  • Family-friendly wild camping site on the Norfolk/Suffolk border
  • Beccles 10 minutes’ drive; Southwold and Oulton Broad 25 minutes
  • Honesty shop and play area on site; ice-cream van at the weekend
Wild camping it may be at Rose Orchards Wild Camping, a pop-up site just outside Barsham village on the Suffolk/Norfolk border, but it’s wild camping that comes with lots of splendid facilities. It’s near the River Waveney, only 25 minutes’ drive to the beach at Southwold, and if that’s not quite enough, the site is also close to all the water-based action of the Broads National Park. So, where to start? It’s an excellent spot for kids, with a selection of play equipment on a large dedicated field, including slides, sand pits, a rope swing and trampolines. There’s also a basket-ball hoop, football goal posts and a tyre pyramid. So that’s them sorted. Also on site is an honesty shop with cold drinks and fresh eggs – the latter delivered daily by the hens that range freely, along with their pals the ducks and peacock – and an ice-cream van makes an appearance at the weekend. Other useful facilities include a water tap, washing-up sink and picnic benches for eating outdoors. Fires and barbecues are allowed on the camping field, with firewood, kindling and firelighters available to buy. Anything you need food-wise can be sourced at the local farm shop (five minutes) or Beccles (10 minutes) supermarkets, and if you’re just not that into alfresco catering, well, you have a choice of pubs and takeaways within 15 minutes by car.
