General

  • On the banks of the Tees with access to the Teesdale Way
  • Free fishing
  • Modern amenities block with underfloor heating and free showers

What a lovely little place… Co Durham's Leekworth Caravan Park is a 14-acre secluded farm site with spectacular countryside views, surrounded by the north Pennines and on the outskirts of the historic market village of Middleton-in-Teesdale.

It's a riverside park, set on the banks of the River Tees with free fishing for guests: how fab. If you're not up for fishing, this is walking land too, with miles of walking paths accessible nearby and the famed Teesdale Way cutting through the farm to join the Pennine Way.

The site's modern shower and toilet block has free showers and underfloor heating throughout; there's also a shower and toilet accessible to disabled guests, along with a covered washing-up area and chemical disposal.

Leekworth has a food shop; a well-stocked grocery shop as well as country shops and cafés are in Middleton village ten minutes' walk away and a big supermarket is in Barnard Castle within ten miles.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Single-sex bookings of 3 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Group bookings of 8 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

    Quiet,relaxing,friendly site with stunning views and lovely walks. Village 10 min walk with a well stocked Coop, cafes, pubs, fish n chips! Everyone very friendly.
    Good sized tent pitches. Plenty showers (x1 50p) and toilets- always clean. Small shop on site.
    There is no park or club house but that certainly didnt bother us or our 8yr old grandson who quickly made friends and played by the river (supervised) and at the footy field.

    Nothing to dislike if you're after some peace and quiet!

    The site location was lovely, the lake to. Clean toilets. And shop handy. Was about 45 mins walk to village. The road into the site was tight but very smooth as just re done. Would go again if cheaper.

    Disliked:

    Think could been cheaper as no play area but kids enjoyed the lake and football and running about. Peaceful. Only down side.... not sell milk as shop. And for tv had to pay 15pouunds for the extension wire from the box to tv. They sell in shop you. And no fish to catch.

    Almost everything.
    Robin Brough, the owner, is a hard working and caring site manager;
    The toilet and shower block are scrupulously clean with a good supply of hot water;
    The hard standing pitches are neat, level and the grass pitches are level and well manicured, all with excellent electrical hook-up posts and drinking water supply;
    The cassette toilet disposal facility is clean and easy to use;
    The surrounding views are really interesting and picturesque;
    This is the centre for so many walks of all levels of difficulty and the countryside is absolutely stunning;
    Fly fishers can use the river free of charge as long as they are licensed;

    The approach to the campsite is by way of a narrow lane about 2/3rds of a mile in length. Whilst we were there, (13th to 19th May), the Local Council set about resurfacing the lane and they have made a superb job of it. Robin insists that caravanners must leave before 12 noon and not arrive before 1:30pm to avoid meeting each other travelling in opposite directions. This system works well and the site is so much easier to enter and leave now that the lane has been resurfaced.

    Middleton-in-Teesdale is a very nice little town with an excellent Hotel/restaurant, the Teesdale Hotel, and a couple of other good restaurants. It also has some good shops for supplies. It is close to Barnard Castle which is a lovely town and the centre for some excellent walks. The Golf Club looks superb and we will try this out during our next visit.

    Disliked:

    I would have placed the "approach lane" in this section but now it has been resurfaced, it is not relevant.

    It is very difficult to think of anything to list, here. The only thing I would list is that WiFi is available by paying online to a third party for access. However, the rates for a site are so reasonable, this is rather an unfair criticism.

From the manager...

Thank you so much for taking the time to review our site with such wonderful remarks. We do try and take care of our site and facilities to the very best of our ability and we are pleased this has been noticed. We too absolutely love the area we are in with so many beautiful walks and our free fishing on the River Tees. Also we thank you for noting the lane being resurfaced, however this was not done by the council, it was paid for privately by myself, Robin, for the Caravan Site. We are very aware of the access lane to the caravan site and the fact it is a one vehicle lane, which is as you say why we try and have arrival and departure times separately to minimise any vehicles meeting in the lane. We are also pleased to see that the only ‘dislike’ is paying to a 3rd party for Wi-Fi, sadly this was our option to get Wi-Fi at the site and we thought it would be better to provide this optional service than not at all. We really look forward to seeing you again in the future.

Kind Regards

    The warm welcome from Robin was lovely, such a genuine down to earth guy. He explained everything and offered us any pitch we liked as it was very quiet. The shower block area is spotless and warm. Such a quiet site which was what we wanted and a nice drive in to Barnard Castle which we enjoyed. It was a decent one night stop on the way to Ambleside. Loved the river walk with the dogs too.

There's also a walk up the riverside footpath from the Bowless picnic area to Gibson's cave, past four small falls up to Summerhill Force.

If you want to dive into some Co Durham history, the town of Barnard Castle ten miles away has the acclaimed and handsome Bowes Museum with its collections of art, ceramics, textiles and more, and Raby Castle just outside the village of Staindrop has another art collection as well as eighteenth century gardens surrounding its big park.
