  • Pop-up site in rural Suffolk near Stowmarket and Bury St Edmunds
  • A 30-minute drive from Thetford Forest Park and Ipswich river cruises
  • Stay in an old orchard with a playground on site
Want to be in deepest countryside but close enough to a town for a spot of shopping or a night in the pub? Check out the offerings at Whitehouse Farm, set in six acres of glorious rural Suffolk, well away from roads and traffic noise and yet only 20 minutes’ drive from the pubs and indie shops of Bury St Edmunds. This is also a super spot for kids, as there is a playground with climbing equipment on site and some fab family walks directly from the farm – you can bring the pooches too, but they need to be kept on leads please. The pitches are located in the meadow, just beyond where the shepherd huts sit in the old orchard among damson, apple, pear and greengage trees. Shared facilities include loos, showers, a water tap, a washing-up area and a laundry room. You can pick up supplies in Stowmarket (15 minutes’ drive) – and if you don't fancy cooking, well… those Bury St Edmunds pubs await. For chilly evenings, a sauna is also available (chat to site staff for more details).

The Muntjac Cabin 1 bedroom cabin

Liked Location and cabin it self are great

Disliked If going with pets, owners asking keep them on the leash all the time, and walking they dogs always passing by the cabin, what really affects privacy.

From the manager: I'm glad that this camper thought the Cabin and the location were great, but I have to disagree that our site isn't good for dogs. We (like most sites) ask that dogs be kept under control. Unfortunately this campers two dogs were running around without either supervision or control, running up to other campers and their dogs & children. They also ran across private areas setting off my two dogs into a barking frenzy in our garden. On the two occasions I walked past when this was going on I did indeed ask them to put the dogs on a lead - not unreasonable when considering not all campers like dogs (not even all dogs like other dogs and need to be kept apart), and most small children don't like them running up to them uninvited. We love having dogs here, there are walks from the site onto surrounding tracks trails and public footpaths, all we ask is that dog owners have a little consideration for other camp site users - which the vast majority do!

Wildlife, nature (Hare, barn owl, pheasants)

Disliked Only two showers for up 10 tents plus the huts and campers
Bins a long walk from pitches
Noisy kids past 10pm (riding bikes at speed along narrow pathway etc)

From the manager: Thanks for the kind words, and I'm sorry that our 10pm "quiet time" wasn't adhered to by others (unfortunately we were away that weekend so I wasn't around to enforce the rules). At busy times (like the bank holiday when you visited) a couple more showers would be a benefit, which is why we have plans to build another toilet block with 4 more toilets and showers. However most of the time what we currently have serves our campers well. The bins are away from the camp site because the bin lorries won't come down our beautiful tree lined driveway. Most people simply take their rubbish with them when leaving site and pop it in the bins as they go past. This works quite well for most people, and preserves our car free, child safe camping site.

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch

Liked I can’t believe we found such a gem on Pitch Up. First off Rob the host and his wife were very welcoming and provided info on the facilities and what to check out in the near by town. The site was so peaceful, and the woodland pitch was spacious. The shower and toilet facilities were nice and clean, and the hot water felt so good ! We tried out the sauna which was straight forward and reasonably priced for a couple , which was 25 pounds. We dipped into the pond for a cold plunge too. I highly recommend this site. Thank you Rob 😊

Liked Good area, nice shower and toilets. Enjoyed my stay.

Disliked Nothing to really dislike, I’ve been to other camp sites which had a fridge which people could use. Which was a nice touch.

Local attractions

The pretty town of Bury St Edmunds (20 minutes’ drive) holds a local market every Wednesday and Saturday, where you can pick up foodie bits and pieces. It also has indie shopping, a spectacular cathedral, brewery tours and popular restaurants for a respite from all the sightseeing. Alton Water (40 minutes) is a top spot for canoeing and sailing, and any rainy days are covered by the swimming pool in the leisure centre at Stowmarket (15 minutes). A day trip to the Norfolk Broads (45 minutes) to hire a day-cruiser boat is also a firm family favourite, or you might like to have a go at punting along The Backs in Cambridge (an hour) – if that’s too much like hard work, take a look at the city’s historic colleges instead. When the kids need a runaround, hire bikes for off-roading at Thetford Forest Park (half an hour) or let them try out the treetop rope courses at Go Ape Thetford (45 minutes). If only a beach day will do, Aldeburgh (an hour) has a sand and shingle stretch that's safe for swimming, and a popular fish and chip shop for after you’ve had a dip.
