  • Tourer park 10 minutes’ drive from Bury St Edmunds in rural Suffolk
  • Ickworth House 15 minutes’ drive and Aldeburgh beach an hour
  • Family-friendly site with a communal kitchen and dedicated dog park
Ready to be soothed by the quiet of Suffolk countryside? Better get your time booked at Bright Meadow Caravan Park, with widely spaced hardstanding tourer pitches set on six acres of level ground surrounded by trees and fields. At 10 minutes’ drive from Bury St Edmunds, it’s a peaceful spot from which to explore the county or stay overnight if you’re heading to Harwich International Port (an hour by car) and on into Europe. There are loads of amenities to spoil you too. The modern toilet block is heated all year, and has showers (if you prefer a bath, there’s one in the ladies’ block) and thoughtful extras like hand dryers, shaving points and hair dryers. You can keep control of the chores thanks to the washing machine and tumble dryer in the laundry room, and prep veg and do the washing up in the small shared kitchen. Chemical disposal, electric hook-up points and fresh water outlets are all available, and your security on site is guaranteed thanks to the PIN-operated security barrier. Dogs are welcome, and there’s a dedicated canine-exercise area on the park. Running short on anything? Replenish provisions in the local village of Thurston (five minutes), which has a post office, general store and petrol station as well as a couple of pubs.

Local attractions

Suffolk certainly holds its own when it comes to the seaside, with a coastline encompassing the shingle beaches and salt-marsh walks of the Suffolk, Essex Coast and Heaths National Landscape (40 minutes’ drive), as well as the pebble beach and 19th-century pier at Aldeburgh (an hour). For a coastal village with a literary connection, visit pretty-as-a-picture Thorpeness (also an hour), where ‘Peter Pan’ author JM Barrie was a regular visitor. There’s plenty more Suffolk heritage to uncover too: visit the great estate at National Trust-owned Ickworth House (15 minutes) to see spectacular collections of silver in The Rotunda and wander formal Italianate gardens. Stately Kentwell Hall (half an hour) is open (check dates before going) for the rare chance to explore a privately owned, moated Tudor mansion. Bury St Edmunds (10 minutes) has centuries of history to discover at the impressive abbey ruins and neighbouring gardens – but if you’ve had enough of culture by now, slope off to the town’s Greene King Brewery for a guided tour of the brewing process and a crafty pint.

Electric gravel and hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: - The facilities are very good and are kept clean - Friendly and polite owners - Site is secured with a pin-code barrier - Hardstanding pitches are a good size and flat - Easy access to the nearby Bury St. Edmonds - The coast, Southwold, is an easy 50 mile drive - Site Wi-Fi is free, unlimited devices and a good speed

Disliked: - Site is more than half full with permanent tourers with people living in them - The bookable touring pitches are mixed up within the permanent one's - The 10A RCD trip kept cutting-out when you turned on more than one appliance or an appliance plus the heater - Connectivity to the site Wi-Fi can be a bit hit/miss. Managed to connect phones okay, but TV kept dropping the connection

Electric gravel and hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: The facilities were nice and clean, and a great place to stay to visit Bury St Edmunds and the surrounding area.

Disliked: It took a while to find the fresh water tap, as it's not where you would expect it to be. I had to wander around and found it between two motorhomes. Quite close to the A14, a constant rumble can be heard at peak times, although the road does get quieter after 10 and on weekends.

Electric gravel and hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Very helpful and responsive site warden . Lorraine does a brilliant job in keeping the amenities spotless. Very good transport links to Cambridge and bury st edmounds .

Disliked: We had anti social campers next to us we moved pitches this was sorted easily with a phone call and as no reflection on the site. Busy road you need a car to access local towns.
