The fishing pond on site

  • Quiet family-run working farm site in rural Norfolk
  • A 30-minute drive from Thetford Forest Park; 35 minutes to Hunstanton
  • Horses and dogs accommodated; fishing pond and kitchen area on site
From muddling your way down bridleways, forest trails and estates to pottering around quaysides or getting stuck into a classic Victorian seaside resort, you’ll be able to kickstart a breezy break in Norfolk from Abbey Farm Holidays. This quiet, rural site halfway between Swaffham and King’s Lynn isn’t just a good spot for the family or your assorted group of adventurers, though – dogs and horses are also accommodated on site. You’re in for a pretty cosy time here, as there’s a shower and toilet on site, as well as a small kitchen area with a fridge, microwave, kettle and dishwashing area for prepping your own food, perhaps ready for a campfire or barbecue. The site is in East Walton, one of three villages in the Westacre Estate, where footpaths and bridleways are an added convenience. The estate has a rewilding project surrounding the site, so you might catch wild ponies, cattle, pigs and other native animals while out on your wanders. This is a family-run site, so the owners will be able to point those of you with horses in the direction of good horse riding routes. You’ll also get the lowdown on where’s hot to eat out nearby – handily, there are a couple of pubs within five minutes’ drive of the site. Those of you who are down for a spot of fishing will also be happy to find that there’s a fishing pond on site stocked with tench, roach, perch and carp to round things off.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked Exceptionally quiet and useful amenities (toilet, shower, kettle, fridge and microwave). Next to a nature reserve where I saw a herd of wild horses, and I spent breakfast watching house martins playing chase and diving into the little pond.

Liked Had family staying at Hunstanton so we decided to go camping on the motorcycle.
Found this beautiful little site. Clean shower and toilet very well equipped kitchen. Owners very helpful and friendly. Peaceful rural environment. Plenty of wildlife. Nice to see red kites and martens drinking from the pond. Will definitely come back. We need a bigger tent though.

Disliked Nothing to dislike about the site but had the worst fish and chips from rumble’s at Gayton.

Liked The atmosphere as its only a small site. The animals around you and the birds, especially the red kites and the oyster catchers flying over. There is a little lake with a boat on which we made good use of! The owners are very friendly and even lent us a longer electric hook up so we could reach. We didn’t have a problem with there being only one shower and toilet and they were always clean. Fire pits are free but the wood is £5 a bag. We even got to watch some horses showjumping as we ate our evening dinner! We will definitely stay here again.

Local attractions

What kind of scenery would you rather have for your wanders? Perhaps a country house, gardens and park for your walks or cycles at Sandringham Estate (15 minutes’ drive)? The Palladian-style Holkham Hall (45 minutes) and its parklands? King’s Lynn (20 minutes) for Hanseatic town with heritage sites, the quayside and the Hanse Trail down a route taken in medieval times? Or Swaffham (15 minutes) to see all the little makings of a market town? There’s walking, cycling and wildlife spotting (if you’ve got the patience for that one) in Thetford Forest Park (half an hour). Binoculars might also come in handy for the Snettisham (25 minutes) nature reserve and beach too, where there might be pink-footed geese, knot and shelduck for the spotting. In case your visit has you craving more of the seaside, Holkham beach (50 minutes) could be your next scenic stop-off, or perhaps Hunstanton (35 minutes), where there’s a classic Victorian seaside resort with the works, including windsurfing, paddleboarding and kitesurfing.
