  • Pub site with 17th-century inn and moor/vale views
  • Easily reachable from the A1, two miles from Masham
  • Walks starting directly from the site: route copies available
Here’s a site you’ll be happy to swan around: Black Swan Holiday Park is in a hidden spot in the Yorkshire Dales and just next to a 17th-century inn dishing up home-cooked food among views of the moors and the Vale of York. Hurrah, hooray and pass the Black Sheep bitter. No eating like a bird either: the Black Swan food is properly portioned with plenty to pick from, and there are several veggie options as well as themed evenings such as steak nights (occasionally with non-local samplings like springbok or ostrich). The bar meals are served at lunchtime, with a bistro in the evenings and a roast lunch on Sundays with locally sourced meat and homemade desserts, alongside local and guest ales. (As you can probably imagine, all this is rather popular, so you'd do well to book yourselves a table ahead of your trip as space can't be guaranteed otherwise.) Getting swanwards is simple: the pub is easily reached from the A1 and is in the old village of Fearby, two miles from Masham. Once there, two walks start directly from the site; ask staff for copies of the routes. Black Swan guests have access to a shower and toilet block.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Lovely little campsite. We were greeted on arrival by the owner who showed us to our pitch giving us an option of the sunny side or the shady side as we had dogs.

The site is small but had everything we needed. The pub onsite was ideal after a long day of walking and exploring the Yorkshire Dales. The food was lovely.

I was worried with only two showers in the ladies block that we would struggle to get a shower on the Saturday as it was bank holiday weekend and most pitches were full, but it wasn’t a problem. We stayed 4 nights and I only waited two minutes at most for a shower. Most mornings I walked straight in no waiting.

Toilet block was clean and facilities fine.

We would be happy to return.

Disliked: Nothing all good.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: The views

Disliked: Unfortunately we won’t be in again, the grass pitches are to close together, dogs not on leads which really should be clearly signed hence dog poo in lots off areas . The toilets are not cleaned daily , there was no sign off this and it was a bank holiday , two showers is not enough

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Early in season so had choice of pitches which are a good size, need levellers as field slopes. Quiet, peaceful site during the week.
Various walks from campsite but you do need a map or OS app as some footpaths rarely used! Easy walk into Masham.
We walked each day and totalled over 30 miles. We were able to walk to Masham, Druids Temple (very good cafe) along with Masham again, and on the last day Jervaulx Abbey passing Brymor ice cream parlour on the way, a perfect stop! Cafe not open at Jervaulx!
The walk to Jervaulx Abbey was the least travelled which included having to climb 2 fences as no footpath access, a hard dry ploughed field and an interesting route through a wood - under and over branches to avoid a boggy area! But the scenery was beautiful, we saw and heard numerous birds.
Our first trip away this year. Yorkshire is a beautiful county and the beer in this area is epic and well earned after a long walk.

Disliked: Owner not the friendliest! Told us where we could park but no other info.

Pub open limited hours - had to look on website. Need to book for food at weekend.
In the campsite information on pitchup it says walk information available from pub - no, we were told it’s online only.

I don’t think the toilet block was cleaned while we stayed (4 nights).

On the saturday, the last night of a lovely peaceful stay someone was playing music until 4am!!! A shame when you have a long drive home.

Local attractions

Those Black Swan walks first: the pub team has put together details of two local walks direct from your pitch, including a five-mile trek to 19th-century folly The Druid’s Temple, built by a local squire as a mini Stonehenge. There are walks for all levels in this part of the Yorkshire Dales: if you’re feeling fit, you can stride off into the moorland; if not, ask about the easy riverside strolls nearby. Most Ordnance Survey paths around here are accessible but some aren't well used, so hone your navigational skills before setting off. Masham is easily reached by foot and has Georgian architecture, two breweries and one of the biggest markets in the area (on Wednesdays and Saturdays); bike hire is available here too. The Black Swan can be used as a base for beetling around the Yorkshire moors whatever your activity level after a few Yorkshire ales the night before: high ropes adventure courses are at nearby Aerial Extreme, clay pigeon shooting within a mile and off-road 4X4 driving/quad biking nearby for the energetic. The 18-mile route of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway or exploring the many nearby market towns are topping options for the more moderately minded. You may of course have no say in deciding your activity levels/options if the kids are with you; if so, you’ll probably end up at Lightwater Valley eight miles away, home of the country’s first Angry Birds activity park and with a farm park and falconry. And even culture-resistant kids should like the Beamish living museum in Co Durham with its regular events and costumed guides…
