Wild Camping in Suffolk
Hidden in the woods
Summer at Lions Row Wild Camping in Suffolk.

  • Peaceful, family-friendly and spacious wild camping on a Suffolk farm
  • Sutton Hoo 10 minutes’ drive and The Suffolk Punch Trust 20 minutes
  • Off-grid site on a working farm; pets welcome; woodland walks nearby
When it’s a ‘proper’ Suffolk wild-camping adventure you’re after, have a look at Lions Row, a spacious back‑to‑basics site on a working farm just outside Ufford. It’s completely surrounded by countryside, but only a handy five minutes’ drive from the pubs, takeaways and shops in Wickham Market. You'll park at the edge of a three-acre meadow and walk around 50–250 yards to the pitches, which are mown into the long grass. It’s a clever spot for families as it’s a mile from the nearest road, making it quiet and safe for kids to roam freely without any danger from traffic. As this is wild camping, facilities are minimal: drinking water, a simple washing-up sink, compost loos and basic gas-heated outdoor showers are your lot. However, you’ll wake up to birdsong every morning and go to sleep by starlight on clear nights; just remember to bring torches and batteries for after-dark wanderings. The views are peaceful and rural, and the field is bordered by deciduous woodland – great for exercising any four-legged pals – criss-crossed with footpaths leading to country pubs (there are four within half an hour’s walk). It’s also close to heritage attractions such as Sutton Hoo (10 minutes’ drive).

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Great location, close to beaches for walks swims & beautiful scenery, really enjoyed watching kite surfing on Shingle street, beach, Thorpeness very quaint and peaceful, very close to amenities. Charlie has real gem of a site and was always ready to offer his time and any help if needed, the campsite was spick and span, and check out time at 4pm was big bonus. Looking forward to next visit.

Disliked Having to leave :(

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you so much for the fantastic review! Having "having to leave" as your only dislike is about the highest compliment we could ask for!

We're so glad you enjoyed the quiet atmosphere, the birdsong, and having plenty of space to relax and play. Keeping our meadow paths maintained, keeping our rustic eco-facilities clean, and making sure everyone feels welcome are huge priorities for us. It’s also great to hear you made the most of the fantastic footpaths directly from the campsite—they make exploring the Suffolk countryside and walking to our local country pubs near Woodbridge so easy!

It was an absolute pleasure hosting you at Lions Row Camping, and we’d love to welcome you back for another family wild camping escape whenever you need a peaceful break.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Nice open fields. Hot water. Nice pitch up areas. Friendly and helpful host. Toilets had lots of toilet roll. Overall a nice weekend

Disliked Rocky ground although couldn't be helped, it hadn't rained for a long time and the ground was solid!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you so much for taking the time to share your review! We're thrilled to hear you had a great weekend and enjoyed our open fields, spacious pitch areas, and nice hot showers. We always try to keep those basic essentials—like hot water and well-stocked toilets—spot on for our guests!

Mother Nature definitely gave us a challenge with the dry weather making the ground tough, so we really appreciate your understanding there. Being an authentic, off-grid Suffolk wild camping site, the ground can bake pretty firm in the summer heat! We always recommend bringing heavy-duty rock pegs just in case.

We're so glad you had a lovely, relaxing stay with us at Lions Row Camping. We hope to welcome you and your family back for another peaceful getaway near Woodbridge and our local country pubs soon!

Liked Good size field with plenty of space. Back to basics campsite, facilities more than adequate to enjoy a good camping weekend.

Disliked Not so much a dislike but a roof on the shower may be handy for drying when it’s also raining, other than that nothing

From the manager: Thanks so much for taking the time to leave us a review! We're glad you enjoyed the spacious fields and had a great weekend taking in the simple pleasures of back-to-basics family camping in Suffolk.

We really appreciate the feedback about the showers! Our open-air, off-grid eco-showers are designed to give guests that authentic outdoor feel under the sky, but showering in the rain can certainly add an extra layer of wild camping! We’re always looking at subtle ways to improve the guest experience while keeping our rustic charm intact.

It was a pleasure hosting you at Lions Row Camping, and we hope to welcome you back again soon for another relaxing break near Woodbridge and our local village pubs!

From the manager: Thank you so much for the great review and for recommending us to your friends!

We're thrilled you enjoyed the quiet, peaceful atmosphere on your forest pitch. There's nothing quite like tucked-away, woodland camping in the Suffolk countryside for a truly relaxing, off-grid escape. Keeping things uncrowded and tranquil so our guests can unwind, sit around a campfire, and enjoy easy access to nearby Woodbridge and our local country pubs is what it's all about.

We’re so glad you plan to visit us again, and we look forward to welcoming you back to Lions Row Camping for another peaceful break in the trees!

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked The field. The atmosphere. The location.

Disliked The 'facilities' are a bit rough and ready, but basically ok.
Washing up sink needs to be a bit 'smarter'.
Water supply/heating needs sorting out.
Lack of shaded plots. I would find it hard to be there in extremely hot weather.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to share your honest feedback! We’re so pleased you enjoyed the spacious field, peaceful atmosphere, and our fantastic location in the Suffolk countryside.

As an off-grid wild camping site, we definitely lean into a rustic, back-to-basics feel, but keeping things clean, functional, and comfortable is always our goal. We appreciate your notes on the washing-up area and water heating—we're constantly looking at simple, eco-friendly ways to smarten up our setup without losing the charm of authentic family camping. Regarding shade, our open meadow pitches do catch plenty of sun, though we do have a few sheltered spots tucked near the hedgerows and trees for warmer days.

It was great hosting you at Lions Row Camping, and we hope to welcome you back again for another relaxing break near Woodbridge and our local village pubs!

Best regards,

Lions Row Team

Local attractions

Start your Suffolk wanderings with a potter around the historic market town of Woodbridge (15 minutes’ drive), where you can stroll along the River Deben and tour the tide mill (one of two left working in the country). For further immersion in English culture, visit the burial site at National Trust - Sutton Hoo (15 minutes) to see the Anglo-Saxon treasure trove and ship excavated in the 1990s. Continuing with the heritage theme, Orford Castle (25 minutes) is a monumental 12th-century edifice built by King Henry II; it is open for exploration of the keep, chapel and towers. Framlingham Castle (20 minutes) might also be on your sightseeing schedule for its rampart walks and 19th-century workhouse museum. If the kids get restless, ditch the history lessons and head for the shingle Aldeburgh beach (half an hour), or have a stroll around the salt marshes and heathland of Deben Peninsula National Landscape (15 minutes). You can also go kayaking and paddleboarding on the Deben (10 minutes), meet rare horses at The Suffolk Punch Trust (20 minutes) and have a day communing with sheep, goats and alpacas at Easton Farm Park (15 minutes).
