Tempted by the sound of a peaceful, luxurious glamping site in a hilltop location with lush Suffolk sunrises and sunsets? That’s all handled at Apple Mount Retreat, but that’s not all. This is a spiritual, mental, emotional and physical retreat among trees, acres of landscaped gardens and the Suffolk countryside: the site runs a bunch of bookable holistic therapies including yoga, massage, meditation, reflexology, reiki, shamanic healing, cranio-sacral osteopathy and Indian head massage. Your Suffolk hidey hole is a glamping site with a heated swimming pool (available in spring and summer only), a tennis court and access to a large field for picnics with views over farmlands and birdsong in the background. Nights here are pretty special too – owls tooting and starry skies might feature due to low light pollution and local wildlife. There’s plenty of car parking on site for your outward adventures – but first, you might want to check out the pubs, tearooms and restaurants in Lavenham (five minutes’ drive) or pick up supplies from the farmer’s market, food shop, butchers, bakers and grocers there. There are more pubs in the surrounding villages such as Preston St. Mary (five minutes). Lavenham is a historic location too, with well-preserved medieval buildings, a museum, guildhall and church. Walking tours will show you to smaller nooks and crannies and if you’re feeling particularly lively, there’s a walk from old Lavenham to the Long Melford Great Eastern Railway Line, a disused railway station. Back at your peaceful base, there’s wifi to go around. If you’re interested in the treatments or therapies, be sure to book in advance, as they are subject to availability.

Long Melford (15 minutes’ drive), yet another attractive Suffolk village, has antique shops and art galleries. This frequent film location is close to the Nethergate Brewery & Distillery (15 minutes), where there are local beers and spirits to be tasted. If you’re more of a wine aficionado, Giffords Hall Vineyard (15 minutes) runs vineyard tours in the Upper Stour valley. If it’s high-quality walks you’re wanting, The Railway Walks (10 minutes), Bradfield Woods National Nature Reserve (15 minutes), the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (40 minutes) and Flatford Mill (40 minutes) are some prime settings. Those of you who like going out with the intention of getting a little lost may also like the maze at Nowton Park (15 minutes). Historical locations instead? Kentwell Hall (20 minutes) hosts historical re-enactments while West Stow Anglo Saxon Village (35 minutes), the Museum of East Anglian Life (25 minutes), Gainsborough's House (20 minutes), Abbey Gardens (20 minutes) and National Trust properties such as Ickworth (25 minutes) and Melford Hall (15 minutes) all revive different parts of history.
