  • Wild camping field in farming country near Mildenhall in Suffolk
  • A 30-minutes drive to Go Ape Thetford; 40 minutes to Ickworth House
  • Barbecues permitted; near pubs, takeaways and shops
Set among rural fields close to family strolls in Suffolk’s Thetford Forest Park, Philips Farm is a simple site with a wild-camping vibe. You can keep everything shipshape with chemical waste disposal, a washing-up station and drinking water, while long-drop loos in the woods ensure some discretion. Open fires are permitted in a firepit, with wood and kindling on sale at the site, so you can get a barbecue going and cosy up around the flames. Pick up supplies from the major supermarket in Mildenhall (10 minutes’ drive), or do away with cooking altogether and go for takeaway burgers, pizza and noodles. With plenty of pubs to snuff out in quiet country lanes, you’ll never be short of a pint around here either. If you and the family fancy trying out something new, you may want to go wild swimming or boating on the Little Ouse river in Santon Downham (25 minutes’ drive). Just so you know, the site is 15 minutes’ drive from RAF Lakenheath – and the F15s take off on weekdays around 8am. While some guests will cheer them as they fly over the camping field, others may not be quite ready for their early-morning reveille. There are also boarding kennels nearby, and the dogs can be heard barking at feeding time.

What customers say

Phillips Farm offers spacious, peaceful wild camping with ample room for privacy. Campers appreciate the clean, well-maintained compost toilets and washing-up facilities. The rural location is ideal for plane spotting, and the friendly, helpful owners add to the welcoming atmosphere. Options include large open fields and secluded woodland glades. While occasional aircraft noise and barking from nearby kennels are noted, most guests find the site offers a relaxing and enjoyable escape.

Liked The Size of the caravan site is like Air airport in Luton, 1 mile wide and 1 mile deep, completely unbelievable

Disliked Next door, Kennel should employ a dog trainer, I think, and you know what I mean

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked Lots of room to pitch and well maintained compost loo and wash up- good wild camping

Disliked The noise of the dog kennels is constant- wish owner had warned me that the noise was worst in the wooded area- I had to move pitch as noise was too much- better once moved away from the wooded area.

From the manager: We are sorry to read that you didn't enjoy your stay and that you would not be returning or recommending us to a friend.
Sadly the noise from the kennel is out of our control. This is why we warn our guests in our site booking information.

Local attractions

It should be child’s play to tire the kids out, with activities like quad go-karting at Red Lodge Karting (20 minutes’ drive), a canopy adventure course in the forest at High Lodge (30 minutes), and off-road motorbiking at Mildenhall Moto-Cross (10 minutes). Go Ape Thetford (30 minutes) is yet another option for energetic kids. If you’d prefer gentler pursuits, golfers are well provided for, with several courses within 30 minutes’ drive. Thetford Forest Park (10 minutes) has plenty of family-friendly walks through woodland and heath, where you can also let the dog have a run around too. You won’t go short on culture either: see how our ancestors lived in the open-air living history museum at West Stow Anglo Saxon Village (20 minutes), or check out the ruins of a medieval manor house at Weeting Castle (20 minutes). National Trust-owned Ickworth (40 minutes) is also well worth exploring for its ornate central rotunda and priceless art collections.
