  • Quiet rural campsite on the track of the old Mid-Suffolk Light Railway
  • In central Suffolk, half an hour's drive from Bury St Edmunds
  • Simple campsite in the grounds of a farm; half a mile from the A140
Take the little ones to stomp through the Suffolk countryside or find a peaceful plot for a catch-up with friends at Brockford Sidings Campsite, a quiet rural site on the trackbed of the old Mid-Suffolk Light Railway. Although no trains have passed this way since the 1950s, it's still possible to see what the line known affectionately as the 'Middy' was like if you walk five minutes over the road to well-preserved Brockford station, where there's a volunteer-run museum and part of the track is still open to visitors. This low-key campsite is set on a large arable farm in central Suffolk in a convenient location half a mile from the A140 and the small village of Wetheringsett. The larger town of Stowmarket and the A14 dual carriageway are a 15-minute drive away to the west, meaning almost all of East Anglia is within easy reach. This is a dog-friendly site that's very close to a good number of cosy country pubs. The nearest are about a mile away, but the site owners recommend bringing a bicycle for the full Suffolk pub crawl experience.

Electric grass pitch

Liked A lovely clean site, with generous pitches. Showers and toilets are well stocked and very clean.
We loved the midi bar on Friday night and enjoyed a lovely pint of shandy in a buzzing atmosphere. This was just a short walk from the campsite.
Would also recommend the cedar pantry farm shop and café for delicious food and drinks. The owners are very friendly and welcoming to very hot sweaty customers! 🤣

Electric grass pitch (large)

Liked Quiet, rural site. The surroundings are so peaceful and relaxing. Stayed on a large pitch, ample space for our large 6-man tent, trailer and car. Shower/toilet facilities basic but clean and tidy. Showers aren't push button which is a bonus. Small play area for children. Dog walking field that is fully enclosed. Close to a local farm shop/cafe (The Ceaders Pantry) and a local bar (Middy Bar) open on a Friday evening at the Mid Suffolk Light Railway. There is also a tea room open at the MSLR, too. We will definitely return.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Ideal rural location to decompress and relax in beautiful surroundings. Well maintained site with plenty of space to ensure privacy.

I slept, in the open under a basic tarp and was greeted at 4.30am by a Duck which was a lovely encounter with the wildlife and my wildlife camera picked up a fox and a Muntjack.

The toilet, shower and washing facilities were ultra clean. I will return and would definitely recommend for a short break.

Disliked Was surprised to note their is a dog training business next door. Although I love nature, my stay was disturbed by dogs barking and reacting angrily to each other's presence. Thankfully this was short lived and only happened a couple of times but I think this should be more obvious when booking.

I can imagine the toilets get overwhelmed quite quickly when the site is fuller.

Local attractions

After taking the kids to learn about old-fashioned travel at the Mid-Suffolk Light Railway Museum (five minutes' walk), take them off for animal encounters, agricultural insights and pony rides at Easton Farm Park (30 minutes' drive), or venture in the other direction towards Framlingham Castle (30 minutes) for family-friendly adventures on a medieval theme. If you liked that, then Henry II's unusual polygonal tower at Orford Castle (50 minutes) should be right up your street too. While here, make time to take in Orford village's pretty traditional cottages and welcoming pubs, or follow the sound of the waves and explore the wild wetlands of Orford Ness National Nature Reserve (50 minutes). More coastal capers await at spectacular spots such as Aldeburgh (55 minutes), Thorpeness (an hour) and Southwold (an hour), all of which are located within the gorgeous Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Birdlife abounds in this biodiversity haven – your hosts particularly recommend grabbing a pair of binoculars and heading to the well-camouflaged hides at RSPB Minsmere (an hour) and Walberswick (an hour).
