Akebar Park: Pitches

General

  • Family-friendly park near Leyburn with 18-hole golf course on site
  • Within 20 minutes' drive of Richmond Castle and Jervaulx Abbey
  • Dog-exercise area available

Golf fans, Akebar Park near Leyburn in North Yorkshire will suit you down to a tee: an 18-hole course is on site here for lengthy hours of teeing off.

History fans, Akebar Park will suit you down to a tee too, as it's within easy reach of some of North Yorkshire's top history highlights – Richmond Castle and Jervaulx Abbey are within 20 minutes – and the park's between the historic houses, museums and ancient landscapes of the North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales national parks.

Also sorted are nature fans (Akebar's in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty), kids (there's a play park at this fab family-friendly site) and dogs (a dog exercise area awaits for running about).

Akebar Park has been run by the same family for over 35 years and was recently taken over in ownership and management by the family's latest generation.

Beautiful location, very clean site (toilet and shower block), area well kept. Will definitely be back, despite the dislikes.

    Disliked:

Although we had put the size of our tourer, we found the spot difficult to get out of as pitch opposite us was close.
I also had to tell staff about a dead rat that was near the stream, as to be expected as you’re never too far from a rat, especially by water, just not nice to see.

Clean, well kept toilet and shower block, excellent children play areas, football pitch, table tennis arena, shop and pub. Very well manicured grounds particularly on the scale of the site.

Everyone is very friendly and welcoming and the staff also.

Really good experience and local attractions and activities helped. Visited the Wensleydale show, chocolate factory and waterfalls. Still loads to do just didn’t have the time.

    Disliked:

Very big site which isn’t an issue really. It grew on us. We however were lucky with the pitch we had which was privately situated. Others are quite exposed and closely packed in so recommend bringing a wind break to create your own seclude if a more open pitch is the case. Oh yes. Wi-Fi was useless. 02 worked but apparently voda phone is best.

Local attractions

Explore abbeys, halls and castles, pick up local produce at farmers' markets (pop into reception on site to find out details), or take off into the countryside for days of hiking, biking and fishing: all are easily done from Akebar Park.

Head to Helmsley and East Witton for Rievaulx and Jervaulx abbeys, both founded in the 12th century by Cistercian monks and both among the wealthiest abbeys in the land until being dissolved by the egotistical Henry VIII.

Jervaulx Abbey was also the place where Wensleydale cheese originated way back in 1150; see how it's made and have a sample at the Wensleydale Creamery and Visitor Centre near Hawes, then follow up with a sweet treat at the Brymor Dairy ice cream parlour near Jervaulx Abbey.

At Leyburn town, find more cheese and heaps of other tasty things at the farmers' market on the fourth Saturday of every month, and heaps of tasteful bits and pieces at its weekly Friday market, antiques centre and art and jewellery galleries. Leyburn's fitness and squash centre allows guests and also has a pool.

On the outskirts of town, permit the kids a day out among the chambers, tunnels and many hidden surprises at fabulously odd The Forbidden Corner in Tupgill Park.
