  • Well-maintained and peaceful family site in Exelby, North Yorkshire
  • Half an hour’s drive to the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors
  • Grass pitches with a recreation field, play area and games available
When you’re chasing down a family camping adventure with all sorts for the kids to do, Osprey Meadow Campsite in the peaceful North Yorkshire village of Exelby should fit the bill rather well. Equidistant between the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the North York Moors National Park (it’s half an hour’s drive to both), it’s also easy to get to the museums of York (50 minutes’ drive), and lots of family attractions like Lightwater Valley Family Adventure Park are within 20 minutes’ drive. Handy facilities for the few pitches set in a grass meadow include shower blocks, secure lockers with power for charging mobile devices and charging points for electric cars. This is a site that caters for kids very well, with swings and climbing frames in a play area, as well as a three-acre fenced field where they can safely have a run around, play games (archery and quoits are available) and kick a ball about. Mini-explorers can follow the interactive fairy trail, and games and books are on hand in the lending library for those days when the weather’s not on top form. You’re welcome to bring any four-legged friends too, as Osprey Meadow also has a dedicated dog-walking area and two lovable resident canines to help your pets feel at home.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Just arrived back after our trip to Osprey Meadow. Loved the board that had our pitch number and name on, drove on and found our pitch by ourselves then Phil came along a short while later to check we were all okay. Loved the childrens park and the communal area with the tables and chairs, fussball table, darts board, colouring, microwave, kettle and fridge in, didn't use it much but definitely a great shelter if the weather was bad. The toilets and showers were clean (lovely lady cleaning then too) no heating in there but the water in the shower was red hot if wanted, no complaints. One washing up sink in the same barn as the toilets and showers, had washing up liquid (thank god because we forgot ours) tea towels for use there too, as well as hand towels which were replaced every morning. Loads of mirrors too which is a rarity I think on campsites. The site was only small and very quiet during our stay, with tents/campers round the edge of the field so could always see the kids playing. Great location, not too far from local attractions.

Disliked: Two free roam dogs who were well behaved and lovely don't get me wrong but just wasn't over keen on them sat waiting on you whilst you cooked and ate, we didn't feed them but it was obvious that other campers did. Early morning traffic coming from the neighbouring village to the main road on the week day morning but that's absolutely no reflection on the site.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The facilities were fab and very clean!! There was even a kettle and an inside communal cooking area Plenty of room for the children to roam. We will be back !

Disliked: Little boggy, but no one can help the weather. The lady was out at 8am putting wood chipping on the extra boggy bits.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Lovely site with excellent facilities and a brilliant play area for wee kids. The chickens & ducks were a particular highlight for our almost 2yr old daughter who was mesmerised for longer than we’ve ever known her entertained on a single thing before! :-D Really good showers and a welcome wee games/family area where the showers etc. are made some inclement weather whizz by too.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: A small little site, with everything a stone throw away from your pitch. Site management leave you alone, everything you need is in nearby village also. Not showers.

Disliked: It could do with a good tidy up. Site is very functioning but you can tell its left for long periods of time without site management intervention. My opinion it needs day to day maintenance and cleaning.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The site was lovely. All you needed for a chill time away. Little one loved watching the ducks while he had his breakfast every morning. The play park was the right amount of adventure and it was lovely that it was so close to the main campsite so you could see the children. Lots to keep them occupied. A store to borrow from too which I thought was fab - high chairs, potties, books, games. The showered were rustic and basic, but we’re done very nicely. Nice hot water with a good pressure. I LOVED the sink set up. The owner was lovely and would pop round most mornings to check all was ok while he was sorting the animals. Very accommodating when we asked if we could switch plots. Would definitely visit again.

Disliked: My only gripe was that the games in the toilet block were all ransacked and missing. I appreciate how much effort it must take to sort them all out when people done put things away properly, but it was sad that most were missing pieces or not in the right box.
