  • Wildlife haven in west Norfolk: walk to the beach in two minutes
  • Basic and peaceful site next to the Norfollk Coast Path
  • Barbecues and campfires allowed; shop and pub a few minute's walk away
The splendid beach near Hunstanton Camping and Glamping (dog-friendly Heacham beach, two minutes' walk away) is the only east-coast beach in Britain facing west. This means that guests here are often treated to the sight of a spectacular sunset over the sea – a real rarity for Norfolk. As well being a romantic sunset spot, this location is also a very enticing one for watersports enthusiasts, hikers and families – plus dog owners, who are welcome to bring their pet along for a holiday and a ramble along the Norfolk coast. Hunstanton Camping and Glamping is on the edge of the village of Heacham, in a peaceful wildlife haven surrounded by open fields. It's three miles from here to Snettisham, five to Hunstanton and 10 miles to Thornham, all with dog-friendly beaches and walks aplenty, or you could feel regal for the day with a trip to Sandringham – and its woodland walking paths – within 15 minutes' drive. The site has a good selection of amenities including toilets (ladies', gents' and unisex facilities), four indoor unisex showers and a number of outdoor showers. Grey waste water disposal and chemical disposal are available for touring guests, and plug sockets in washrooms mean you can charge phones or use hairdryers easily enough. Barbecues and campfires are both allowed; a local shop a minute's walk away has most supplies you should need. There's also a pub a few minutes' walk away.

Electric optional grass campervan pitch (no awning)

Liked: Stayed here recently so we could go to the wells next the sea Xmas tide parade. The site was very good considering it was out of season when we stayed. Nigel met us when we arrived with a warm welcome and showed us around the site and told us about places to go out for food and drink in the area.

The pitch was level enough not perfect but you wouldn't really notice it unless you really paid attention to it.

The facilities were fine and not far to walk to but we did have the site to ourselves for one night and we was on the 1st pitch. But definitely worth the stay.

Liked: Location

Disliked: Facilities: dirty toilets and showers, broken showers, no water in taps in ladies toilet, no hot water on site for shower or washing up

From the manager: Tatiana, this is the first we have heard of these issues, we had happy campers over the weekend and were not altered to any problems, we hope that you reported these as they would have been swiftly dealt with. We are sorry that on this occasion we have not scored a higher rating from you and that you would not return, but we are pleased that you enjoyed our fabulous location right by the beach and that despite your issues you had a great time exploring the Norfolk Coast :)

Electric optional grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Warm welcome from the owner. Location was great for the beach however, not much else around.

Disliked: Toilets were absolutely disgusting. No toilet roll in most and none were cleaned the whole time we were there. Disliked how much we paid to have a dog with us when we didn't get anything for that cost.

From the manager: Thank you Christian for taking the time to leave a review, we are so pleased that you enjoyed a warm welcome and that you found our location here eby the beach to be a great one. We are very rural and love being surrounded by the Norfolk Countryside. We are sorry that our facilities were not up to scratch on your visit, we would hope that your findings were reported as we would have had any lacks in housekeeping rectified immediately. We have reported your findings and will strive to do better going forward. We are very dog friendly and provide dog washing facilities as well as a dog friendly beach to exercise, I a not sure what else you were expecting? We could have provided towels should you have needed them:)

Electric optional grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Great location - a really short walk to the Norfolk coast.

Disliked: Sadly the site was the worst we have ever stayed on in 16 years!
It was expensive at £230 for 4 nights so we were expecting reasonably good facilities and site condition. We were sorely disappointed.

The site had no hard standing or firm pitches due to the weather softening the ground, so we were requested to camp on the hardcore path, which we duly excepted, although having submitted our vehicle dimensions this could have been communicated before we arrived. It probably wouldn't have changed our minds, however the state of the showers, and general site maintenance would have.

The site was unkempt, with litter, old camping tables, sun brolly and swing ball just left discarded and buried in the lengthy grass. On our second morning we discovered a dead hare just outside our van. Not a pleasant sight but also not great when you have a small terrier on board. I text the site manager who responded - that he 'had missed that', but it wasn't removed and stayed there for our 4 day stay! Lovely! Especially with the flies!!

But the showers really were the low point. They were so dirty, and I'm not fussy, I showered in my crocks! The walls were mouldy, the floor filthy, like a building site. The structure disheveled and the first one I used the water came out of the shower hose not the head. I didn't even venture into the toilets so can't say what they were like!

It was a real shame - It looked like there had been no attempt to regroup after the summer season. And I get that a site in October isn't going to have the bloom of the summer months, but there really is no excuse for the sate we experienced- and paying full season prices!! Really disappointed and would not recommend or ever visit again.

From the manager: Thank you Suzanne for taking the time to leave a review, we are so pleased that you enjoyed our fabulous location here by the beach, we are right on the coast path and the sunset south beach is just a 2 minute walk away. We are so sorry that you had to endure a dead hare by your pitch and the state of the facilities is really inexcusable, I have reported both to maintenance and housekeeping. We are so sorry that on this occasion you did not see us at our best, and thank you for giving us the opportunity to make improvements going forward :)

Electric optional grass campervan pitch

Liked: We really enjoyed our Campervan stay with our Labradoodle Merlin.
The access to the beach is great, as is the short walk to the pub.the site was tidy and all facilities worked and were clean.the staff were friendly. Two Muntjac deer made a visit to the site, and the site chickens provided impeckable fascination to Merlin as they roam around the site.it felt a million miles away from the rows of static caravans which are only across the road, obscured by the raised road level. We enjoyed our time here and We will return.

Disliked: There was nothing for us to dislike.

The site is behind the sea defences: watch out as you head towards the sea. The site is the last farm building on the left-hand side of the road. From the A149 at King's Lynn, turn left towards Heacham South Beach (Lamsey Lane). Then, turn left again towards the beach and turn left into the campsite when you can see the sea in front of you (roughly 1000 yards before the beach).

Local attractions

Nature fans rejoice, for there's birdwatching galore around here. Make for the RSPB reserve in Snettisham for flocks of birds around the Wash, or for RSPB Titchwell Marsh (20 minutes' drive) to see avocets, marsh harriers and pink-footed geese around its marshlands, reedbeds and freshwater lagoons. Titchwell has a wide sandy beach to investigate too, where scenery seekers can snap far-reaching views across the Wash. Boating and watersports are easily accessed just down the coast at Hunstanton. The town's also home to the rides of Rainbow Park fairground, and the Sea Life Sanctuary next door where you and curious kids can see seals, penguins, otters and other watery species. Other recommended options include Norfolk Lavender, five minutes' drive away at Caley Mill, and the 12th-century ruins of Castle Rising (15 minutes), one of the biggest and best preserved keeps in England.
