  • Off-grid woodland glamping pods 10 minutes' drive from Malton
  • On the edge of the North York Moors; 20 minutes' drive from the coast
  • Well-equipped pods each with private bathroom, firepit and kitchen
Three acres of woodland to scamper around is an enticing enough prospect anywhere, but in the case of Lahtlewood Glamping this comes with the added bonus of a nifty North Yorkshire location in the Vale of Pickering, on the edge of the North York Moors and 20 minutes from the coast. The A64 is handily close by here, but it’s most certainly not all about getting out and about – this glamping site is pretty splendid in its own right. Peace and space are in good supply at this off-grid site, where pods have been set up in little woodland glades. There's no electricity, but each one has its own alfresco kitchen, barbecue, firepit and outdoor table and seating. The site’s fully fenced with no cars around the pods (you’ll wheel your kit over in wheelbarrows) and a ball game area, so kids and dogs can run about in safety. All has been designed to make life as easy and comfy as possible: each pod has its own ‘Scrub Shack’ with toilet and wood-fired hot shower, and there’s a shared barbecue hut seating up to 10 for folk who’d like to gather under cover. Oodles of little extras are covered, from the saucepans to the dishcloth to the lighter, plus charcoal and logs for the shower and barbecue; all you’ll need to pack is your clothes, towels, wash bag and some food and drink (ideally sourced from the market town of Malton, which is 10 minutes’ drive away and a popular foodie spot). If you fancy having someone else sort your dinner, there's a fab local pub 20 minutes' walk away that welcomes dogs and kids.

Pheasant Blue 1 bedroom camping pod (four person)

Liked: Liked Everything about this place, lovely pods, was great to have your own toilet and showering facilities for each pod and was great to have everything all ready there from cooking equipment to your bedding linen. Was even better that fact we could allow our young child to run free outside in pod area as there’s no cars within this area. Staff so friendly checking in with you and if require anything. Site is kept clean and well maintained. Was great to have no Wi-Fi and great to just be grounded to our surroundings.

Peewit Red 1 bedroom camping pod

Liked: This is honestly our absolute favourite place to stay. This was our second time here, and again, we did not want to leave. Our children, aged 19, 14, 10 and 5 all had an absolutely amazing time, and we spent our time exploring the beautiful grounds, and spending quality time as a family, with the luxury of the hot shower and outside kitchen facilities. The fact we had no technology made this experience even better. The hosts, Sarah and David, are just absolutely fabulous, they go above and beyond to make your stay perfect. They work so hard and are so friendly, always smiling. We will be booking as soon as we possibly can. This glampsite, is not your average glampsite, this is just so much better, with a touch of class. We love Lahtlewood <3

Disliked: Leaving and going home.

Woodpecker Grey cabin (ensuite, hot tub, no pets, two person)

Liked: Location: 20 mins from York/Scarborough. Great for days out. Hot Tub: a nice touch on the Woodpecker huts, but it takes around 4 hours to heat up, on your first day. Not 2 hours as advertised. The hot tub will stay warm the following day, so you don't need to add as much wood. It would be a really nice touch if the owners could heat the hot tubs before arrival, without charge. If you're paying £350 for 2 nights this would just be a special touch and save the guests extra work on arrival, when they are there to relax and unwind. Owners: A lovely warm welcome from Sarah the owner who walked us round and showed us the facilities. It's nice that the owners are there and you know where to find them if needed, whilst leaving you to enjoy your stay and privacy also.

Disliked: Noise from road: Unfortunately you can hear loud traffic from early morning-late in the evening from the main road (Scarborough Road) this was based on staying in the Woodpecker Pods, I reckon the Owl huts don't have this noise. For an 'off the grid' location this is slightly disappointing, but nothing the owners can do to improve. No power in huts or electricity points around the site: Although the site offers to be a luxury glamping facility, you don't have power in the huts or access to charging points around the place. So if you need to do any remote work you won't be able to charge up, especially laptops as the only charging point (in the toilet cubicle) is a USB charging hub. Price: We don't think the camping site meets it's price point, without electricity or running hot water we think it could be around £100 less. We've been to other luxury glamping sites and budget sites that have power sockets, hot running water and they were around £100 less. With everything included. Added extras: The BBQ coal and wood is not included, and any extra wood for your hot tub or shower is at an extra charge. This is something you don't really expect when paying in excess of £350. Again this could be clearer on the pitch-up website. (NO POWER / CHARGE FOR COAL / CHARGE FOR EXTRA WOOD) This would be an easy way for guests to see, as not everyone has the time to read through Pitch Up / The owners' website and watch several videos and read emails before checking in.

From the manager: I'm so sorry Eve that Lahtle Wood didn't meet your expectations. We are not trying to be a luxury glampsite in the ways of doing/ having everything 5 star. The point about our off-grid glampsite is to be DIY, in getting involved with heating the hot tub, grilling on the BBQ, heating the shower water by filling the wood burner stove, in that time waiting, is relaxation in it's self to get away from work, phones and laptops to allow yourself to detox and recharge your own body battery being more mindful! Sarah

Local attractions

Where to start? Perhaps by wandering straight out onto the Wolds Way, which passes just by the site, or taking boots and bikes up to the trails of Dalby Forest (25 minutes’ drive)? Or perhaps to Pickering (20 minutes) to peruse the castle before taking a scenic ride on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway? On warm days (or cool ones, depending on how hardy you are…) you may like to turn attentions to the coast for days on the beach at Filey or Scarborough (both 20 minutes away) or a wander around Whitby (45 minutes). There are some cracking coastal walks around Ravenscar and Robin Hood’s Bay (45 minutes) or at Flamborough Head (40 minutes) for added seabird-spotting. If you’ve got the kids with you – or fancy an action-packed couple’s day out – bounce across the inflatables at North Yorkshire Water Park (20 minutes) or swoosh down the slides at Alpamare UK (25 minutes). Back on dry land, Flamingo Land is another fine source of fun, while there are more sedate attractions at Castle Howard (both 25 minutes).
