Peggy's Pasture Campsite: Greenery and trees

General

  • Friendly and peaceful family-run riverside site just outside Norwich
  • A 25-minute drive into the city centre and 45 minutes from the coast
  • Kayaking, canoeing and fishing on site; pubs and food shops nearby

Roll out of bed and launch a kayak, canoe or any other river craft directly from Peggy’s Pasture Campsite. This riverside site has a private stretch on the river Wensum, making it a ripe spot for families to check in for some downtime.

Family-run, things are pretty peaceful on this gently sloping two-and-a-half-acre Norfolk site, 25 minutes’ drive away from the centre of Norwich and 40 minutes’ drive from splendid seaside towns such as Cromer and Great Yarmouth (a nice day trip for crabbing, snorkelling or fish and chips).

Whether you’re a seasoned fisher or a complete newbie, cast out your rod for some private fishing at the on-site river (available when you buy a fishing day pass on site). And after you’ve splashed around with some watersports, there’s an amenities block to shower off. All the activities are certainly thirsty work, so you'll be happy to find you can top up your water stores with fresh drinking water on site.

When it comes to food, there are plenty of pubs, bars and restaurants within five minutes’ drive of the site, making it easy to treat yourself to a cold drink, takeaway or a meal out. Handily, there's a food shops five minutes’ drive away too, so you’ll be well-set to make sure you’ve got some snacks to hand as you head around Norfolk's nature reserves.

Please note

Units longer than 7 metres are not allowed.

No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

A cable measuring at least 20 metres is needed for the electric hook-ups.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

This is a quiet site: no music is allowed.

Quite pretty location and the river was lovely with in easy reach of Norwich and the Swan pub up the road did great food, the owners were very friendly. Good sized pitches.

    Disliked:

There where only 2 toilets in sort of portercabins although clean there was always a queue and 1 shower which was very small and cramped nd never felt very clean, this is not enough for a site which can hold 120 or more people , no hot water to wash up dishes . We are seasond campers and have stayed in many sites both in the UK and Europe and found thisto have the worst sanitation facilities we have seen. There was no safe pontoon to get into our boats just 2 old pallets a d a ladder. For the money we paid we expect better facilities.

    Owners were friendly on arrival.

    Disliked:

We found the facilities at this campsite really difficult to deal with. There were two individual cramped toilets with tiny washbasins resulting in queues in the evening. The single shower was tiny and didn't feel clean. To be honest we dreaded having to use these facilities and we're seasoned campers having visited all around the UK and Europe. There was no hot water to wash up so we couldn't really cook on site nor even take a basin of warm water to wash with at the tent. Really, really disappointed as these are basic needs to keep your family clean.

Lastly the site is not kept tidy. There were broken down/neglected vehicles around and generally an air of disrepair and neglect.

Because of the above I feel the site is really overpriced and over promises. I am also not sure how the positive Google and TripAdvisor reviews (prior to July this year) are possible - they don't reflect what we experienced or observed.

we were made very welcome as soon as we arrived . pitched next to the river which was very pleasant to stand or sit beside . daily visits from the swans (they should pay site fees lol ) . The site was easy to find via google maps. Toilets and shower were cleaned throughout the day . We were cold at night and our host brought us a heater . next day they brought us a table but we had 1 , i was too lazy to put it up lol . They always stopped to talk to you even if they were busy .Its a short drive to the town center and some lovely historical sites . Theres swimming , fishing and a couple of different types of boats , the boats have a small charge but not expensive . The most important thing was how quiet and peaceful it was at night .

Campsite is based directly on the river bank making it perfect for kayaking along the picturesque river.
Relaxed feel from campsite owners, no long winded fussing around getting on the pitch.
Genuine, down to earth, no nonsense people and the campsite has a natural feel to the place.
The pitch we were on was VERY big with huge amount of space.

Liked the river that the kids could play in

    Disliked:

There wasn’t anything apart from the rope swing and river to swim in for children. It was very crammed in that some people’s tents were touching others. People were asked to move pitches as the owner hadn’t allocated properly. Our electric stopped working after 3 days luckily we were going home on the 4th day.
There is 1 shower on the whole site which was dirty, the shower curtain had seen better days and I stead of being white was now an orangy browny colour. There must have been complaints about it as it was changed after our 2nd day. You didn’t have any space to dress in the shower so had to walk out in a towel.
There were only 2 toilets for the whole site which again were not very clean and the tank at the back had to be pumped by the owner daily to reduce overflow and the smell was horrendous. The ownert was even there with bare hands emptying baby wipes and sanitary products from the tank infront of us. She moaned every time we saw her about the toilets and how women are disgusting.
She mopped the shower with the dirtiest mop I’ve ever seen. It was probably cleaner before it was mopped.
Water was hot in the shower which was the only good thing, no hot running water to wash up and the sink drained straight onto the floor.
We had to pay an extra £20 which we wasn’t told about for our car, and was then told we couldn’t use the car park as she was having a horse box delivered. So had to park it down a dirt track.
There is a charge for everything.
Fire pits, kayaks, have to use their logs only in the fire pit. And things are not cheap!
    It’s all cash payments.
If there would have been more facilities to wash in and more for the children to do, even a field for them to run round in would have been great.
We were told as we were leaving if we loved it great leave a good review, if we didn’t then to shit our mouths and not tell anyone!!!!

For those of you with all the band along, family days out aren’t far away. Roarr! Dinosaur Adventure (10 minutes’ drive) for a theme park party prehistoric-style or BeWILDerwood Norfolk (half an hour) for an adventure park that’s all about treehouses, much more monkey-style. That’s not forgetting Pleasurewood Hills Family Theme Park (55 minutes), with all its rollercoasters, rides and animal shows.

What of those nature-packed places too? Well, when you make your way to The Broads (25 minutes), a national park with rivers and lakes, it’s easy to dive right in with some watersports. Or you could take your pick of walking, cycling and wildlife spotting from Mid-Yare National Nature Reserve (half an hour).

There are a load of activities on the seaside too, from crabbing or snorkelling in Cromer (40 minutes) to playing around the amusement pier in Great Yarmouth (40 minutes). As for the city, well, Norwich (25 minutes) is a good nook for a cathedral or castle caper or bargain-hunting in the market.
