  • Suffolk farm campsite with smashing wheat-field views
  • A 20-minute drive to Jimmy’s Farm and Wildlife Park, and 30 to Ipswich
  • Peaceful pitches with a fishing lake on site; pub 10 minutes’ walk
Looking to catch some carp on your stint in Suffolk? Situated on a quiet corner of a farm near Ipswich, Wheathill Campsite has a small fishing lake – a fab introduction to fishing for kids as there are lots of carp – right next to its camping pitches. This peaceful field is sheltered by trees and hedging, and there are wonderful views over the valley and wheat fields from the hillside. The shower facilities are spacious and clean, with wheelchair accessibility and a baby-changing mat, and there’s drinking water on site, but otherwise you’re pretty much left to your own devices. The site can dispose of food and dog waste, but all other rubbish must be taken home with you. Even if you’re not an avid angler, there’s still plenty to do. Get the walking boots on and explore the area's footpaths, which can be accessed from the site through the woods. Middle Wood (20 minutes’ walk) and Bonny Wood (40 minutes) are close by, with a diverse variety of natural habitats – but please remember to stick to the footpaths at all times. Another walk from the site may well lead to the pub – families, dogs and muddy boots are all welcome at the local (10 minutes’ walk), which has food vans most weekends. There’s another dog-friendly pub in the next village of Somersham (five minutes’ drive), which serves food and is open from Thursday to Sunday. If you’d rather go down the self-catering route, you can pick up supplies in Needham Market (10 minutes), a small market town with an array of handy shops – and a park where kids can feed the ducks. For fishing supplies, there's a great tackle shop 15 minutes away in Great Blakenham.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Pitches, showers, toilets really clean, weather, views. firepit came with marshmallows, we only used the firepit one night... I do wonder if extra wood, for other nights is included in the £12 fee (we used on last night).

Disliked I wonder if two showers and two toilets is enough for when there's lots of people, we went mid week just before start of school holidays. They did seem to be checked a few times a day however.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked Lovely clean toilets and showers. Washing up area with everything you need! Our 9 year old was constantly in the mud kitchen in the woods! Made a enquiry about the hot shower as was too hot for my little one, the lady got straight onto it and emailed us straight away as we had gone out to let us know that the other shower was adjustable. Lovely location short walking distance to a pub. We just loved it !

Disliked Would have liked a little area with a sink to get washed ,brush teeth etc, but we were in our caravan this time rather than our tent so not a massive issue.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Really well kept site, was our first camping trip as a family with 2 young boys 7 & 3. Lovely secluded spot very peaceful with great views.
Facilities were great, clean, tidy and well kept, nice having the fishing available right outside the tent, all round great and we will be back

Disliked Nothing! The pitch wasnt on even ground and the kids were rolling out of bed but not much can be done there not the fault of the owners, and also being by the lake must keep an eye on the little ones but again these aren’t negatives against the site just points to consider

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Wonderfully peaceful location up on a hillside, overlooking a small fishing lake. Immaculate pitches with picnic table, parasol and firepit supplied. (Firepit pack also supplied on request). Toilet and Shower facilities were well presented and very clean - as was the washing up area. They've thought of everything and I would definitely recommend and would come again.

Disliked The only reason I dropped a star from a 10 was the shower in the morning. The note said the temperature was set but it was cold when turned on so I had to adjust it and could then only get either boiling or cold. I may have mastered it had I stayed longer but it wouldn't put me off going again. The ONLY thing I could fault really.

From the manager: Thankyou for your review, Great to hear that you had a peaceful stay. Apologies you had a cold shower, we are going to look into upgrading them so you can adjust the temperature.

Electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Friendly green site. The lady was very nice. Recommended.

Disliked The way in is unprepossessing but once you get past all the building work and machinery the field and pond are really attractive.

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback. We appreciate your honesty about the approach to the site. As a working agricultural farm there is occasionally tractors/machinery on arrival.
We are pleased to hear that once you reached the site you enjoyed the surroundings.

Local attractions

If you’ve got kids in tow, treat them to encounters with ridiculously cute goats and sheep at Baylham House Rare Breeds Farm (15 minutes’ drive) and if the weather’s good, there are lots of spots for picnics there too. Jimmy’s Farm and Wildlife Park (20 minutes) is another sure-fire hit with the kids, with anteater handling and donkey-grooming sessions, while you can all try the inflatable obstacle course at Alton Water Sports Centre (half an hour), or maybe have a go at dinghy sailing. Keen to get some more casting practice in? Suffolk Water Park (10 minutes) has a large fishing lake and a bait shop, plus a waterfront café, a nine-hole golf course and putting green for any none-fishers among you. For a big night out, hit Ipswich Waterfront (half an hour) with its riverside bars and bistros, and then catch a concert or an art exhibition at St Peter's by the Waterfront (20 minutes), in a former church.
