Philpin Farm: Great location

General

  • Small quiet family-run site on a hill farm in the Yorkshire Dales
  • Top spot for the Yorkshire Three Peaks with direct access to trails
  • Cooked breakfasts, packed lunches and homemade cake sold on site

Three peaks before breakfast? That might not be possible (let alone pleasant) but the paths to two of the famed Yorkshire Three Peaks start less than five minutes' drive away from this quiet site on a family-run hill farm in the Yorkshire Dales.

Philpin Farm is a 10-minute drive from Ingleton and the Ribblehead Viaduct, on the route of the Settle-Carlisle Railway. The site is small and two-tiered, with accommodation areas at the bottom and top of a small hill (the car park is near the top area as no cars are allowed on the field).

The farm's barn is available for eating and mingling in, and it's home to a snack bar on weekends; you can also order cooked breakfasts and packed lunches, buy homemade cakes, even socks, gloves, hats and rain ponchos if you've come under-prepared.

Barbecues are allowed on site if raised off the ground (strictly no fires). The only other strict rule is the farm's no-noise policy at night: please let everyone savour the peace of this very special place.

There's a welcoming local pub two miles down the road, plus shops and a chip shop in Ingleton.

    Location, peaceful, clean shower/toilet block.
    Very reasonably priced pitches.
Option to order breakfast/packed lunch in advance.

    Disliked:

Advertised with free wi-fi, but only available in the communal barn which isn't open 24 hrs.
Would prefer site with parking next to pitch, had to make several trips back and forth to car when setting up/taking down.

This was our first time camping and we chose this campsite as it was close to some activities we had booked such as ingleton waterfall trail and white scar cave. The site only had two other tents on the site when we stayed. Both husband and wife work on site on the farm and made sure we knew about all the facilities on site. To my shock they had an indoor shower and toilet block with two of each inside, as well as more toilets in the barn next door. The showers were very spacious with lockable doors and was perfect after a long day walking. There is free WiFi in the bar with seating it is strong enough to stream Netflix but very slow if you want to download something to watch later. There is a vending machine in the barn too providing some cold drinks and snacks. The site also offers cooked breakfast and sandwiches at an extra cost that has to be ordered the night before. The full English is a very reasonable price of £6 we didn’t have it as we brought breakfast with us but if you didn’t at least you can have a nice meal at a sit down table.

The site looks upon an amazing view of a local mountain possibly one of the peaks as we was told the trail was nearby, along with lots of sheep to watch too.

Overall great site with great facilities at a very cheap price would highly recommend and would use again if we came back

The showers worked great and were spacious--plenty of room to put your things to keep them dry. I like the big showers. Good choice! Restrooms were clean and comfortable. The lockers to keep phones and devices safe: BRILLIANT! I wish every campground had that.

Even though it rained a bit, the pitches didn't get damp or mucky.

We arrived when the snack bar was closed, but they were kind enough to make us sandwiches, and there were some vending machines so we had something to eat!

It was nice to have the barn, a common area out of the rain/cold where we could sit and have a cup of tea.

    Disliked:

It wasn't the campsite's fault, but the pub at the end of the drive was closed, so when we arrived in late afternoon (we were walking from another town), there wasn't much to eat. Like a lot of campsites we visited on the Dales Way, this one was geared a bit more toward those who arrived in cars (nice, ample parking) or were able to self-cater. Since we were walking and had to leave early, we needed to depart before the snack bar was open, so we arrived too late for an afternoon meal and left too early for a morning meal.

A local cab driver charged us a premium to go to the Station Inn 2 miles down the road. The walk to that pub, the only place for miles around to eat, was along a busy road and was not really walkable in evening/nighttime hours. Again, this was not the fault of the campsite owners, but it did affect our stay.

Given all this, we thought it was less of a "leave the car at home" place, though we were glad to be nearer to a train station than we'd been at other campsites on the Dales Way.

Would come again, but would check on the Hill Inn down the road first, and bring a car if possible.

Local attractions

For committed peak baggers, trails up to Ingleborough and Whernside run just by the farm, and the starting point for third peak, Pen-y-ghent, is 15 minutes' drive away. While some mark off their scorecards and leave, others stay and explore this area stuffed with wonders both natural and man-made.

The Settle-Carlisle Railway, and its transit over the mighty Ribblehead Viaduct, marks a meeting of human endeavour and landscape: don't miss a chance to take one of the world's great rides: 73 miles through remote and sometimes jaw-dropping scenery from Ribblehead, five minutes' drive away, or Settle (half an hour).

If you're up for something more active, it's 10 minutes into Ingleton for tours of the White Scar Caves and the trail to the waterfalls. Heading further westwards towards the Forest of Bowland, it's a 45-minute drive to paths up Bowland's highest point, White Hill for views of Dales, Lakes and even sometimes, the sea. The area is popular with cyclists, too, with numerous bike routes through Gisburn Forest starting from the Forest Hub café, also 45 minutes away.

If water's more your element, it's half an hour to Semer Water for coarse and brown trout fishing, canoeing and windsurfing and if you're a tad peckish after all that outdoor stuff you could head up to Hawes (20 minutes) and sample the cheesy delights of the Wensleydale Creamery.
