  • Well-maintained and green site five miles from the Suffolk coast
  • Lake and nature trail on site
  • On-site village shop and off-licence; pub 10 minutes' walk away
Travel five miles inland from the sunny Suffolk coastline and you’ll arrive at this little gem on the outskirts of Wenhaston. The gorgeous, well-maintained grounds at this smart site are just part of the attention to detail all around the park, which has been carefully laid out by the friendly and helpful owners. There's greenery all around here: this small and pretty site has its own nature trail and lake, and is surrounded by acres of countryside for hikes and rambles. If walking isn't your thing, hire bikes from the Southwold Bike Centre (20 minutes' drive away) to pedal around the flats of Suffolk; horse riding's pretty popular in the area too, or you could go golfing at Halesworth Golf Club five minutes' drive away. Taking things (much easier), the local pub is a 10-minute walk down the road. Heathside Caravans has a village shop and an off-licence on site for those holiday essentials, and a well-maintained shower block for guests' use. For more supplies. the village of Halesworth is under 15 minutes' drive away and Aldeburgh, Snape and Beccles are all within half an hour.

What customers say

This campsite is praised for its friendly and helpful staff, well-maintained and clean facilities, and spacious pitches. The location is considered excellent for exploring the Suffolk coast, and the on-site shop is well-stocked and reasonably priced. Visitors appreciate the abundance of open space for children to play and for dog walking. Glamping pods and shepherd's huts are generally found to be clean and comfortable. Some feedback points to limited shower and toilet facilities, particularly during busy periods, and occasional issues with Wi-Fi connectivity. A few reviews mention uncomfortable sofa beds in some accommodations.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Plenty of space away from the sites for ball games etc., a couple of fields just below the Ppsa and camping areas.

Disliked Not much to dislike really. All facilities were kept clean and tidy throughout our 4 night stay.

Shepherd's hut

Liked The site was quiet. The shop was well stocked. They did move us to a non ant infested hut for the second night. You can park right next to your hut, which is convenient. There was wifi. The area was pretty.

Disliked The first hut was infested with ants. Literally hundreds and hundreds of them crawling up the walls and all over the counter and shelves. It also had cobwebs in the corners, and insect cocoons in the window frames. The bin was also full of the last guest’s rubbish- so I don’t think it was well cleaned.

We didn’t realise this till about 10 pm- but texted the contact number to see if we could get help. No reply. The next morning we got a text saying we should have called. No apologies or solution. Just “you should have called” the poster with contact number said contact- not call- but anyway. I went to find the site manager in person the next morning who did, after I requested it, allow us to swap shepards huts.

The ladies toilet and shower block was also not well cleaned. It wasn’t clean when we got there- I noticed various rubbish in the shower, smears and hair stuck to the shower wall and rubbish on the floor which did not change over our stay. I strongly suspect therefore, that over the two nights we stayed the bins were not emptied, the one shower not cleaned and the floors not swept.
I did notice they were advertising for a cleaner via a poster in the shop window- so maybe this is the problem?

The sofa beds in the shepards huts were stained, dog haired and very uncomfortable. We stacked both of the mattresses on the floor and added two mattress toppers and slept on that. Obviously not a solution if there is more than two of you staying!

There are blinds at the two windows-but not at the door window. I woke at 4.20 both mornings when the sun streamed through it. A blind would be useful!

It was very hot in the hut. Obviously it is summer and to be expected- but a fan would have been super useful and appreciated . A heater is supplied, so why not a fan for summer? Or the opportunity to rent one maybe? Or mesh for the windows so you could leave them open all night without loads of moths and mosquitoes coming in?

It was such a shame that these issues arose, as this could have been such a nice hut and site.

Shepherd's hut

Liked Very good. Clean campsite. Nice atmosphere. Fields for play/sport. Good location near the sea.

Disliked Would have like another shower. But only queued once as there’s bathrooms in the pods and mobile homes.

From the manager: We also have the family room/disabled with extra shower for all to use.

Local attractions

After all the walking, cycling, horse riding and golfing, get stuck into the area's history at the 12th-century fortress of Framlingham Castle, half an hour's drive away. Once the refuge of Mary Tudor, this fab place now has exhibitions, themed trails and an audio tour covering its centuries of history: enough to keep young Horrible Histories fans entertained too. Arty sorts will know that Suffolk is Constable country: if this is you, come armed with camera or paintbox to snap and sketch the countryside, harbour and coastal views around the area. You could also take a trip to art complex the Snape Maltings on the Alde river, for events, activities and evening entertainment in the concert hall. Seaside? But of course. Have a stroll around Southwold and its colourful beach huts, or drive half an hour north to Lowestoft for seaside amusements and Pleasurewood Hills, a nifty tucked away theme park with rollercoasters and attractions for all. Walberswick beach, around a 15-minute drive from Heathside, is a popular spot for crabbing. If you’re staying at Heathside for a while, set off early and spend the whole day on the Norfolk Broads (about an hour and 15 minutes' drive north, or drive south for around an hour and a half to the villages of Long Melford and Lavenham with their medieval timber-framed houses.
