  • Family-friendly Suffolk holiday park on the edge of Kessingland
  • Africa Alive five minutes’ drive; Great Yarmouth half an hour
  • Three swimming pools, fishing lake, tennis court, playground and bar
Do you like to be beside the seaside? Heathland Beach Caravan Park might have just made it to the top of your wish list, then. This holiday park is on the outskirts of Kessingland (five minutes’ drive or a 25-minute walk), a coastal village with a sand and shingle expanse dotted with marram grass tufts. Unleash the kids on this Suffolk beach, and who knows – they might come back to you bearing gifts of a fossil nature. But before you head out for a day on the sand, check out the facilities at this tree-shaded site, starting with not one, not two, but three outdoor swimming pools, including one with a twisty waterslide that ought to keep the kids busy while you relax on a poolside sun lounger, sipping a cold brew from the bar. Children can also make new friends in the enclosed adventure playground, a huge sandpit with wooden structures for climbing and balancing. There’s also an all-weather tennis court (you can hire the necessary equipment on site) and, for a more meditative experience, a well-stocked fishing lake (please note you’ll need a licence). Spacious pitches all come with electric and water hook-up. In addition to a well-maintained toilet and shower block, there’s a communal barbecue area; you can source food supplies in Kessingland, which also has a handful of fish and chip shops and takeaway restaurants (and a skate park for the kids).

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Good size pitches

Disliked: Disappointed as I had booked a pitch to be next to my friend to find that we weren’t, then the pitch they wanted me to go on wasn’t very accessible due to trees etc, I did request to move to the next pitch which was a lot better, still had to trim some little branches off to get the caravan on the pitch. Toilets weren’t very clean ok they were old but still can be clean ended up using my own shower. The block I was close to only had 4 rooms which had shower & toilet together so wasn’t good if only needed the toilet. No warden was going round regularly to check everything was in order I understand it was the summer holidays but cleaning and patrols should be stepped up at busy times, especially with so many children about and playing ball near peoples caravans/tents. Such a shame as the pitches and space was lovely just a shame the lack of cleaning and patrols let it down.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Fabulous site with large pitch to enable us to erect our large awning. Our family joined us for a couple of nights. Found the staff extremely friendly and helpful. There was plenty going on we joined in the pool party. The bar was excellent with good prices. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the only regret is that we were unable to stay longer. Will definitely be returning.

Disliked: Very disappointed in the wi-fi. I purchased three days worth which cost me £14 and this was supposed to cover ten appliances - it rarely worked for me let alone anyone else in our group we also struggled to get our tv to pick up channels

Electric grass pitch

Liked: we have just got back from our first time staying here, can't wait to come back. Nice spacious pitches, we stayed in our tourer. Heated pool, nice park for kids, short walk to the beach which is dog friendly all year round, fishing lake, nice bar with friendly bar staff. Great location, 5 minutes from Morrisons for essentials and petrol. Africa alive is just 5 minutes from the campsite which was a good day out and great yarmouth just 30 minutes drive. Deffo reccomend staying here.

Disliked: No dislikes. The only issue I could see, as a woman, especially if your staying in a tent is the ladies toilets. They had no sanitary towl bins in the toilet cubicles, just a black bin outside by the sinks which isn't very discreet . They have two toilet blocks onsite, newer ones and older ones. I only used the old ones as they was closer to my caravan, so can't comment on the newer toilets.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: The atmosphere was lovely, ideal for all ages, plenty of things to do around the site. Everyone was welcoming and facilties were all in good working order, Showers, toilets laundry were all regularly checked, stocked and clean. We took our dog with us and was very dog friendly. The Beach which is pebble stone as you go towards the sea is a about a 10min casual walk from the site grounds too. Although there is a steep step way down but very all usable. Variety of Shops were all near by the site. Everything was spot on and value for money! 25 min drive to Great Yarmouth seafront which was ideal.

Disliked: Some dog owners did allow there dogs of lead on their pitch and they kept going onto others pitches. Maybe walk around from staff could encourage visitors stick with the rules for the dog owners as we did.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Great campsite with some lovely parks for our little one to play in, the whole park is clean and well maintained thanks to the many staff that work tirelessly to keep it that way. The site was always quiet after 10pm on our stay. And the pitch size was generous with Water point on each pitch made things really easy. There are two toilet blocks on the touring and camping area one new one with all In one facility rooms and the other older one with separate toilets, showers. Both always clean and well maintained. The swimming pool was great and our little one loved it the slide was a great addition although a little chilly on windy days! We loved our week here and even our dislikes would come down to personal preference so won’t mark it down!!

Disliked: During our stay we used the new toilet shower wet rooms, in theory this is a great and convenient idea when camping but for us just didn’t quite work when showing with a little one it was far too easy for them to walk and then play with the toilet after a shower! So we used old ones with a shower only! For adults and older Children this is perfect hence not marking it down. Also on our stay due to the campsite being full the swimming pool needed to be booked for one hour slots again not a problem, unfortunately the booking process involves having to sign up with a young gentleman at 0930 each morning to book your slot. There has to be a better way to do this but I understand the need! And for us wasn’t an issue this year as our two year old loved the excitement of walking to book the swimming, but did limit our morning to ensure we could book a time slot.

Local attractions

Cheetahs, giraffes, rhinos and flamingos are among the residents at Africa Alive (five minutes’ drive). Experiences at this conservation zoo range from ‘keeper for the day’-type affairs (where kids help to feed and clean the animals) to close encounters with lemurs and meerkats, and feeding sessions with the giraffes. Birdwatchers make a beeline for Benacre National Nature Reserve (10 minutes), a breeding site for dozens of bird species, including marsh harriers, woodlarks and ducks. Carlton & Oulton Marshes (15 minutes) is another top nesting site, home to several types of warblers, plus lots of dragonflies. Known for its wide sandy beach, Great Yarmouth (half an hour) also has the historic Britannia Pier, with old-fashioned rides (think dodgems and carousels) and more modern ones, like bungee trampolines. Check out the maritime collections at the Time and Tide Museum of Great Yarmouth Life or the penguin enclosure at Sea Life Great Yarmouth aquarium.
