  • Dog-friendly farm site five miles from Harrogate
  • A 10-minute drive to Valley Gardens Harrogate and Thruscross Reservoir
  • Play area and seasonal events; animals including goats on site
Go on, treat yourself to a rural getaway in lovely North Yorkshire at this quiet, spacious site in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty five miles from Harrogate. With goats on the farm and great walks through lush greenery on site too, Windmill Retreats is exactly the type of spot where you’ll want to switch off completely. The countryside site is just a 10-minute drive from Harrogate, a North Yorkshire town that you’ll likely soon develop a soft spot for. It doesn’t matter if you’re headed there in search of some lovely Yorkshire scran on a walking food tour or for the gorgeous flowers and Art Deco Pavilion in the Grade II-listed parkland at Valley Gardens Harrogate, or for rock climbing and swimming. If shopping’s more your sort of thing, bagging yourself a deal is most likely at the Designer Outlet York, an hour’s drive away. Meanwhile, those of a more active disposition can set about taking a stroll around the nearby reservoirs, which include Fewston Reservoir, five minutes’ drive away, and Thruscross Reservoir, 10 minutes’ drive away, or get stuck into an activity with the Yorkshire Activity Centre (50 minutes’ drive). The site’s facilities are splendidly clean, and include the likes of showers and toilets along with a play area for kids to let off steam. The site plans seasonal events on occasion too.

Shepherd's hut (pet friendly)

Liked: Loved every minute of staying at windmill retreats 😍 Stayed in the highland hideaway. The hut has everything you need for a long weekend and the hot tub was ready to go when we arrived. The owners Jo & Mark go above and beyond in every aspect and are so lovely and kind. We arrived to a lovely sweet and a drink each. Fresh towels in the hut for us plus a fluffy robe and some slippers. There are a couple of pubs/restaurants close by and the food is amazing in them!! We absolutely loved feeding the cows and goats with Mark and his little boy on the day we left 🐄🐐 it was definitely a highlight! Will 100% be returning to this gorgeous glamping site 💖

Bell tent (pet friendly)

Liked: From the moment we booked the owners, Jo and Mark went above and beyond to make our stay amazing. The shepherds hut was perfect. All kitchen utensils, plates, pans, toaster, microwave, fridge, hob, even a coffee maker! Our favourite item had to be the whistling kettle! We loved the little touches of drinks, delicious cakes and welcome pack-the fresh bread made great toast! The bathroom has the most amazing power shower!! With large fluffy towels and dressing gowns. The bed is a big queen size, with cozy pillows and themed duvet cover. Nice seating areas, inside and out. We booked a hot tub for our stay, warm and bubbly, star gazing, owl watching and sipping Prosecco-perfect end to a perfect day. The site is on a working farm with goats and highland cows. The highlight of the weekend was a text from Mark asking if we would like to feed them! It was a great opportunity to meet the family-3 adorable children and other guests. You are made to feel like friends from the moment you book to when leaving site. We really can’t wait to go back!

Disliked: Having to come home!

Shepherd's hut (no pets)

Liked: From the moment we booked to the moment we left, Jo and Mark (the owners) were fabulous at making our stay brilliant. They are so helpful and kind and couldn't do enough to make us feel at home. The lodge and hot tub were set in a stunning location and were so lovely. The site has amazing views, is sooooo quite and relaxing and the sky at night when clear was just an amazing array of stars. The accommodation was great and has ample facilities for a great long weekend or more. Sitting on the balcony with the firepit/bbq or in the tub with a glass of something was just lovely with the sounds of the Yorkshire countryside the only thing to hear. We'll certainly be back.

Shepherd's hut (pet friendly)

Liked: Genuinely could not fault this place at all. The room was so gorgeous and clean. Modern appliances. The hot tub was lovely. The hosts were so accommodating and lovely. (They go above and beyond) Fresh bread, milk, Prosecco and cakes on arrival. Cannot stress how unbelievably kind and generous the hosts were. Gorgeous setting and perfect distance from local pubs, shops and short drive to Harrogate. The kitchen appliances and the bbq made it so easy you never need to leave the site. Quiet, small site so perfect for dogs and relaxing in the hot tub in the evening.

Disliked: Not a dislike at all but we didn’t know it was to be kept on so we switched the hot tub off but it needs a long time to heat up. Not the fault owners or a negative of the site but the storm had taken down the Wi-Fi.

Shepherd's hut (no pets)

Liked: We decided to book a last minute relaxing chilled weekend away and this couldn't have been more perfect. Jo and Mark are lovely people that will do anything for you to make sure you have everything you need. The cabin is fully equipped and on arrival it was such a nice touch to arrive to cakes, champagne and even the essentials, fresh milk, orange juice, tea, bread and Jam! we also had the hot tub which was so nice overlooking the country side. The location is perfect, this is a 15 minute drive into Harrogate which is a beautiful place. There is also two nice pubs 5 mins drive down the road called The Nelson Inn and The Curious Cow (our favourite). We even had a BBQ one night, Mark and his little boy Harry delivered a meat package and charcoal on Harry's little truck (so cute). This was from their local butchers which was lovely. We would highly recommend and we will be going back again with our golden retriever as it is a perfect set up to take dogs. Thank you Jo and Mark for such a lovely stay, see you soon!!

Disliked: Nothing!

Local attractions

Would you believe that Cistercian monks were some of the first to forge the ancient trail from the National Trust’s Brimham Rocks (15 minutes’ drive) to Fountains Abbey (25 minutes)? Follow their lead along the Monk Trail, with gorgeous views from Riva Hill. Both the beginning and end destination are gorgeous, with Brimham Rocks’ moorlands (with heather and other rare plants) being declared a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and Fountains Abbey being an impressive Georgian water garden with lakes, canals and temples. That’s a couple of historic places under your belt already – room for more? Ripley Castle (10 minutes), just a few miles from Harrogate, is a 14th-century country house. Strolling round elegant homes and gardens is all well and good, but if you want something that’ll raise your pulse a bit more, How Stean Gorge (35 minutes) is the spot. The 20-metre-deep gorge has caves and ravines, making it a great spot for gorge walking activities.
