General

  • Off-grid woodland glamping pods 10 minutes' drive from Malton
  • On the edge of the North York Moors; 20 minutes' drive from the coast
  • Well-equipped pods each with private bathroom, firepit and kitchen

Three acres of woodland to scamper around is an enticing enough prospect anywhere, but in the case of Lahtlewood Glamping this comes with the added bonus of a nifty North Yorkshire location in the Vale of Pickering, on the edge of the North York Moors and 20 minutes from the coast.

The A64 is handily close by here, but it’s most certainly not all about getting out and about – this glamping site is pretty splendid in its own right. Peace and space are in good supply at this off-grid site, where pods have been set up in little woodland glades. There's no electricity, but each one has its own alfresco kitchen, barbecue, firepit and outdoor table and seating. The site’s fully fenced with no cars around the pods (you’ll wheel your kit over in wheelbarrows) and a ball game area, so kids and dogs can run about in safety.

All has been designed to make life as easy and comfy as possible: each pod has its own ‘Scrub Shack’ with toilet and wood-fired hot shower, and there’s a shared barbecue hut seating up to 10 for folk who’d like to gather under cover. Oodles of little extras are covered, from the saucepans to the dishcloth to the lighter, plus charcoal and logs for the shower and barbecue; all you’ll need to pack is your clothes, towels, wash bag and some food and drink (ideally sourced from the market town of Malton, which is 10 minutes’ drive away and a popular foodie spot).

If you fancy having someone else sort your dinner, there's a fab local pub 20 minutes' walk away that welcomes dogs and kids.

We had a lovely couple of days at Lahtlewood, myself, my wife, kids aged 6 and 11 and a dog. The cabin was lovely, cosy, the bedding was warm and clean though we did find a couple of sneaky woodlice (this is posh camping afterall).
The kitchen area was excellent, stove worked properly, plenty of utensils, dishes etc.
They provided a large coolbox with ice too and a dustbin and recycling bin.
The shower was lovely once we figured out how to keep it warm and keep the log burner going.
There was a firepit/bbq which we put to use too.
A play area near the cabin had swingball, a netball hoop, seesaw etc which the kids enjoyed.
The customer service was good, the shop was helpful and the couple running the show were happy to get us supplies as ordered.
The site is beautiful and interesting and an added bonus you can hear owls on a night and during the day there are lots of goldcrests fluttering in the trees.

    Disliked:

Not really a complaint as this is camping and there are other guests to be considered. As a dog friendly place it would be nice to have a fenced off area to let the dog off the lead to play. When at the cabin the dog was on lead the whole time which would be a barrier to us returning with the dog.
A second niggle would be that one of the tap leavers in the kitchen was loose and fell off quite a few times.
Also, no wifi or electric - but we knew this and that was the intention - kids complained, we didn't lol.

The set up was fantastic - loved the rustic feel - nice and private - fantastic welcome.

    Disliked:

Unfortunately on the first evening we hardly got any sleep as the pod was far too cold. We used the hot water bottles provided - we had Pj’s on and onesies and it was just far too cold. Decided on the second day not to spend a second evening with no sleep. Owner has offered an additional evening away as a gesture of goodwill when the weather is warmer. Really think they are missing a trick for all year round business due to the absence of some small heating - which could easily be run off a diesel heater or even connected to the boiler that runs the shower.

If we had been warmer this place would’ve been perfect.

From the manager...

Lahtle Wood is all about new adventures, getting away from home mod cons, having to make a fire to cook & provide warmth, heat your own wood burning stove for a lovely hot shower and enjoy the great outdoors, peace and fresh air. There was an extra single duvet and hot water bottle in your Pheasant Pod as you were a party of 3 which were untouched that would have provided extra warmth and the shower boiler for hot water had not been used either which is the highlight for most of our glampers and only takes 20 minutes to heat. The only thing we can't provide is the weather! I am sorry you felt cold, we didn't have reports of being cold from other glampers that same w/e but they did use all the facilities we provide at the pods including the indoor central cook hut which is very snug when the fire pit is lit. Best wishes Sarah

Absolutely amazing in every way.., everything has been so well thought out. This beautiful place gives you the outdoor experience but with a few luxuries added in … the pods are simple and beautiful and impeccably clean … Sarah was the nicest person we dealt with, always on hand if we needed her, nothing was an issue. We were the only people on the site at the time (just after school holidays and midweek), the dogs had a wonderful time chilling and investigating the woods. We visited lots of places, Filey, Thorton Le Dale, highly recommend Cedar barn cafe and farm shop and the bird/animal park. The weather was lovely, we spent time in the hot tub and around the open fire in the peaceful surroundings. Already booked for next year with the family. Thank you Julie and Maria.

Local attractions

Where to start? Perhaps by wandering straight out onto the Wolds Way, which passes just by the site, or taking boots and bikes up to the trails of Dalby Forest (25 minutes’ drive)? Or perhaps to Pickering (20 minutes) to peruse the castle before taking a scenic ride on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway?

On warm days (or cool ones, depending on how hardy you are…) you may like to turn attentions to the coast for days on the beach at Filey or Scarborough (both 20 minutes away) or a wander around Whitby (45 minutes). There are some cracking coastal walks around Ravenscar and Robin Hood’s Bay (45 minutes) or at Flamborough Head (40 minutes) for added seabird-spotting.

If you’ve got the kids with you – or fancy an action-packed couple’s day out – bounce across the inflatables at North Yorkshire Water Park (20 minutes) or swoosh down the slides at Alpamare UK (25 minutes). Back on dry land, Flamingo Land is another fine source of fun, while there are more sedate attractions at Castle Howard (both 25 minutes).

Must see

  • Dalby Forest Visitor Centre (7.9 miles)
  • North Yorkshire Moors Railway (9.3 miles)
