General

  • Peaceful site in rambling country half a mile from Hornsea
  • A mile from the East Yorkshire coast
  • Easy access to the Trans Pennine Trail

Are you after a quiet, secluded and no-frills East Yorkshire spot – with easy access to hikes and the Yorkshire coast as well as some shops and pubs? White Cottage Caravan and Camping should see you sorted if so, as it's in peaceful and remote countryside just half a mile from the town of Hornsea and about a mile from the East Yorkshire coast.

There's easy access from here to the Trans Pennine Trail, the long-distance path running for 215 miles from coast to coast across the north of England from Southport to Hornsea; plenty more scenic countryside walks, footpaths and trails start from around these parts too if you'd rather strike out on your own.

The site has basic shower and toilet facilities, but you should find all you need re local amenities a short walk away in Hornsea. A major supermarket, shops, newsagents, bank and post office are within a mile.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

A charge of £0.20 applies for the use of shower.

Quiet and close to trans penine trail, just go left out of the little gate at the back of the site, up to bridge and then down onto trail, you can walk for miles, our dog loved it.

nice flat grassed field. we used the site as a base so we could explore the area, we had a great day in Beverley which was both historical and had great restaurants and lots of small independent shops along with good chains.

    Disliked:

only one shower with access through owners garden, small cubicle with warm water not very powerful, no wash basin, concrete floor with bath mats provided to step out on to, maybe a duck board would be better. was glad we were the only people on site as would have had to wait a long time if it was busy. access to the site off the main road through a gate that needs to be opened and closed each time - security- could do with some gravel down as was quite muddy. noisy main road.

From the manager...

A very frustrating review! I asked this camper whilst on site if everything is ok and they seemed very happy with the site, so this review has come as a surprise.

The shower - we only have one shower because we are a small site and it is sufficient for the site even when we are fully booked as not everyone uses the shower, so you do not have to queue. We not not provide a duck board because when it gets wet it becomes a slip hazard and is not hygeinic, instead the bath mats are used once and washed and do not become a hazard once wet.

Muddy field - I'm still looking for mud on the field, not found any yet!

The gate - we cannot understand anyone what would have a problem with shutting a gate for safety of children and dogs on the site. We have it shut to benefit campers and there safety.

Noisy main road - yes we are next a road and it does get busy at peak times, but it is not 24/7.

I was made to feel very welcome from the moment I arrived and offered a choice of pitches. The owners gave me lots of helpful information about dog walking in the area and routes as well as checking I got back safely. The toilet/shower etc were kept clean and the site was much larger than I expected and a 5 minutes walk from the trans pennine trail.

Shower located in a building in owners garden, seemed a little strange!

Lovely little camp site with good toilets and shower facilities. Very close to Hornsea.

    Disliked:

Even tough the campsite is close to Hornsea it was not possible to walk there especially if you have children as there is no pavement on the 60 mile an hour road outside of the campsite but there is free parking down at a the beach.

From the manager...

You can walk down the TransPennine trial to Hornsea from the campsite which is not on the road. There is only a short walk on the road before you reach the path which leads you into Hornsea.

Local attractions

Get onto one of the local footpaths or trails from White Cottage Caravan and Camping, or tackle as much as you dare of the Trans Pennine Trail, which finishes up in Hornsea after its epic run east from Merseyside's Southport. Its mainly traffic-free route is suitable for horse riding and bikes too (and in most cases buggies and wheelchairs) and it was voted the best National Cycle Network in the country in 2015.

Also within easy reach is Hornsea Mere, the biggest freshwater lake in Yorkshire and where peeps flock to for birdwatching, rowing, sailing, boat trips and fishing. Set on the remains of a vast wetland, it's a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Protection Area for birds, with many species visiting throughout the year. A café and 18-hole putting green are on the mere's shore.

White Cottage is 13 miles from Beverley, with rail access to York and Hull for shopping and days out. You could also wander around the many stately homes of the region, such as Burton Constable Hall, Burton Agnes and Rise Hall.

Must see

  • Burton Agnes Hall (11.9 miles)
  • Ferens Art Gallery (12.9 miles)
  • The Deep (13.0 miles)

National Trust

  • Maister House (12.8 miles)
