  • Peaceful tourer site on the edge of Shotesham village in South Norfolk
  • A 20-minute drive from Norwich and 40 minutes from Great Yarmouth
  • Dogs welcome; pub 25 minutes’ walk and shop 10 minutes’ drive
Whether you’re looking for a quiet spot to overnight on an East Anglia trip or planning to stop around and explore the Norfolk Broads from a touring site without the crowds, Hengate Farm Campsite might just be the spot for you. It’s a family-friendly South Norfolk farm site with just a handful of pitches available on a level camping meadow sheltered by trees. Accessible via a decent track and with views over woodland, wildflower meadows and open countryside, this pint-sized site is on the outskirts of the pretty village of Shotesham, with its Anglo-Saxon church and postcard-perfect thatched cottages. Dogs are welcome on site (please keep your dogs on leads around the sheep grazing in neighbouring fields), and there are peaceful strolls or cycle routes along rural lanes surrounding the farm. The convenience store in Poringland (10 minutes’ drive) will keep you topped up with essentials, and there’s a welcoming pub in Shotesham – if you want to leave your vehicle behind and make a night of it, you can walk there in 25 minutes. A tea room, butchers and a farm shop selling deli goods, pasties and sausage rolls are in Brooke (five minutes' drive). And of course historic Norwich (20 minutes) is packed with lively bars, cafés and dining options.

Local attractions

Hengate Farm is springboard to explorations of The Norfolk Broads; around Wroxham (half an hour’s drive) you can hire sailing boats, go fishing, cruise down the River Bure and have a ramble along waterways in Mid-Yare National Nature Reserve (25 minutes). If the weather’s not too great, spend some time marvelling at the intricate train sets and model villages in Wroxham Miniature Worlds (half an hour). If you’d rather head for the seaside, take long strolls along the quiet sands at dog-friendly Caister-on-Sea (40 minutes) or Hemsby (45 minutes). If you need a few family facilities along with your beach trip, there’s a great sandy sweep at Great Yarmouth (40 minutes), where you can have a dip in the waves, potter around the amusement arcades along Britannia Pier, and eat fish and chips on the seafront promenade. Animal-mad families can spot tropical fish in aquariums and watch penguin-feeding sessions at SEA LIFE Great Yarmouth, or enjoy gentle themed carousel rides at Pettitts Animal Adventure Park (40 minutes). Daredevils may prefer to chance their luck on the thrill rides at Pleasurewood Hills Family Theme Park (45 minutes).
