General

  • Peaceful site in rambling country half a mile from Hornsea
  • A mile from the East Yorkshire coast
  • Easy access to the Trans Pennine Trail

Are you after a quiet, secluded and no-frills East Yorkshire spot – with easy access to hikes and the Yorkshire coast as well as some shops and pubs? White Cottage Caravan and Camping should see you sorted if so, as it's in peaceful and remote countryside just half a mile from the town of Hornsea and about a mile from the East Yorkshire coast.

There's easy access from here to the Trans Pennine Trail, the long-distance path running for 215 miles from coast to coast across the north of England from Southport to Hornsea; plenty more scenic countryside walks, footpaths and trails start from around these parts too if you'd rather strike out on your own.

The site has basic shower and toilet facilities, but you should find all you need re local amenities a short walk away in Hornsea. A major supermarket, shops, newsagents, bank and post office are within a mile.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

A charge of 20p applies for the use of shower.

Lovely clean, peaceful site. Fenced all the way around, which was great as we had our 2 year old. Kids enjoyed all the space to play, nice walk into the farmers field onto hornsea track. Tesco just a 5 minute drive.

    Disliked:

Nothing at all. Will definitely be visiting again.

It wasn't busy and you could pitch your stuff anywhere. The owners were really friendly and would help in anyway.

    Disliked:

Just one shower which I can imaging would potentially cause queuing if really busy period.

The site was ideal for us, it was nice, flat, and fenced in so we were about play with our 2 dogs. spacing between pitches was very generous, the facilities were more than adequate for us, is close to the town and the lady who met us there was very helpful.

The site is a flat grassy field with plenty of room, and is only a mile or so from Hornsea.

It's run by a nice friendly couple.

    Disliked:

only two toilets - this didn't cause any problems for us, even though we visited over a sunny bank holiday weekend, but I can imagine queues (and warm seats!) if the site ever gets particularly busy.

only one shower, with a bare concrete floor. Although Pitch Up says there's a 20p charge for the shower, it's actually 20p per minute.

From the manager...

We have been fully booked over many bank holidays and I am still waiting to see a queue coming out of the toilets. Just to confirm we have three toilets on site.

We do have one shower on site due to the site only been small, it is not a big enough site to have more than one shower. The floor is concrete due to health and safety, it was recommended by the caravan and camping club that concrete is the safest surface to have in a shower, rather than anti slip flooring which is not always the safest option.

Local attractions

Get onto one of the local footpaths or trails from White Cottage Caravan and Camping, or tackle as much as you dare of the Trans Pennine Trail, which finishes up in Hornsea after its epic run east from Merseyside's Southport. Its mainly traffic-free route is suitable for horse riding and bikes too (and in most cases buggies and wheelchairs) and it was voted the best National Cycle Network in the country in 2015.

Also within easy reach is Hornsea Mere, the biggest freshwater lake in Yorkshire and where peeps flock to for birdwatching, rowing, sailing, boat trips and fishing. Set on the remains of a vast wetland, it's a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Protection Area for birds, with many species visiting throughout the year. A café and 18-hole putting green are on the mere's shore.

White Cottage is 13 miles from Beverley, with rail access to York and Hull for shopping and days out. You could also wander around the many stately homes of the region, such as Burton Constable Hall, Burton Agnes and Rise Hall.

Must see

  • Burton Agnes Hall (11.9 miles)
  • Ferens Art Gallery (12.9 miles)
  • The Deep (13.0 miles)
