General

  • Disabled-friendly pub site on the edge of the Norfolk Broads
  • Two miles from the A143
  • Open farmhouse kitchen, log fire and spacious dining area in gastropub

You might reckon that a place called the White Lion would be a pub campsite. And you'd reckon right – but without a visit to Wheatacre's White Lion Campsite on the edge of the Norfolk Broads, you might not reckon on its warm and amiable welcome, friendly regulars, peaceful surroundings and splendidly rural setting while not having to stray too far from civilisation…

Newly taken over by Nicola and Joe in 2016, the White Lion is in a countryside location for those who want to make the most of the Norfolk Broads but be within easy reach of the facilities and attractions of Lowestoft, Great Yarmouth and Norwich. It's on two acres of grassland surrounded by mature trees, a mile from the Broads and half an hour from Southwold.

And you might reckon you want to hear about the pub. The White Lion is a gastropub and a free house, with a spacious oak-floored dining area, a log fire, and locally sourced produce used where possible in its open farmhouse kitchen. Free wifi is available throughout.

Please note that the site doesn't have shower or toilet facilities.

Only a 15min drive from lowestoft and 30min from great yarmouth.
    Very clean and well maintained.

    Disliked:

Lack of a shower block and a playground was a bit annoying but didnt have any real negative impact.

Nothing - we didn't stay as the pub was closed and no one answered the 2 phone numbers we called.

    Disliked:

Lack of contact to let us know that the pub is closed during the day on a Sunday, despite advertising as being open for food from 11 to 11.
The soiled water disposal is right next to the fresh water tap.
£25.50 to stay in a field without the pub or food.
The long journey back home and the day we wasted.

Peaceful countryside in nicely cut paddock with level pitches. Easy cycle ride to Beccles and other tourist spots.

    Disliked:

    1. We had intended to have a meal at the White Lion when when arrived and were disheartened to be told they had lost their chef 2 weeks earlier. Had this been made clear on line when we were booking we would have gone elsewhere.
    2. The pub is closed for several hours every 24 so there doesn't appear to be any access too toilets which is not ideal for those in tents.
    3. Like many other sites the drinking water tap is in close proximity to the cassette emptying point which isn't perfect.

Well maintained level pitches with electric hookup.

    Disliked:

No toilet facilities outside of pub opening hours. This needs to be made clearer. Pub advertised as a gastropub but no longer serving food as they haven't been able to employ a chef. Advertising needs to be updated.

Pitches were nice 29/07/2017

    Pitches were nice

    Disliked:

Disliked your advert as being, the pub was open from 11am-11pm and could use their toilets during those hours also the pub did food. Wrong!!! too both of those.

when we arrived the pub was not open it seemed the staff had walked out or so we were told by the other campers. It opened again four days later, but still no food and I wouldn't call it friendly. So it didn't match up with your advert and we were very disappointed. We moved on from there and found another little site at Haddiscoe behind a pub that did do food. The site also had showers and toilets which were spotlessy clean. and the site itself was very well looked after. That too was £16 a night, money well spent.

The site itself was very clean and tidy. Could certainly do with more electric hook up points.

    Disliked:

The site/pub is advertised as being open 11am until 11pm with restaurant. The pub was not open on the Sunday or Monday and the restaurant was not open the whole time we were there. The pub on the one occasion. We went in was tastefully decorated but lacked atmosphere and the landlady did not appear to have a sociable approach and did not make us feel welcome .

Local attractions

The boat trips, nature spotting, ambling and pedalling of the Norfolk Broads can all be accessed a mile from White Lion Campsite from its local river the Waveney, flowing between the border of Norfolk and Suffolk for most of its Broads-based meander. The pub's local town is Beccles, a small market town on the Waveney where boats can be hired at the lido for hours or afternoons out.

If you prefer your water of the salty variety, the Suffolk coast is close to base too: the beach at Dunwich is about 20 minutes away, and both Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth are under ten miles. Southwold, home of those beach huts and that pier, is about half an hour away.

Kids should be pleased with trips to Pleasurewood Hills near Lowestoft or to Africa Alive! At Kessingland, two of the many family-friendly attractions in the area.
