  • A 15-minute drive from Malton and 35 minutes from York
  • Alpaca treks available on site daily; drive to pubs and restaurants
Put down roots in a peaceful bell tent for a little while… Butterwick Alpaca Retreat is a gorgeous spot with a peaceful tent that sleeps six people. Overlooking the site’s alpaca fields, but safely fenced off, there are views of the alpacas and alpaca treks available on site daily. The sounds of the countryside and the farm animals are your daily soundtrack. The quiet spot is well geared towards relaxing and quality time, that’s for sure – particularly if you take a stroll around the sensory farm area to meet the animals (not just alpacas but also lambs, goats and a flock of ducks and hens). As for your routine, you might want to use the microwave, kettle and toaster to prepare some breakfast, and then head out to Malton 15 minutes’ drive away. Known as the food capital of Yorkshire, it’ll give you a good introduction to the Yorkshire foodie scene… The same can be said of the local pubs and restaurants, which are within 10 minutes’ drive of the bell tent. Butterwick Alpaca Retreat is 50 minutes’ drive away from the coast for simple seaside amusements and 35 minutes from York if you’re looking for a historic day out too.

Belle bell tent

Liked: The hosts were wonderfully friendly and went out of their way to ensure my 5 year old was involved in alpaca farm life. The setting itself was peaceful, comfortable and well equipped with a kitchen block for brews, fridge, microwave etc with the option to purchase eggs from the resident chickens. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the stroll with the Alpacas was just lovely

Belle bell tent

Liked: This is the most beautiful spot and a charming experience. One spacious tent so it’s all yours, but with clean facilities and friendly hosts close by. Anna and Chris made us so welcome, and the children were able to help feed the animals and get up close to the alpacas, goats, sheep, ducks and chickens. We loved having a BBQ dinner and marshmallows over the fire pit. Watching the sun come up the next morning with alpacas and rabbits in the next door field was unforgettable. No shower but clean toilets and a sink, toaster, kettle etc and lots of useful equipment provided. You can buy freshly laid eggs from the chickens you’ve helped feed. As we left a group of children with special needs were arriving and we could see how happy they were to be amongst the animals - delightful to watch how Anna uses the farm for wider community benefit. This is a very special place and we’d come back in a heartbeat.

Belle bell tent

Liked: We visited here with our 3 children aged 6, 9 & 16. This place is heaven, we cannot wait to visit again! Anna & Chris are exceptional hosts, the business & home they have created is unique, inviting, peaceful, I could go on. The tent was amazing with equally amazing views of the animals, it was comfortable, cosy & there was plenty of room. We absolutely loved our weekend at the retreat & will be returning.

Belle bell tent

Liked: The entire time away! We absolutely loved our time at Butterwick Alpaca Retreat. Anna and Chris are lovely, so welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. The bell tent was spotless and was great having a toilet near by. We took the Alpacas trekking which was so much fun. Both my children (11&8) had a great time and Anna answered the many questions they both had! I would highly recommend a visit here, both my children were able to explore and assist Anna in feeding the animals. They had a great time and it was very relaxed. We went to the local pub that was recommended a few miles away and the food was lovely. Would definitely highly recommend and we will definitely be happy to go back!

Disliked: Nothing!

Belle bell tent

Liked: We had an absolutely amazing stay at Butterwick Alpaca Retreat and loved every minute of our time there. Anna and Chris were really welcoming, friendly and thoughtful. The tent was beautiful and everything in the way of utensils, crockery etc was provided. All the facilities were really clean and tidy and we felt really comfortable staying there and there was plenty of room inside the tent for our family of 5. Our eldest daughter has autism and struggles in lots of ways so it was absolutely ideal for us to be the only family on the site, this meant we didn't need to worry about how our children, especially our eldest, might be coping, and we were able to relax knowing we wouldn't be disturbing or bothering anyone else. It was an amazing treat for us all to be able to spend time with the gorgeous alpacas, and it was lovely to be able to chat with Anna as she looked after the animals and find out more about them. Our children really really loved their time with the alpacas and we really appreciated them being able to hang out with these gorgeous animals. Our trek on Monday morning was really good fun too and enjoyable for us all. We really have nothing negative at all to say about our stay here, we loved every minute, and really really hope we will be able to have a return visit next year. We would recommend this site very very highly to other people, and especially if your family has particular needs or challenges as we do, it is an amazing place to stay and we felt like our needs were completely understood and catered for. We feel very very blessed indeed to have been able to spend time here. Thank you so so much to Chris, Anna and the alpacas!!
