Wild camping in suffolk
Hidden in the woods
Summer at lions row wild camping in suffolk.

  • Peaceful, family-friendly and spacious wild camping on a Suffolk farm
  • Sutton Hoo 10 minutes’ drive and The Suffolk Punch Trust 20 minutes
  • Off-grid site on a working farm; pets welcome; woodland walks nearby
When it’s a ‘proper’ Suffolk wild-camping adventure you’re after, have a look at Lions Row, a spacious back‑to‑basics site on a working farm just outside Ufford. It’s completely surrounded by countryside, but only a handy five minutes’ drive from the pubs, takeaways and shops in Wickham Market. You'll park at the edge of a three-acre meadow and walk around 50–250 yards to the pitches, which are mown into the long grass. It’s a clever spot for families as it’s a mile from the nearest road, making it quiet and safe for kids to roam freely without any danger from traffic. As this is wild camping, facilities are minimal: drinking water, a simple washing-up sink, compost loos and basic gas-heated outdoor showers are your lot. However, you’ll wake up to birdsong every morning and go to sleep by starlight on clear nights; just remember to bring torches and batteries for after-dark wanderings. The views are peaceful and rural, and the field is bordered by deciduous woodland – great for exercising any four-legged pals – criss-crossed with footpaths leading to country pubs (there are four within half an hour’s walk). It’s also close to heritage attractions such as Sutton Hoo (10 minutes’ drive).

What customers say

This is a peaceful, back-to-basics campsite set in a beautiful, quiet location with spacious pitches. Guests enjoyed the wildlife, scenic views, and proximity to local pubs. Facilities, including basic but clean showers and toilets, were generally well-received. Hosts are frequently described as helpful and welcoming. Some feedback indicated a need for more facilities during peak times and improvements to toilet privacy and shower roofing. The ground can be hard, particularly during dry spells. Managers are actively addressing feedback and working on improvements.

Woodland non-electric forest floor campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Located a beautiful pitch in the woodland (pitch 1) right near the toilets but no odours. Charlie welcomed us and had a chat before setting up for the night. He recommended Shingle Street for sunrise which was a brilliant spot. All sign posted and easy to find. Will be booking again, thank you.

From the manager: Thank you so much for the wonderful review! We’re thrilled you loved your spot in the woodland—Pitch 1 is definitely a favorite for balancing that secluded feel with easy access to the facilities. I'm so glad we could help make you feel welcome and that you enjoyed the trip out to Shingle Street for the sunrise (it really is a magical spot!). We can't wait to welcome you back for another stay soon."

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Spoilt by the glorious weather, there was nothing not to like here at Lions Row. If you're looking for back to basics, simple (almost) wild camping, this is your ticket.

Wonderful views and sounds of nature (watching the rabbits dart about at sunrise was amazing) - topped off by lovely hosts, Charlie and Jess; I had a brilliant stay.

The compost loos/chaps urinals and showers all do the job and well placed. Sinks and fresh water available; not much more you can ask for.

Lovely to meet you too, and we can't wait to welcome you back to Lions Row soon! — Charlie & Jess

Local attractions

Start your Suffolk wanderings with a potter around the historic market town of Woodbridge (15 minutes’ drive), where you can stroll along the River Deben and tour the tide mill (one of two left working in the country). For further immersion in English culture, visit the burial site at National Trust - Sutton Hoo (15 minutes) to see the Anglo-Saxon treasure trove and ship excavated in the 1990s. Continuing with the heritage theme, Orford Castle (25 minutes) is a monumental 12th-century edifice built by King Henry II; it is open for exploration of the keep, chapel and towers. Framlingham Castle (20 minutes) might also be on your sightseeing schedule for its rampart walks and 19th-century workhouse museum. If the kids get restless, ditch the history lessons and head for the shingle Aldeburgh beach (half an hour), or have a stroll around the salt marshes and heathland of Deben Peninsula National Landscape (15 minutes). You can also go kayaking and paddleboarding on the Deben (10 minutes), meet rare horses at The Suffolk Punch Trust (20 minutes) and have a day communing with sheep, goats and alpacas at Easton Farm Park (15 minutes).
