  • Peaceful site on a working family farm for a back-to-basics break
  • In the protected Dedham Vale area, a 25-minute drive from Colchester
  • A 10-minute drive from Dedham for rowing a boat on the River Stour
Entertaining the idea of exploring an excellent part of Suffolk? Brilliant – here’s a back to basics base for doing just that. The family-run Weylands Farm is a simple site set up specifically for a wild camping experience around a 25-minute drive from Colchester in the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It’s close to an area known as ‘Constable Country’, littered as it is with landscapes captured by the artist in a selection of paintings on display at London’s V&A Museum and Edinburgh’s Scottish National Gallery. Chuck Flatford Mill and Willy Lott’s Cottage, around 20 minutes east of the park, on the agenda if you want to see the scenery from Constable’s art, then stroll through the ancient woodland, meadow and fenlands north west in Arger Fen & Spouse's Vale nature reserve (20 minutes). Visitors could also drive to Dedham (10 minutes) and rent a boat to row along the River Stour, or just stick closer to the site and wander down by the River Box a few minutes’ walk away. Just an hour and 50 minutes’ drive from London, this site is in a fab location for a quick foray in England’s countryside. Please note that there are no toilet or shower facilities at the park.

Local attractions

Dedham (15 minutes) is one of the main places to pootle through from the park. Poke your nose around the door of St Mary’s Church, a 15th-century structure with a 131-foot tall tower, then admire a clutch of colourful buildings awash in oranges and reds. Next, drop by the Munnings Art Museum, the old home of artist Alfred Munnings, making sure to linger awhile in the lush gardens. Continue from here to Flatford (40 minutes’ walk) for the RSPB wildlife garden before heading over to Willy Lott's Cottage (20 minutes’ drive) to survey the subject of Constable’s classic painting The Hay Wain. Another spot that looks like it could be immortalised in a work of art is Beth Chatto's Plants & Gardens (25 minutes), a famed outdoor space created by the well-known plantswoman. Seeking indoor amusement after all those open-air pursuits? Amble around the East Anglian Railway Museum’s range of locomotives and rolling stock, a handful of which are completely restored (half an hour). Much to the sheer glee of tiddlers, three are converted into replicas of Thomas, Percy and Toby from Thomas the Tank Engine.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: The location, beautiful countryside with views all around. Very spacious with few pitches.

Disliked: It was a bit tricky to find a flat position to place our tent and the ground was quite stoney to get the tent pegs in.
