  • Peaceful two-acre field a 10-minute walk from Stanton village, Suffolk
  • Bury St Edmunds 20 minutes’ drive; Lowestoft beach one hour
  • Dogs welcome; excellent stargazing; a five-minute drive from a winery
Bromptons Farm, on the edge of the village of Stanton (a 10-minute walk), is a top spot for a peaceful Suffolk holiday. Staying here puts you within easy driving distance of historic towns like Bury St Edmunds (20 minutes’ drive) and Stowmarket (25 minutes), as well as woodland trails like those found in Thetford Forest (25 minutes). The region’s coast is a little farther, with beaches such as Aldeburgh (pebbly) and Lowestoft (sandy) about one hour’s drive away. The site has a two-acre meadow where you can set up freely – there’s no being slave to marked bays here. There’s heaps of room for the kids to run around, and the family dog will almost certainly wag its tail in excitement at the prospect of sniffing every little corner of this great big field. A toilet/shower block, charging facilities and recycling points sweeten the experience further. Hiking (and wildlife-viewing) highlights in the vicinity include the Knettishall Heath Nature Reserve (15 minutes), with grazing wild ponies; and the Norfolk Wildlife Trust - East Wretham Heath Nature Reserve (25 minutes), where you might spot wading birds around the lakes, plus stoats and roe deer. If you need to stock up on grillables, Stanton has a couple of convenience stores, as well as a fish and chips shop for those who don’t fancy tending to hot coals all evening. You can also check out the restaurant at Wyken Vineyards or hit the pubs in Bardwell (both five minutes). After dinner, stretch out on the grass and take in the spectacle of the night sky – with such low light pollution here, stargazing is on a different level.

Meadow non-electric grass pitch

Liked: A lovely clean, quiet and family friendly site. Safe enough to give the children aged 7 to 12 the freedom to roam a and enjoy just being kids. Toilets and showers kept spotlessly clean. There was always warm water for washing up etc

Disliked: If you park at the top of the field like we did you need to be aware of the prevailing wind

Hedgerow fully-serviced grass touring pitch

Liked: This is a lovely site with good clean facilities. You can choose where to pitch and there are no bad areas of the site. The owners are really friendly and made sure all was okay on arrival. It's a short, easy walk (10 minutes) into the village which has a couple of shops and a nice pub where we had a very good Sunday roast. A little further on is a larger Co-Op which looked fairly new and stocked everything you could need. Have already booked for another weekend in July ☀️

Meadow non-electric grass pitch

Liked: New site with lovely countryside views, great sunsets and sunrises, plus peaceful and quiet. Lots of great walks close by for both humans and dogs! A short walk into Stanton, where there were a few shops to stock up and a farm shop a bit further. Elly and all the others on the site were so helpful and even helped me start the car due to a flat battery. Would certainly visit again.

Meadow non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Fantastic find for a last minute break, hosts were lovely and welcoming, leaving us be, but also always there and so helpful when needed. The atmosphere was just so nice, a right mix of being peaceful with beautiful views and when it got a bit busier it had that nice campsite feel. I was sceptical, being a new site and a previous review mentioning being crammed, it's a choose your own pitch place so my first night I had around 25m of space each way, and as it got busier people pitched up at a pretty standard distance. Toilets and shower were always kept clean. I've found my new regular camping site. Thankyou for a wonderful stay

Meadow non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Brendan was really friendly and very welcoming. The site is in a good position and the local vineyard is such a lovely day out and the surrounding area was so beautiful. Lots of great walks to go on. They were very dog friendly which was so nice and felt very safe and welcoming

Disliked: Not a very big site so you do feel really close to other campers and caravans. They were doung work on toilets and shower block so can definitely see that they will look great when done but would have liked to know before we booked as there were people working in the loos so bit awkward. Toilets were often locked from inside so had to get them opened which was not great. This will probably be a non issue once work is all done

Meadow non-electric grass pitch

Liked: A layed back, chilled campsite in a beautiful setting overlooking the countryside. Short walk to the village where there’s shops and a pub. Plenty of space for the kids to run and play. Easy to get to surrounding towns. A lovely spot for our weekend

Disliked: The site is brand new and some bits are unfinished but the bits that have been done are lovely and all facilities are available.

Local attractions

The steam-engine age is alive and well at Bressingham Steam Museum & Gardens (20 minutes), where you might take a ride on a narrow-gauge railway and climb aboard vintage engines. The ‘Dad’s Army’ displays ought to appeal to nostalgic TV buffs, while green-fingered visitors should check out the Japanese garden and ornamental ponds in the 17-acre gardens. An English Heritage property, the 12th-century Thetford Priory (20 minutes) was closed by order of Henry VIII in 1540. Its ruins now spread over a large area just north of the River Ouse. Thetford also has the Dad’s Army Museum and the Thetford Castle Mound, said to be Britain’s tallest medieval earthwork. Norfolk airfields witnessed plenty of action during World War II. Military museums in the area include the 100th Bomb Group Memorial Museum (25 minutes), housed in a former control tower; and the Red Feather Club 95th Bomb Group Museum (half an hour), which tells the story of a US Air Force team.
