Mown pitches in the long grass

  • Peaceful, family-friendly and spacious wild camping on a Suffolk farm
  • Sutton Hoo 10 minutes’ drive and The Suffolk Punch Trust 20 minutes
  • Off-grid site on a working farm; pets welcome; woodland walks nearby
When it’s a ‘proper’ Suffolk wild-camping adventure you’re after, have a look at Lions Row, a spacious back‑to‑basics site on a working farm just outside Ufford. It’s completely surrounded by countryside, but only a handy five minutes’ drive from the pubs, takeaways and shops in Wickham Market. You'll park at the edge of a three-acre meadow and walk around 50–250 yards to the pitches, which are mown into the long grass. It’s a clever spot for families as it’s a mile from the nearest road, making it quiet and safe for kids to roam freely without any danger from traffic. As this is wild camping, facilities are minimal: drinking water, a simple washing-up sink, compost loos and basic gas-heated outdoor showers are your lot. However, you’ll wake up to birdsong every morning and go to sleep by starlight on clear nights; just remember to bring torches and batteries for after-dark wanderings. The views are peaceful and rural, and the field is bordered by deciduous woodland – great for exercising any four-legged pals – criss-crossed with footpaths leading to country pubs (there are four within half an hour’s walk). It’s also close to heritage attractions such as Sutton Hoo (10 minutes’ drive).

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked The owners were informative, responded quickly to any inquiries, and were very friendly. The fire pit was great, we were given plenty of fire wood.

Disliked The ground is very rocky and bumpy, you should bring more than just roll mats! Might be because of lack of rain but the ground was very hard to get pegs in.

From the manager: Hi Beth,

Thank you for your review. I am glad you had a lovely time on our opening weekend.

Yes the ground is hard. We have had no rain for over a month which is the issue. It also means the grass has not grown that well. Lets pray for rain.

Going forward we are going to make sure where possible that visitors with tents are near the wood as the grass is better there and the ground not as hard.

Hope to see you again

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked The friendliest owners, take up their offer of a venison steak if there are some available! Large pitch, well spaced, away from the road with great walking routes directly from the field. Washing up facilities, compost toilet and (hot!) shower appreciated. Look out for the signs from the road, and trust you’re going the right way.

Disliked Nothing - I stayed when there were only a few others pitched up so I can imagine the facilities will get busy during peak.

From the manager: HI Rebekah,

Thank you for your kind review. I am glad you had a lovely time on our opening weekend

The plan is to build more showers & loos as we get busier. We wanted to test the design of the ones we have built first.

Hope to see you again

Local attractions

Start your Suffolk wanderings with a potter around the historic market town of Woodbridge (15 minutes’ drive), where you can stroll along the River Deben and tour the tide mill (one of two left working in the country). For further immersion in English culture, visit the burial site at National Trust - Sutton Hoo (15 minutes) to see the Anglo-Saxon treasure trove and ship excavated in the 1990s. Continuing with the heritage theme, Orford Castle (25 minutes) is a monumental 12th-century edifice built by King Henry II; it is open for exploration of the keep, chapel and towers. Framlingham Castle (20 minutes) might also be on your sightseeing schedule for its rampart walks and 19th-century workhouse museum. If the kids get restless, ditch the history lessons and head for the shingle Aldeburgh beach (half an hour), or have a stroll around the salt marshes and heathland of Deben Peninsula National Landscape (15 minutes). You can also go kayaking and paddleboarding on the Deben (10 minutes), meet rare horses at The Suffolk Punch Trust (20 minutes) and have a day communing with sheep, goats and alpacas at Easton Farm Park (15 minutes).
