Black Barn Farm: Electric Pitches

General

  • Peaceful adults-only touring site two miles from the Norfolk Broads
  • A 15-minute drive from Norwich city centre; 25 minutes from the coast
  • Atmospheric night-time vibes from lit woodlands

If boating on The Broads has long been on your bucket list, the dog-friendly Black Barn Farm is a peaceful place to pitch up two miles from the edge of the national park. Here, the adults-only touring pitches are in a 22-acre field in an established orchard and surrounded by woodlands, making for a rather chilled-out stay.

This area is known as the big sky country, so splendid sunsets and lights in the trees create a pretty nice night-time vibe. You’ll be able to kick off the evening with a firepit or barbecue too, as both are permitted on site.

A 15-minute drive from Norwich, this site is on the edge of Salhouse, a rural Broads village. So, bridleways and footpaths may be the first thing to capture your attention, as they lead the way to walking, wildlife spotting and canoe hire in the Salhouse Broad – or there's a place to launch your own canoe or paddleboard, two miles away from the site.

Convenience is key at this site, starting with the toilets and showers inside the barn, all heated with auto light switches for that extra ease. Then, there’s a train station and bus station within walking distance of the site with regular services to Norwich city centre or the coast.

Foodie? The local food shop is a 20-minute walk away along a public footpath (or a five-minute car journey). For more specific bits, there’s a bigger supermarket 10 minutes’ drive away and beer aficionados will find a brewery and pub five minutes’ drive away too.

Please note

Guests under the age of 18 are not allowed on site.

Bit far from any shops to get supplies. No clear instructions as to rubbish disposal/recycling. No soap in hand wash dispensers. Bit annoying when paying £25 a night.

Excellent basic campsite for a hassle free holiday04/11/2022

The pitches are spacious and sheltered and have good electrics and own tap. They are level and easy to pitch on. The washrooms are new - plenty of hot water and the showers are excellent. It is hassle free, being unmanned, and good value for money. The location is convenient for the northern broads, and the Woodfordes Brewery pub is a short drive and serves excellent food. It is very peaceful and good for folk who just want the basics. We enjoyed our stay and would come again.

    Disliked:

The washrooms are lovely and new but after a couple of days they became rather grubby and obviously weren’t thoroughly cleaned every day.

2nd trip to this hidden gem of a site. Helped by the fact there were only two others campers the peace and tranquility was amazing. Curious chickens a bonus, pitch toilets and showers impeccably clean, friendly unobtrusive staff. Good location for local sights and coast not too far away. What’s not to like? Shame we missed on site farmers market bad timing on our part. Didn’t want to leave and will definitely be back. Excellent WiFi tv reception a welcome boost

    Disliked:

Bad weather might cause egress issues on grass pitches, but didn’t happen to us and being a working farm there’s always the tractor to help! Would not put me off recommending the site. Always an adventure.

Nosy about Norwich (15 minutes’ drive)? Those of you who are keen to weave a bit of the seaside into your way will want to head on over to the sandy beach and dunes at Winterton beach (35 minutes) or onto Great Yarmouth (25 minutes). This seaside resort town is all about the traditional, including a funfair, sandy beaches and the SEA LIFE Great Yarmouth (half an hour) aquarium.

Thrigby Hall Wildlife Gardens (25 minutes) has red pandas, tigers and leopards among them, while Pettitts Animal Adventure Park (25 minutes) couples up snakes, wallabies and alpacas with rides and playgrounds.
