know that the premises are secure and gated. Amenities include a modern and well-maintained toilet and shower block and a communal kitchen with fridge and microwave, plus an outdoor area with picnic tables. Each pitch has a drinking water point. Don’t fancy looking after the campfire or the barbecue? The nearest pub (just over a five-minute walk away) runs themed nights, including Curry Thursdays and Fish Fridays, plus a Sunday carvery.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: The owner was really friendly and helpful, lending us a powerful torch for setting up in the evening. Very handy site for Pickering.

Disliked: The grounds was very wet. The toilet block only had two women's toilets (and one of those was in with a shower). If the site was full that would not be enough. There was a group of young guys on the site who stayed up chatting loudly until 2.45am. That's not ok. If you're going to allow groups on site you need to be monitoring to check they keep quiet at a reasonable time. The road is busy and the traffic noise went on late into the night.

From the manager: Hi, thanks for your positive comments. Unfortunately the area had torrential rain at the time of your stay, therefore the grass was wet. You were offered dryer pitches on higher ground however you choose to disregard our advise and pitch up on a flat area which had not drained so well with the large volume of rain the area took. The Toilet block has 2 men's toilets, 2 men's showers. Then we have 1 woman's family room with toilet and shower, this is so the mother can take children and babies with her. We then have a second woman's toilet and a second woman's shower. The site has ran all summer with fantastic reviews. Our toilet and shower block is clean, the water is very warm and has great pressure. The site is located 150 meters from the road. You had the opportunity to review the location of the site on the map provided by Pitch up. We would advise check the location when planning your next trip. We were not aware of any pitches making noise late in the night, we are monitoring the site but not in early hours of the morning. We do have the site phone on loud so we can answer it in case of emergencies, unfortunately you did not ring this phone to report the noise therefore we were not able to do anything about it.

Liked: We liked the friendly welcome and enthusiasm for their enterprise. The farm is near the town but far enough to be in the country. Camping is in a large field bordered by trees and woodland. The layout allows for plenty of space between pitches with electricity and water available. There is good provision of facilities that are regularly cleaned. Two inquisitive Pygmy goats and a pair of ducks roam freely which added to the charm of our experience overall.

Liked: The warm and helpful welcome from the owners and the company of the delightful dogs and gorgeous goats absolutely made my visit. Plus there’s pigs and horses to visit. Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Friendly site staff. Large pitches. Friendly goats wandering about (food available from the owner). Cars were kept on the car park, not by tents (there's wheelbarrows available to carry gear) so there's a bit more freedom for kids to run about. 5 mins drive from Pickering.

Disliked: Toilet block is a bit small if the site is busy

Liked: Everything about our stay was perfect. The hosts were amazing and willing to help with our requests. You can really see the hosts passion and enthusiasm for what they offer. The toilet block was modern and clean. Good amenities including a kitchen and social area. Campfires and wood available on request. There are many friendly animals around the site - which initially sold it to us and on arrival it did not disappoint. There are 2 very friendly dogs, pigmy goats, pigs, ducks and horses! The camp site itself was close to so many good walks. Mallyan Spout Waterfall near goathland is a must! We will definitely be back in Easter.

Local attractions

From Pickering you can catch the North Yorkshire Moors Railway for a heritage train ride through the distinctive moorland landscape. Disembark at Goathland (which might look familiar if you’ve seen the first Harry Potter film) or ride all the way to the Whitby terminus. Flamingo Land Resort (10 minutes’ drive) has thrill rides like multi-looped roller coasters and vertiginous drop towers, plus family-friendly attractions like tractor rides and a soft-play area in the shape of a pirate ship. On hot days, the kids might be drawn to the water-play zone, and there’s also a zoo with penguins, lemurs and other animals. Whitby (35 minutes) is known for the hilltop remains of a 14th-century abbey, which is said to have inspired Bram Stoker to write Dracula. After visiting the house where Captain James Cook (of South Pacific exploration fame) lived as a young man (now a museum), make your way to the Whalebone Arch for views over the harbour.
