Camping on The Wolds: Open grassy pitches

General

  • Spacious dog-friendly Yorkshire Wolds site in Driffield
  • A 25-minute drive from the coast; less than an hour from York
  • Close to walking trails and railway station; bus stop just outside

Can’t quite decide between the coast and the countryside? Why not have both, at the East Yorkshire site Camping on The Wolds. Handily placed on the outskirts of Driffield in the low-lying valleys and chalk hills of the Yorkshire Wolds, this dog-friendly site is also 25 minutes’ drive from the coast, with the sandy shores of Skipsea, Hornsea and Bridlington all within 30 minutes’ drive.

From spacious grassy pitches, you can take in the views that inspired arty types like David Hockney, head out onto Yorkshire Wolds Way or the Minster Way or go for a townie wander in Beverley and York and gaze at their massive minsters.

Leave the car behind if you wish, as there’s a bus stop just outside the site and a train station 10 minutes’ walk away in town. Tuck into a meal here or consider checking out other nearby country pubs. Maybe make off for a Michelin-starred meal at the Pipe and Glass in Beverley, if you want something a little fancier.

If you’d rather stay put on your pitch, that’s fine too. Grab supplies from one of the independent shops or supermarkets in town and get the barbecue going for alfresco dinners.

Either way, the site has your basics covered: there are purpose-built toilet and shower blocks along with a washing-up area behind the main shower block.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Reception is unmanned after 6:30 p.m.. Please inform the site while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time, so that the team can provide information about your unit/pitch.

Protective masks must be worn at all times in common areas.

Owing to government regulations, groups of 7 or more people are not permitted.

Bookings must not consist of more than 2 different households.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Minimum spacing of 6 metres between pitches.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

The staff were brilliant. Very friendly and helpful with any information needed. Good bus service just outside with Beverley and/or Bridlington very accessible. Obviously for campers with a car there are endless places to see. Very quiet at night.

    Disliked:

The toilets were fine, but there were no private washrooms with a mirror where a man could shave, or a lady could pamper herself. No hair drying facilities or electric shaver points.

From the manager...

Thank you for your comments, we do have mirrors in the showers cubicles, but we did forget to re instate the toilet block mirrors, please accept our apologies.

A warm welcome on arrival, smallish campsite. Toilets and shower block were clean and tidy.

    Disliked:

    1. There is very weak mobile signal on site and WIFI is a must sadly it not yet working, but they could switch off the router until it is online that way people might stop asking for the password.

    2. Due to limited availability of the owners a small information flyer on arrival with a map of the site and nearby facilities would be very useful. Wood, passwords & car parking

From the manager...

Thankyou, and sorry the wifi was an issue but we dont advertise any on the site. We do also hand out a 'welcome' pack to all arrivals with local information. Not sure on your password/car park comments, our site is huge, but feel free to call if we can help improve your next stay.

Lovely site managers, very welcoming and laid back. Nice level pitch on very pleasant and convenient site. Toilets clean.

We were able to use the train to the coast which was excellent.

    Disliked:

Unfortunately the showers were all broken the whole time we were there and it required a car ride across the showground to use a disabled wet room which would have been fine if it was for one day only. Also ladies toilets have no mirrors at all which makes washing and inserting contact lenses very difficult.

From the manager...

Thank you for for your kind words and apologies about our showers being out of action, sometimes the plumbing demons catch up with us all. We did publicise the issue on a number of platforms and as you will be aware, we also contacted all that had booked, letting them know and giving them an option of a refund. As you say the wet room is available too. Now as far as mirrors go, you've got us there - they're in the showers and we forgot, sorry! That's resolved now though thanks for the heads up, we've put a mirror in the loos.

Local attractions

Buckets and spades at the ready… Bridlington (25 minutes' drive), and Scarborough (35 minutes) have all the action of a seaside promenade combined with soft surf. For a more secluded spot on the sand, head to the more remote Skipsea beach (25 minutes).

Don’t forget to pack your binoculars as you can spot auks, gannets and other seabirds at Flamborough Head (35 minutes) or RSPB Bempton Cliffs Seabird Centre (35 minutes). For another leisurely activity, there’s a golf course (five minutes) with a discount for guests.

Forests and dales await at North York Moors National Park (45 minutes). And when you want a break from the outdoors, the historic Burton Agnes Hall (15 minutes) reignites Elizabethan living. It’s a warm companion to the Georgian country house at Sledmere House (15 minutes), where you can let yourself get lost among maze-like landscaped gardens.

In need of some shopping or sightseeing therapy? York (50 minutes) and Beverley (20 minutes) both have mighty minsters and markets to mosey around.
