General

  • Peaceful site in rambling country half a mile from Hornsea
  • A mile from the East Yorkshire coast
  • Easy access to the Trans Pennine Trail

Are you after a quiet, secluded and no-frills East Yorkshire spot – with easy access to hikes and the Yorkshire coast as well as some shops and pubs? White Cottage Caravan and Camping should see you sorted if so, as it's in peaceful and remote countryside just half a mile from the town of Hornsea and about a mile from the East Yorkshire coast.

There's easy access from here to the Trans Pennine Trail, the long-distance path running for 215 miles from coast to coast across the north of England from Southport to Hornsea; plenty more scenic countryside walks, footpaths and trails start from around these parts too if you'd rather strike out on your own.

The site has basic shower and toilet facilities, but you should find all you need re local amenities a short walk away in Hornsea. A major supermarket, shops, newsagents, bank and post office are within a mile.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

A charge of £0.20 applies for the use of shower.

Plenty of open space, quite site and clean

    Disliked:

No hot water or washing up station . Toilets cold as old stables. No info re showers etc .

From the manager...

PLEASE READ DESCRIPTION BEFORE BOOKING WE CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH.

It clearly states on pitch up we are a basic site - with basic facilities. We do not have washing up facilities - as stated on pitch up nor do we have hot water as stated on pitch up. Boil your kettle for hot water or boil water in a pan on camping gas hob. - YOU ARE CAMPING REMEMBER!

We do not have central heated toilets unless your in a hotel I find it unlikely that any basic camp site will have central heated toilets maybe your big centre parks might but not a small site.

All campers on arrival are told about site including been told any problems or any questions come up to the house and we are happy to help. Its not difficult to come ask if can't find something on the site use your common sense.

Lovely clean, tidy site beautiful location and easy access to the trans Pennine trail. Ideal walking and cycling location. Toilets are kept clean with hand wash and clean towels replaced daily. Shower is adequate again with clean towels if you forget yours. We found the owner friendly and helpful offering advice regarding walking to town and she kindly allowed us to put up a fence around our tent for our dogs and also leave our camper on site for a few hours while we visited the beautiful beach again beore leaving.

    Disliked:

The 20p shower option is very short so would definitely recommend the £1 option unless you want a very quick shower. (The owner did warn me of this)

Got to the site and dropped my car off as previously arranged and walked down the Rail Trail, on return pitched tent, showered and went for food, in the morning cleared up and left. All in all just what the doctor ordered, clean toilets, clean showers, level field plenty of space and not too far from numerous chippies. Ten out of ten, will go again and do a bit more of the Rail Trail.

Location, close to Hornsea, Bridlington and small villages with access to dog-friendly beaches. Large open field - decent sized flat pitches.

    Disliked:

Occasional tripping of electricity breakers. Limited toilet facilities for number of pitches available though didn`t bother us with a tourer.

From the manager...

The toilets are sufficient for the site I am yet to see a queue. Yes, the electric will trip if you have to much plugged in, it is set up like that for health and safety.

Had a fantastic time. Site was looking lovely. Toilets lovely and clean. Very friendly site. Lots of space especially for children to play. Really near to Trans Pennine Trail. Dog friendly as we took our novice Alaskan Malamute to camping and our Husky who is an experienced camper.
We had bought a new Airgo Stratus tent and awning which was fun to put up and take down.
Will visit this site again for sure as we have more exploring to do.
We didn’t use the showers but I am sure they were just as good as everything else on the site. The traffic did not bother us at all.

It was the only place available

    Disliked:

Only 2 toilets for whole site. No hot water- one tiny tap. Often queues for these toilets which weren’t that clean and ran out of soap. No washing up facilities - just a single tap on the fence for whole field. There was a shower but it was at the owners house so you had to walk through their garden to get there. It was occupied every time I tried to use it and it apparently charges £1 which is unreasonable as the camping was not cheap.
Finally they asked us to move our tents after we’d been there a few hours as we’d occupied too much space. They said the campsite was filling up and we needed to fit within a smaller space. We moved accordingly, however the cAmpsite remained 80% empty so we are not sure what the point of this was.
Even with the campsite 80% empty the facilities weren’t good enough.

From the manager...

They are yes 2 toilets, which are sufficient for the size of the site we only have 15 pitches. I can see the toilets from the house and yet to see a queue. Our toilets are checked daily and clean. The soap and toilet rolls are replenished throughout the daily.

The shower is near the house and yes you have to come through our court yard to get to it but we don't mind at all people coming in, we would not have the shower there if we didn't like people coming in. It is the only place it can go on the site because of the drainage and water.

There are three taps on the site not one, one on the field, one near the toilets and one near the waste.

We do not advertise on pitch-up that we have hot water or washing facilities, please read description before bookings.

This camper paid for one pitch I cannot let them have two pitches for the price of one. The campsite is 80% empty because these are not allocated pitches there is space is for children to play. We are not a back to back full of tents campsite. We are only a small site.

We are a basic site read before booking!

Nice countryside close Hornsea which was lovely, flat pitch and did what it said in tin.

    Disliked:

Toilet facilities could do with separating of male and female, shower and washing facilities were limited. Would have liked a dishwashing area with hot water

From the manager...

It is no longer a requirement to have separate male and female toilets, you can go into any Costa, Marks and Spencer and find unisex toilets. The caravan club do not recommend separate toilet there view was do you have separate toilets at home.

Local attractions

Get onto one of the local footpaths or trails from White Cottage Caravan and Camping, or tackle as much as you dare of the Trans Pennine Trail, which finishes up in Hornsea after its epic run east from Merseyside's Southport. Its mainly traffic-free route is suitable for horse riding and bikes too (and in most cases buggies and wheelchairs) and it was voted the best National Cycle Network in the country in 2015.

Also within easy reach is Hornsea Mere, the biggest freshwater lake in Yorkshire and where peeps flock to for birdwatching, rowing, sailing, boat trips and fishing. Set on the remains of a vast wetland, it's a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Protection Area for birds, with many species visiting throughout the year. A café and 18-hole putting green are on the mere's shore.

White Cottage is 13 miles from Beverley, with rail access to York and Hull for shopping and days out. You could also wander around the many stately homes of the region, such as Burton Constable Hall, Burton Agnes and Rise Hall.

Must see

  • Burton Agnes Hall (11.9 miles)
  • Ferens Art Gallery (12.9 miles)
