  • Pop-up site in rural Suffolk near Stowmarket and Bury St Edmunds
  • A 30-minute drive from Thetford Forest Park and Ipswich river cruises
  • Stay in an old orchard with a playground on site
Want to be in deepest countryside but close enough to a town for a spot of shopping or a night in the pub? Check out the offerings at Whitehouse Farm, set in six acres of glorious rural Suffolk, well away from roads and traffic noise and yet only 20 minutes’ drive from the pubs and indie shops of Bury St Edmunds. This is also a super spot for kids, as there is a playground with climbing equipment on site and some fab family walks directly from the farm – you can bring the pooches too, but they need to be kept on leads please. The pitches are located in the meadow, just beyond where the shepherd huts sit in the old orchard among damson, apple, pear and greengage trees. Shared facilities include loos, showers, a water tap, a washing-up area and a laundry room. You can pick up supplies in Stowmarket (15 minutes’ drive) – and if you don't fancy cooking, well… those Bury St Edmunds pubs await. For chilly evenings, a sauna is also available (chat to site staff for more details).

What customers say

This is a well-maintained, friendly campsite with clean facilities and a strong emphasis on nature. Guests praise the peaceful atmosphere, the swimming pond and sauna, and the helpful owners. While most campervan pitches are well-received, a few guests found them to be small and less private. Play areas and the natural setting are popular with families.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked "A hidden gem! Whitehouse Farm, Uppertown, Wetherden, Stowmarket, Suffolk, IP14 3ND, is the perfect place to get away and reconnect with nature. It’s wonderfully peaceful, but there is still plenty of space for the kids to run around and explore safely. The Rob and his wife are so friendly and clearly take great pride in keeping the site tidy. The toilets, washing up area and showers were always spotless, which is a huge plus when camping. Dedicated places for tents, campervans. They even have a sauna, pound for swimming in nature, thats sercurly fenced off. Highly recommend this site to anyone looking for a relaxed, family-friendly, couples or solo get away.

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch

Liked The campsite was small and secluded. We had the one woodland camping pitch and it was great as we much rather woodland than a big field - but once we arrived we realised that the field wasn't too oversized and we would have been fine there too. I think there was a max of 8 tents on the field, so not crazy. The owner was very friendly and spoke to us on both days. They live on site so easy to access if there are any issues. It was very peaceful. Parking is nearby which was fine for us but it's a little bit further for the field - I think there were only two wheelbarrows to help with carrying your things. We were unable to get one for pitching but we snagged one for our takedown. The pond was sweet, there is a playground for children, and a 'fitness' loop around the site too.

Disliked The only downside for us was our neighbours. They had three small dogs and refused to put them on a lead, despite it being a site rule. There were many other dogs on the site which were tied up, but this couple became verbally aggressive when we asked them to tie them up, despite their dogs walking all over our pitch and at one time trying to get into our tent. This was mentioned to the owner but his response was 'they don't seem fond of the lead' or something similar, which was disappointing.

From the manager: We're sorry that the neighbours dogs were not kept under control. We did request that they be kept on a lead at the time. Unfortunately they only partially adhered to that request. We were unaware that the dogs had been wandering around the other woodland pitches annoying other campers, as when we spoke to this camper they did not mention that detail, and the dogs were at that point within the realms of the shepherd hut where they were staying. Had we been made aware of any aggressive response and continued lack of control, we would have taken matters further.

Local attractions

The pretty town of Bury St Edmunds (20 minutes’ drive) holds a local market every Wednesday and Saturday, where you can pick up foodie bits and pieces. It also has indie shopping, a spectacular cathedral, brewery tours and popular restaurants for a respite from all the sightseeing. Alton Water (40 minutes) is a top spot for canoeing and sailing, and any rainy days are covered by the swimming pool in the leisure centre at Stowmarket (15 minutes). A day trip to the Norfolk Broads (45 minutes) to hire a day-cruiser boat is also a firm family favourite, or you might like to have a go at punting along The Backs in Cambridge (an hour) – if that’s too much like hard work, take a look at the city’s historic colleges instead. When the kids need a runaround, hire bikes for off-roading at Thetford Forest Park (half an hour) or let them try out the treetop rope courses at Go Ape Thetford (45 minutes). If only a beach day will do, Aldeburgh (an hour) has a sand and shingle stretch that's safe for swimming, and a popular fish and chip shop for after you’ve had a dip.
