Phillips Farm: Open field with plenty of room for a kick about or to fly a kite

General

  • Wild camping field in farming country near Mildenhall in Suffolk
  • A 30-minutes drive to Go Ape Thetford; 40 minutes to Ickworth House
  • Barbecues permitted, archery on site; near pubs, takeaways and shops

Set among rural fields close to family strolls in Suffolk’s Thetford Forest Park, Philips Farm is a simple site with a wild-camping vibe. You can keep everything shipshape with chemical waste disposal, a washing-up station and drinking water, while long drop loos in the woods assure some discretion.

Open fires are permitted in a firepit, with wood and kindling on sale at the site, so you can get a barbecue going and cosy up around the flames. Pick up supplies from the major supermarket in Mildenhall (10 minutes’ drive), or do away with cooking altogether and go for takeaway burgers, pizza and noodles. With plenty of pubs to snuff out in quiet country lanes, you’ll never be short of a pint around here either.

If you and the family fancy trying out something new, the site owners can pre-book activities for you, from clay-pigeon shooting to axe throwing, archery and air-rifle shooting. If this all sounds too hardcore, maybe you’d prefer wild swimming or boating on the Little Ouse river at Santon Downham (25 minutes’ drive).

Just so you know, the site is 15 minutes’ drive from RAF Lakenheath – and the F15s take off weekdays around 8am. While some guests will cheer them as they fly over the camping field, others may not be quite ready for their early-morning reveille. There are also boarding kennels nearby, and the dogs can be heard barking at feeding time.

Please note

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Please note that the toilet facilities are unisex.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Beautiful location, I pitched between the tree's. The toilet facilities were outstanding, a nice area to do the dishes and fill up with fresh drinking water. As a wild camp experience this was quite a luxury.

Was provided a huge firepit free of charge and I purchased a decent amount of dry wood for an extra £10 in addition to wood that I brought with me. Despite the weather (Storm Arwen), still managed to get the fire going.

Despite being there during Storm Arwen, of just strong winds in my book, I could still here aircraft taking off from Mildenhall or possibly Lakenheath which made my day.

The owners are lovely, friendly and relaxed people. Greeted on arrive and even made sure I survived the storm 🤣

I would quite happily stay here again and again.

    Disliked:

Nothing to dislike about the location or facilities.

Not a dislike but on the neighboring field there are some kennels, during the day they are quite noisy but they were quiet at night. The barking didn't bother me or my own dog anyway.

Again, not a dislike, but this field is quite soft underfoot, which I've found on several farm fields I've stayed in. I would make sure you take suitable tent pegs if the weather is going to be adverse.

Super friendly, made me feel so welcome when I arrived and made time to check up on us too! Really lovely location, so relaxing and you can tell they’ve put a lot of effort into making it more than just a field, loved staying amongst the trees :) simple facilities but that’s all I needed, they were clean and well looked after.

Location, amenities, friendliness and helpfulness of owners. Kennels are close and you can hear the dogs barking, but we knew this before we booked and it had no impact on our stay. Loved that we could borrow a fire pit at no extra cost and buy logs there.

Great being able to park next to the pitch. Makes setting up / packing away easy.

Dog friendly. Camp fires allowed. Nice friendly and helpful owners.

    Disliked:

Not a dislike as such but just be aware that this site has drop toilets only and no showers. All of this is fully and clearly communicated prior to staying. But this is a simple semi wild camping experience with one basic sawdust WC and a washing up area. As long as you know this prior to booking then it’s all good.

From the manager...

Two clean long drop toilets. Being increase to 4 by the summer 2022

Phillips Farm is absolutely lovely. Me and my husband camped here for 4 days during bank holiday weekend with our 2 month old daughter. We had such a peaceful and relaxing time that we ended up coming back the weekend after!! The first weekend we stayed in the proper campsite area and the next time we camped at the far end of the field! Both were great spots. The compost toilets are spotless and the washing up facilities are awesome! Stephen and his wife are beyond lovely and so helpful. They are such genuine and kind camp hosts...We will be coming back any chance we get!!

Local attractions

It should be child’s play to tire the kids out, with activities like quad go-karting at Red Lodge Karting (20 minutes’ drive), a canopy adventure course in the forest at High Lodge (30 minutes), and off-road motorbiking at Mildenhall Moto-Cross (10 minutes). Go Ape Thetford (30 minutes) is yet another option for energetic kids.

If you’d prefer gentler pursuits, golfers are well provided for, with several courses within 30 minutes’ drive. Thetford Forest Park (10 minutes) has plenty of family-friendly walks through woodland and heath, where you can also let the dog have a run around too.

You won’t go short on culture either: see how our ancestors lived in the open-air living history museum at West Stow Anglo Saxon Village (20 minutes), or check out the ruins of a medieval manor house at Weeting Castle (20 minutes). National Trust-owned Ickworth (40 minutes) is also well worth exploring for its ornate central rotunda and priceless art collections.
