  • Suffolk farm campsite with smashing wheat-field views
  • A 20-minute drive to Jimmy’s Farm and Wildlife Park, and 30 to Ipswich
  • Peaceful pitches with a fishing lake on site; pub 10 minutes’ walk
Looking to catch some carp on your stint in Suffolk? Situated on a quiet corner of a farm near Ipswich, Wheathill Campsite has a small fishing lake – a fab introduction to fishing for kids as there are lots of carp – right next to its camping pitches. This peaceful field is sheltered by trees and hedging, and there are wonderful views over the valley and wheat fields from the hillside. The shower facilities are spacious and clean, with wheelchair accessibility and a baby-changing mat, and there’s drinking water on site, but otherwise you’re pretty much left to your own devices. Even if you’re not an avid angler, there’s still plenty to do. Get the walking boots on and explore the area's footpaths, which can be accessed from the site through the woods. Middle Wood (20 minutes’ walk) and Bonny Wood (40 minutes) are close by, with a diverse variety of natural habitats – but please remember to stick to the footpaths at all times. Another walk from the site may well lead to the pub – families, dogs and muddy boots are all welcome at the local (10 minutes’ walk), which also doubles as a fish and chip shop, and there’s another dog-friendly pub in the next village of Somersham (five minutes’ drive) too, currently open from Thursday to Sunday. If you’d rather go down the self-catering route, you can pick up supplies in Needham Market (10 minutes), a small market town with an array of handy shops – and a park where kids can feed the ducks. For fishing supplies, there's a great tackle shop 15 minutes away in Great Blakenham.

What customers say

This is a highly recommended, well-maintained, and peaceful small campsite set in beautiful countryside with stunning views. Visitors consistently praise the exceptional cleanliness of the facilities, including toilets and showers, and appreciate the thoughtful touches provided by the friendly and helpful owners. The fishing lake is a highlight for many. Minor points raised include occasional windiness and the need for levelling blocks on some pitches, but overall, guests found it to be a perfect spot for rest and relaxation, with many eager to return.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Beautiful and cosy little campsite. Toilets and bathrooms were very clean with no weird smell. Lots of nature to explore and enjoy. Sarah was kind enough to allocate requested pitch. Thank you.

Disliked The ground slopes a bit. Large family on the other side of the lake talks loudly until nearly 1am (not the campsite owner's fault).

The Nest cabin (pet friendly)

Liked Stayed in The Nest Monday to Friday, first thing you notice is how peaceful it is, just the sound of wildlife and birdsong. Everything you need is supplied, we used the bbq a couple of times and had dinner overlooking the lake - bliss. Used the firepit on cooler evenings toasting marshmallows - more bliss. And the fishing was a lot of fun. A very well run campsite, a perfect week of rest and relaxation. Would definitely recommend.

The Hive shepherd's hut (no pets)

Liked Such a peaceful place. Away from traffic noise and the lake is calming and picturesque as is the surrounding countryside.
My father moved the Hive. Clean and well organized. A cute little place.

Disliked Make sure to take everything you need along with you. Around a 10 minute drive to the local village store which isn’t huge. Probably closer to 20 minutes each way to a supermarket.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thankyou for your review and recommendation. We are hoping to install some vending machines which will save a trip to the shop.
Although the village shop is small it holds some lovely local treats and those essential items.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked Clean facilities and a fantastic view from our pitch over the suffolk countryside. Will require leveling blocks. Having the facility if using a firepit in the evenings was a lovely bonus.

Disliked Driving in from the Needham Market direction the site is not signposted adequately.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for your comments and feedback, We will look into better signage to reach the site.

Local attractions

If you’ve got kids in tow, treat them to encounters with ridiculously cute goats and sheep at Baylham House Rare Breeds Farm (15 minutes’ drive) and if the weather’s good, there are lots of spots for picnics there too. Jimmy’s Farm and Wildlife Park (20 minutes) is another sure-fire hit with the kids, with anteater handling and donkey-grooming sessions, while you can all try the inflatable obstacle course at Alton Water Sports Centre (half an hour), or maybe have a go at dinghy sailing. Keen to get some more casting practice in? Suffolk Water Park (10 minutes) has a large fishing lake and a bait shop, plus a waterfront café, a nine-hole golf course and putting green for any none-fishers among you. For a big night out, hit Ipswich Waterfront (half an hour) with its riverside bars and bistros, and then catch a concert or an art exhibition at St Peter's by the Waterfront (20 minutes), in a former church.
