  • Spacious pop-up site at the Castle Howard Traction Engine Rally
  • In the grounds of Castle Howard, 35 minutes’ drive from York
  • Vintage autos, crafts stalls, fairground, food trucks and licensed bar
Trundle along to Camping at Castle Howard Traction Engine Rally, a large site 15 minutes’ drive from Malton market town that does exactly what it says on the tin: gives attendees at the Castle Howard Traction Engine Rally a place to pitch up for the duration. This pop-up site is sticking around the grounds of the spectacular Castle Howard for just five days and there’s plenty to keep guests busy during that time: as well as the steam engines, tractors, and classic cars and motorbikes that’d be expected, there will be trade stands to poke around, crafts and food to sample and vintage fairground rides to get all in a tizzy over. The best bit? Entrance to the rally is included in the cost of the stay… Peckish moments and outright hunger are easily dealt with without having to traipse across half of Yorkshire – plenty of food trucks and catering outlets will be dotted around festivities, barbecues are allowed on the site itself, and there’s a licensed bar with a live band on the Saturday and Sunday evenings. If you need a little break from the rally, there’s loads else to do hereabouts: in the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and 25 minutes from North York Moors National Park, there are footpaths and bridleways aplenty, and museums, zoos and pretty Yorkshire villages within easy reach.

Local attractions

Days away from the Traction Engine Rally should start within very easy reach indeed: at Castle Howard. Made recognisable by television and movie adaptations of Brideshead Revisited, the spectacular 18th-century stately home should certainly be explored, and there are 1,000 acres of grounds – with woods, gardens and a boating lake – to traipse around too. It’s not the only big pile hereabouts either, as Nunnington Hall is 15 minutes’ drive away and Beningbrough Hall is within 40. Otherwise, stick to history but leave old houses behind with stops at Eden Camp or the stunning ruins of Rievaulx Abbey, both within half an hour of base. Foodies are well catered for nearby, as the site’s 15 minutes from Malton and its artisan producers, food shops, cookery school, restaurants and food tours. There’s a reason it’s known as Yorkshire’s food capital, after all... Prefer to go whizzing around the country? The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is 25 minutes away (keep eyes peeled for a glimpse of Harry Potter’s Hogsmeade station from the train), and the high-octane rides of Flamingo Land and ziplining at Go Ape are both within half an hour.
