Counting Sheep Glamping: Cheviot shepherd's hut

General

  • Modern family-run glamping site two miles from the Norfolk coast
  • A 10-minute drive from the beach; 25 minutes from The Broads
  • Pub and shop a short walk away; barbecues and campfires allowed

From crabbing off Cromer’s pier to catching waves down the local beach, at Counting Sheep Glamping, you’ll be strapping in for a right old ride along the Norfolk coast, no matter whether it’s watersports or simple fish and chips on the seafront you have in mind. A 25-minute drive away from The Broads too, this modern site has a dedicated and friendly family at the helm, including Stuart, his wife Donna and their three children.

The Norfolk coast, just two miles away, has a crafty way of reeling you in. It might be down to its scenic coastal walks or its laidback beaches, but either way, you’ll only have 10 minutes’ drive to reach the closest sandy beach in Mundesley (a safe swimming spot with surfing activities).

You’ll be able to get in some real relaxation on site too, as the modern facilities have a homely feel and barbecues and campfires are permitted to help stir up some merry memories.

The site is just outside the village of Trunch, where there’s a pub serving food within five minutes' walk of the site. Handily, there's a small shop here, perhaps for any missing bits from your luggage or energy-boosting snacks to power your capers about the coast.

Another local spot high up on the family’s recommendations is an indoor soft play centre, American-style diner and bowling alley, 10 minutes’ drive away.

Please note

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

At least one of the party members must be aged 21 or over.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Peaceful high quality stay13/09/2021

  • Liked:

We stayed in Herdwick for 2 nights in August as a family of four.

The hut was very spacious and clean with a double bed and bunk beds, as well as a little kitchen area and settee. Outside we had our own fire pit, picnic table and chairs.

The location was great, a few miles from the beach at Mundesley and a 20 minute car ride to Bewilderwood. There was a village shop and pub close by and the campsite had some provisions for the fire pit including logs, fire lighters and the essential marshmallows!

The shared facilities were very clean. There were only two female toilets but we never had to queue or wait for them to become free. The showers were great- the water pressure and temperature just right.

Overall, I would recommend Counting Sheep as a great place to stay when visiting Norfolk.

If weather’s not with you, the huts can feel pretty cozy for a family of four. But that’s just while you’re in, of course.

  • Liked:

Well equipped, cozy shepherd’s hut (we were in Romney), helpful onsite owners, clean hot showers & clean flushing toilets. Small, quiet site (5 huts & 2 tents). Store onsite for logs, charcoal, eggs, marshmallows.

    Disliked:

The awning attached to our hut creaked in the wind & jiggled the hut a bit the first night - but this was very minor, we had a fantastic stay.

    Everything
These guys are just starting out on this adventure but it doesn’t show, it is a perfectly equipped site, good quality equipment provided and regularly cleaned, checked and serviced, always on hand to answer questions, really made to feel at home, there was nothing I disliked about the experience but the fridge is only big enough for ham, cheese, 1 pint milk so next time I’ll bring a plug in cooler box.
Because of the perfect countryside setting flip flops or waterproof shoes/ boots of some description is advisable else your trainers/ socks will get wet! Don’t let this be seen as a negative!! as the setting is beautiful, just something to note.
Liked the fact I could rotate my two cool packs by giving them to one of the family ready for the lunch bag for the days adventures, perfect night sleep both nights, I think I’d be more than happy in the two person shepherds hut even in the winter if a small fan heater was on offer, no need for a big log burner, loved the efficiency of the induction hob and the ability to move it off the counter if required, for no hassle camping with a difference, you can’t go wrong, my 3 1/2 year old loved the experience and I hope the memories last his lifetime, we even got our own personalised pebble painted in the rainbow colours to thank the NHS from the owners son who kindly left it on top of my sons football in the games area 👍🏻👊🏻 Legend
All in all I can’t praise the hard work that’s gone into this experience enough, spot on thank you x

Local attractions

There’s more Cromer (15 minutes’ drive) than just crabbing… this seaside town was once a Victorian resort and the pier and pavilion still remain. On the sandy beach, surfing and paddleboarding are some of the activities of choice – the same goes for Sea Palling beach (half an hour), where watersports such as jet skiing are in full force.

For those of you who are keen to keep on the water, The Broads (25 minutes) is just the place to hire out a boat for the day. Otherwise, you might want to opt for fish and chips on the shore in Sheringham (half an hour), where there’s a traditional seaside afternoon out, including arcades or the steam train to Holt.

Now, while the sea certainly takes some of the limelight around here, you’ll also want to map out your way to some of the attractions inland too. There’s BeWILDerwood Norfolk (25 minutes) for playgrounds and twiggle characters, but for a trip that feels a little more royal-like, perhaps you’ll want to call by (just like in the old times) the National Trust’s Blickling Estate (25 minutes) or Felbrigg Hall, Gardens and Estate (15 minutes), the latter a good shout for woodland trails and lakes.

Must see

  • Felbrigg Hall, Garden and Park (6.4 miles)
  • Blickling Hall, Gardens and Park (7.7 miles)
