  • Quiet rural campsite on the track of the old Mid-Suffolk Light Railway
  • In central Suffolk, half an hour's drive from Bury St Edmunds
  • Simple campsite in the grounds of a farm; half a mile from the A140
Take the little ones to stomp through the Suffolk countryside or find a peaceful plot for a catch-up with friends at Brockford Sidings Campsite, a quiet rural site on the trackbed of the old Mid-Suffolk Light Railway. Although no trains have passed this way since the 1950s, it's still possible to see what the line known affectionately as the 'Middy' was like if you walk five minutes over the road to well-preserved Brockford station, where there's a volunteer-run museum and part of the track is still open to visitors. This low-key campsite is set on a large arable farm in central Suffolk in a convenient location half a mile from the A140 and the small village of Wetheringsett. The larger town of Stowmarket and the A14 dual carriageway are a 15-minute drive away to the west, meaning almost all of East Anglia is within easy reach. This is a dog-friendly site that's very close to a good number of cosy country pubs. The nearest are about a mile away, but the site owners recommend bringing a bicycle for the full Suffolk pub crawl experience.

What customers say

This is a quiet, clean, and well-maintained campsite with spacious pitches and friendly owners. Facilities, including toilets and showers, are consistently praised for their cleanliness. The railway theme, including accommodation in converted carriages, is a unique and popular feature. While generally peaceful, some guests noted potential noise from other campers or nearby roads. Some minor issues were raised regarding the number of facilities during peak times and occasional difficulties with self-check-in instructions.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Lovely camp site, children could play out and about and we could still keep an on them from our tent.

Disliked Wasn't too keen on the size of the pitches, felt a bit too crammed in, our tent literally just fitted in the space, with a small amount of seating outside at the side of tent.

Toilets and showers hadn't been cleaned for the 4 days we had stayed and the bins were very full.

Railway Wagon camping pod (four person)

Liked A lovely campsite, with nice hot showers and clean toilets. We stayed in a simple waggon camp pod, which was perfect for what we needed.

Disliked The only down side was that campers are not allowed to hire the swimming pool.

Railway Wagon camping pod (four person)

Liked Loved the railway hut, the setting was beautiful and we loved the family vibe. Price was good value.

Disliked Bathroom set up was nice but could be improved. As it is a uni-sex space it would be better if the dividers between shower and toilet cubicles went to the ceiling, this isn’t a problem unique to this site but it make people feel vulnerable somewhat.
In this survey the Choice of “travelling as” doesn’t allow couple..

Electric grass pitch

Liked location was good for walks and to the steam train attraction.

Disliked There was no reception other than a piece of paper in a phone box to sign in and therefore some of the other campers abused the site with multiple electric bikes trying to see how fast they could go around the site.

Carriage One 2 bedroom camping pod (four person)

Liked Great time here. Very well kept area. Didn’t see any rubbish laying around. The train carriage it self was very clean comfy. And was very surprised to see how big the shower was. Mostly quiet. Although small tv was great little add(any I didn’t really notice how small it was when we watched it one evening). Little climbing frames and goals great when traveling with children. Quite a few plug sockets. Runner on the floor are a good add but sometimes it was a bit slippery when getting off the chairs around the table. Mattress was really comfy and my 15 year old and 11 year old slept on the bunk beds well. And said they were comfy. Internet access was iffy. I didn’t get much in the living room area but did in the bedroom(about 5 steps away) but again not a biggy.

Disliked Was a bit confusing when checking in. I had to ask a camper if they knew where to check in and was a bit confusing where the keys were but it only wasted about 10 mins or so. Did try phoning the two numbers on the ad but noone got back to me or answered.

Not the owners fault but the kids on bikes swearing and saying things I wouldn’t expect from young children wasn’t the most pleasant thing to hear.

Local attractions

After taking the kids to learn about old-fashioned travel at the Mid-Suffolk Light Railway Museum (five minutes' walk), take them off for animal encounters, agricultural insights and pony rides at Easton Farm Park (30 minutes' drive), or venture in the other direction towards Framlingham Castle (30 minutes) for family-friendly adventures on a medieval theme. If you liked that, then Henry II's unusual polygonal tower at Orford Castle (50 minutes) should be right up your street too. While here, make time to take in Orford village's pretty traditional cottages and welcoming pubs, or follow the sound of the waves and explore the wild wetlands of Orford Ness National Nature Reserve (50 minutes). More coastal capers await at spectacular spots such as Aldeburgh (55 minutes), Thorpeness (an hour) and Southwold (an hour), all of which are located within the gorgeous Suffolk Coast and Heaths National Landscape. Birdlife abounds in this biodiversity haven – your hosts particularly recommend grabbing a pair of binoculars and heading to the well-camouflaged hides at RSPB Minsmere (an hour) and Walberswick (an hour).
