Peacock Farm Paddock: Camping paddock

General

  • Grass pitches at a Suffolk working cattle farm, with dogs welcome
  • Southwold, Walberswick and RSPB Minsmere within 15 minutes' drive
  • Just off the A12, a couple of minutes' walk from an artisan bakery

If what you seek is a Suffolk site with both rural outlook and supremely simple transport options, Peacock Farm Paddock could well be the place for you. Pitches here are within the grounds of a working farm, so you’ll be looking out over a grassy field – but you’ll also be just off the A12 for easy road trips.

And if you’d rather get about by public transport? That’s possible too, with Darsham railway station just over a mile away (about 15 minutes’ walk). And with public footpaths just by the site, you can head out to explore the area on foot without any issue, too.

All of this means that this is a most handy location for days out along the Suffolk coast – Southwold, Walberswick and Dunwich are within a 15-minute drive, and it’s only a little further to birdwatching exploits at RSPB Minsmere.

It’s not just the transport options that are convenient here, either: a couple of minutes’ walk gets you to an artisan bakery and café for a tasty start to the morning, and there’s a garage/shop a mile away for any other bits you might need. Back at base, barbecues and campfires are both permitted, and there are simple facilities in the form of portaloos in the field.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

Lovely paddock site, small and welcoming21/09/2021

The site is small and well situated in a lovely paddock, with nice big pitches that you can choose yourself. The owner was very welcoming and I felt very relaxed and safe camping here as a solo female.
It is pretty basic (which I liked), the only facilities were two slightly cramped portaloos.

I was also looking forward to meeting the chicken but she didn't turn up!

The only downside as has been mentioned before is the noisy A12 but I travel with earplugs so it didn't keep me awake..

    Noisy road
Horrible night with a couple that played loud music till 3 am not owners fault but no one noticed!
Should have a strict 11 pm curfew like most sites

From the manager...

Thank you for your kind review and I am pleased you liked the paddock. I am very sorry about the loud music that disturbed your night - obviously a very inconsiderate camper. I shall indeed impose a curfew for future seasons.

Lovely English farm, helpful hosts, but road noise maybe issue29/08/2021

Rupert and Charlotte were very friendly and helpful. The site is small and cozy; it only has capacity for 10 tents, which is brilliant because it can never feel too crowded here. And with a rural farm outlook, as well as some large beautiful trees and some wandering chickens and a dog it provides a very safe and secure English farm setting.
Facilities seemed clean and well cared for on a working farm close to Southwold beaches. Only a 15 minute drive to the beach.

    Disliked:

The only negative comments I would provide is, that the noise from the main road is a little too much and far too close to the actual camping area. Children slept fine but I found it far too noisy to sleep deeply/properly.
There was also a very strong smell of manure which I assume was fertiliser which had been freshly spread to the farm field adjacent to the camping area recently. Such a shame because it’s not ideal if you’re trying to sleep in a well ventilated tent. Also no WiFi on site which may be an issue for some. Aside from these 3 issues above it is a great campsite.

From the manager...

So pleased you enjoyed your stay. We do state that the paddock is close to the A12 so some road noise is to be expected but it does die down in the evening and the night is usually quiet. As for the smell of manure, we are a working farm and there is a pile of manure on a field near the site, not a strong smell, but that's what you get from a farm!

This is camping as it used to and should be! A working farm paddock with basic facilities and that is exactly how we like it. Close to Southwold, Walberswick and Dunwich, ideal for Minsmere.

Our hosts were the most welcoming and friendly people with good advice given on local facilities and attractions.

If you like your camping ''all singing and all dancing'' then this is not the place for you. If you like peace and good value then I highly recommend Peacock Farm.

BTW I have had to mark wifi down as there is none. But then why would you want it? You're camping after all !!!

    Disliked:

This is not a dislike particularly but to point out that the site is close to the road however traffic dies down at night and a peaceful sleep was had so all good with us.

From the manager...

Thank you for your kind comments.

I was camping in my Classic VW Camper with a friend and my Border Collie and we had a day at Southwold which is only up the road. The campsite being just off of the A12 is a great location. If you are looking for a glamping site with facilities this is not for you. Toilets are basic and kept clean. This is an ideal site if you're on a budget or just stopping for a night like us.
We were greeted with a friendly face and before leaving another friendly face asked how are stay was and wished us well on our journey. Is a working farm and watched hay bails being gathered. I am sure that I will be staying again.

The distance to so many attractions, the family greeting me on arrival! It’s a perfect place. Bring your tent, pitch up and explore the local area. Framingham castle, Sutton hoo, dunwich, southwold, lowerstoft, local pubs, car shows etc. So much to do in the surrounding area! Also if you want to go latitude, get day tickets and stay here! It’s 2mins up the road! It’s dog friendly too! Bring yourself and your imagination and enjoy a really cheap staycation! Also the family are a farming family, stay here and help local businesses!
