Spacious pitches

  • Spacious pitches near Pickering in the North York Moors National Park
  • Whitby, Dalby Forest and Castle Howard within 35 minutes' drive
  • Small café and luxury bathrooms on site; dogs and kids welcome
On the southern edge of North York Moors National Park – and a geographically sensible choice for those intent on a hiking holiday – Bank Top Camping is a family-friendly site a 15-minute drive from Pickering. Woodland walks can be accessed directly from the site, but it’s not just the ramblers who find the location convenient: watersports enthusiasts can reach the North Sea coast in less than one hour, with places like Whitby (40 minutes’ drive) and Scarborough (50 minutes) among the top local choices. Spacious pitches sit on the edge of a large field fringed by tall, leafy trees, and they come with electric hook-ups and views over the Vale of Pickering, plus oodles of room for children to run around and play games. The kids might also enjoy making friends with the resident animals; speaking of which, while dogs are welcome guests at Bank Top Camping, they should be kept on a lead while on site. A small café sells hot drinks, locally made ice cream and a selection of home-baked goods (mmm… muffins), as well as honey produced on site by hard-working bees that you can watch at the fascinating Observation Hive. If you’re into making your own food, there’s a communal fridge freezer to store any essentials, and a sheltered washing-up area with plenty of hot water. Other facilities include a toilet block with luxury touches such as underfloor heating (blissful, on a parky Yorkshire morning), hot-water showers and hairdryers. There is also a laundry room with a washing machine and tumble dryer.

What customers say

This is a beautiful, well-maintained campsite in a peaceful rural location, praised for its excellent facilities, including spotless toilets and hot showers. Owners are frequently described as friendly, helpful, and welcoming. Pitches are spacious and generally level, offering plenty of room. The site is well-located for exploring North Yorkshire, with many local attractions and walking routes nearby. Visitors enjoyed the quiet atmosphere, stargazing opportunities, and on-site offerings like coffee and ice cream. While most reviews are overwhelmingly positive, a few mentioned occasional noise from wind or nearby roads, and limited shelter in exposed pitches.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked Very peaceful and quiet location with great views.
Easy access to some fine walks across the moors.
Host was very helpful and welcoming.
The site is very well organised and has all required facilities.
The whole site was very well kept, and the shower blocks were spotlessly clean.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked Very generous pitch; very quiet; dark sky all night. Washing facilities very clean and well maintained. Welcoming and friendly owner.

Disliked Would've liked the little coffee/sitting room to have been open and self-service so I could boil a kettle and eat my breakfast.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for your review. The area which you refer to is a little cafe selling drinks, honey, ice cream and venison products. It was open during your visit but is not practical to leave it unlocked, as is the norm for any retail outlet. There are optional electric hook-ups on all pitches for campers who wish to boil kettles.

Electric optional grass pitch (large)

Liked The area was quiet and remote not a lot to do. The site is ideal for an overnight stop if travelling some distance and if you like a short stay with nothing around.
The camp site did sell eggs, ice cream and local meats but thought they were pricey but a good idea for if you needed some food items.
I personally wouldn’t stay there again as there are friendlier sites around and closer to other amenities.
I have more dislikes than likes for this site.

Disliked 1. The pitch was on a slope so made cooking difficult as I had to wedge something under the burner.
2. The local pub was a mile walk but is closed on Monday and Tuesdays and the rest of the week doesn’t open until 5pm. 3. No shops nearby or bus route.
4. To the nearest pubs, coffee shops and supermarkets was 14 miles walk round trip. (10 min drive if you want to drive)
5. Toilets and shower could have been cleaner.
6. Not that dog friendly as we had to keep keep the dog within our pitch even though he was on a long lead and wanting to play with his ball, the children on site could play wherever they wanted with their ball.
7. Some children were running around and winding the dog up and not keeping to their pitch as per the rules.
8. We had family visit us for a few hours, and the owner who I thought was rude pointing at their car to say who’s car is this if you have guests there is a charge, I asked what that charge was it was £3. Our family thought she was rude and they were taken back by what she said. No idea why she had to charge anything as they were in our tent having a cup of tea. They could have even parked on the road and not on our pitch.
9. The site is just a farm house field with cut grass, very basic.

From the manager: I am sorry you did not enjoy your stay; I note that you stayed for the full 3 nights that were booked.
In response to your comments:
1. We were not busy during your visit - I offered you the choice of pitches - around 15 were available - you chose your spot - pitch 4, the largest on the campsite with a slight slope. You could have chosen a flatter one.
2. 3, 4. I am not responsible of your choice of campsite and the local amenities.
5. Your comment does not correspond with the majority of all other reviews.
6. You ignored campsite rules with respect to pets. You allowed your large dog (a Victorian Bulldog I believe) to wander around freely. When I asked to put the dog on a lead, in accordance with campsite rules, the lead was around 30 ft long and your dog could wander across the access track and on to other pitches. It is not acceptable that any dog can wander about off pitch. Other campers complained about your pet as their children were intimidated by it.
7. There is no rule that stops children playing off their pitch.
8. My campsite rules on Pitch Up state: 'Visitors must register at reception and pay their fee' - you did neither. Numbers of people on site are controlled for security and to maintain peace and quiet.
9. The campsite is as advertised.

Really nice base for exploring the coastal resorts.

Local attractions

Reward the kids for not complaining (much) during your hikes through the moors by taking them to Flamingo Land Resort (20 minutes’ drive), with thrill rides and family-friendly attractions, plus a zoo with big cats, primates and farmyard animals. Or head to Dalby Forest (25 minutes), where a Go Ape park has treetop adventure courses for all ages. A spectacular country mansion in the equally spectacular setting of the Howardian Hills National Landscape, Castle Howard (35 minutes) might look familiar from TV dramas such as ‘Bridgerton’ and ‘Victoria’. Elegant interiors include the Chapel, with its opulent pre-Raphaelite decoration by the likes of William Morris. Stroll around the harbour at Whitby (40 minutes), grabbing fish and chips or embarking on a coastal cruise to see seals and (if you’re lucky) dolphins. Back on dry land, climb the 199 Steps leading to the atmospheric ruins of Whitby Abbey, which are said to have inspired Bram Stoker to write ‘Dracula’.
