General

  • Golfers' site with 18-hole course, 10 minutes' drive from Leyburn
  • Within 20 minutes' drive of Richmond Castle and Jervaulx Abbey
  • Traditional Yorkshire pub on site serving food, local ales and wine

Golf fans, Akebar Park near Leyburn in North Yorkshire will suit you down to a tee: an 18-hole course sits here for lengthy hours of teeing off.

History fans, Akebar Park will suit you down to a tee too, as it's within easy reach of some of North Yorkshire's top history highlights – Richmond Castle and Jervaulx Abbey are within 20 minutes – and the park's between the historic houses, museums and ancient landscapes of the North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales national parks.

Also sorted are nature fans – Akebar's in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty; kids – there's a play park on site, and dogs – a three-acre canine exercise area awaits.

Akebar Park has been run by the same family for over 35 years and was recently taken over in ownership and management by the family's latest generation, who have big plans for the site; there's already been an extensive renovation of the main shower and washroom facilities.

Also on site is the lovely looking stone-built Friar's Head pub and restaurant serving bar lunches and evening meals – beer garden, blazing log fire and Yorkshire ale fans, this will suit you down to a tee too.

Stayed here for 2 night and 3 days. I must say that I was very impressed with the site. We stayed in out new tent to try it out before next season hence the short stay.
The campsite is immaculate and very well maintained, grass pitch was very leave and there was plenty of room between pitches. The facilities are fantastic, plenty of toilets and showers with hot running water and also in a warm environment. The showers, toilets and washing areas were kept very clean and tidy.
There is a big playing area for the kids which is away from the main pitches so no issues with stray balls etc. We had a walk around the site when we got there and there are plenty of things to look at. The kids soon were of on their own adventures finding routes around the site and bridges over the streams.
We also had a walk up to the pub which had a roaring log fire to keep us warm. Helpful staff and felt very wlecoming.
Overall we were very happy with the site and will be returning in the summer holidays next year.

    Disliked:

My only recommendation would be for a larger shop stocking more camping supplies and food, and of course gas supplies for us tent users :)

It's a really pretty site, and the pitches are a great size. The park is great for kids, our 7 year old son loved it, and made friends. The wash blocks were really warm which was great., showers were hot (push button, but last a while) The Friars Head pub is a really pretty pub, and serves great ale. The garden is great for kids to run around and has seats outside for dry days.
It's in a great location for exploring Yorkshire.

    Disliked:

The toilet blocks were a bit tired and grubby, bins not emptied. Also someone reviewed it and said that the soap dispensers were in an odd spot, and I read that and thought how bizarre......nope they are really in an odd spot, only 2 dispensers stuck at one end.
We ate in the Friars Head and thought it was a bit expensive for the actual food served, nothing to shout our about.
If arriving at dusk as we did, the tent pitch numbers are a bit hard to spot on the floor, we were directed to the last pitch on the map, but we ended up on an overflow pitch, there was an extra one, the warden though was very friendly when he told us, and we stayed on that pitch which was good as it was further from a large group who were a bit noisy at night.
There are A LOT of mobile homes on site, more than it shows on the website, and does give it a bit of a lived in feel, with lots of regulars staying on site.
One thing I did find odd and have never experienced on other sites, we were charged to freeze our ice blocks, 10p a block. Small thing but odd.

Local attractions

Explore abbeys, halls and castles, pick up local produce at farmers' markets, or take off into the countryside for days of hiking, biking and fishing: all are handy from Akebar Park.

Head to Helmsley and East Witton near Ripon for Revaulx and Jervaulx abbeys, both founded in the 12th century by Cisterian monks and both among the wealthiest abbeys in the land until being dissolved by egotistical Henry 8.

Jervaulx Abbey was also the place where Wensleydale cheese originated way back in 1150; see how it's made and have a hefty sample at the Wensleydale Creamery and Visitor Centre near Hawes, then double back on your creamy trail to the Brymor ice-cream dairy near Jervaulx Abbey.

At Leyburn town, find more cheese and heaps of other tasty things at the farmers' market on the fourth Saturday of every month, and heaps of tasteful bits and pieces at its weekly Friday market, antiques centre and art and jewellery galleries. Leyburn's fitness and squash centre allows guests and also has a pool.

On the outskirts of town, permit the kids a day out among the chambers, tunnels and many hidden surprises at fabulously odd The Forbidden Corner in Tupgill Park.

Must see

  • Jervaulx Abbey (3.2 miles)
