  • Well-maintained and peaceful adults-only touring park
  • A five-minute drive from Easingwold and half an hour from York
  • Overlooks trout fishing lakes and has views of the Howardian Hills
A quiet countryside hideout for fly fishing to a backdrop of dreamy views – if the sound of such a setup strikes a chord, it’s high time you tow your caravan to a pitch overlooking the top-notch trout lakes at Thornton Lodge Country Retreats. Amble around this adults-only park to find your favourite view, perhaps along the national 28-mile Foss Walk running through the farm, which goes from Foss Crooks Woods near Oulston Reservoir through the Vale of York and into the centre of York. A top tip is that most visitors prefer looking westward to the Howardian Hills and the Pennines at this scenic North Yorkshire spot. Other areas of the site worth a look include the barbecue and picnic areas – prime places for filling up on food. But if a meal cooked by someone else is what you’re after, make haste for Easingwold via a footpath leading from the grounds and across a field (40 minutes’ walk). Cyclists can also set forth on national route No.65 using a bike rented from the park. Whether you walk, drive or ride, this whole area is steeped in history, with local places of interest ranging from abbeys and halls to clay pigeon shooting grounds. It’s a cinch to get out in the car too as the A19 road, leading to York (half an hour) and further up to Scotland, is three miles away. Alternatively, stay awhile on site and immerse yourself in the peace and quiet, safe in the knowledge that essential amenities like electric hook-ups and chemical disposal points are close to hand.

Local attractions

This part of Yorkshire is rich in history and culture. Within 10 minutes’ drive is Coxwold with its tiptop 12th-century church and Shandy Hall, a museum in the old home of writer Laurence Sterne. Veer slightly outside the village for Newburgh Priory Estate, a Grade 1-listed Tudor building, or branch out a little further (15 minutes' drive) to Byland Abbey and wander around the ruins. If religious structures of note strike a chord, don’t miss Rievaulx Abbey – set in a remote valley in the North York Moors National Park, it’s one of the most impressive landmarks of its kind in England. Castle Howard (half an hour) is yet another of the area’s historical highlights. This stately home is topped with a grand domed roof and surrounded by gardens lined in ornate fountains. Navigate towards another manor house too, the National Trust’s Beningbrough Hall, a huge Georgian mansion with a baroque interior, cantilevered stairs and wood carvings.
