Picture the scene: unspoiled sandy beaches backed by vegetation-covered dunes; the chilly waters of the North Sea for a most invigorating buzz; and – the cherry on the cake, for some – a colony of seals. All that is within a short walk (all you have to do is scramble across the dunes, in fact) when you stay at Waxham Sands Holiday Park, half an hour’s drive from Great Yarmouth, in Norfolk. Not only does this site have direct access to the beach; it is also a five-minute walk from Horsey Gap beach, where hundreds of seal pups are born every winter (you can admire them from the dunes or from designated viewing platforms). Don’t worry if you’re here in July or August: chances are you’ll still catch a glimpse of seals relaxing on the beach or swimming. Please keep your dog on a lead at all times when you’re at Horsey Gap – and on site, for that matter. Seals are not all the wildlife you can admire round these parts. The Norfolk Wildlife Trust – Hickling Broad and Marshes (20 minutes’ drive) is home to cranes and marsh harriers, plus (between May and September) large swallowtail butterflies. Besides wildlife watching, activities include sea fishing, sailing and golf (the nearest course is on the outskirts of Great Yarmouth). If the kids are all wildlife-d out, they can burn some energy in the playground or make new friends in the games room. The site also has a shop selling local produce and drinks, plus a communal freezer and a launderette.

  • Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.
  • Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.
  • The grocery shop is open between 01/05 and 02/10.

Liked The facilities and location and staff, this is the 12th time ish we’ve come here, haven’t been for some time though now! Facilities are always clean and have soap and toilet roll. They even smell nice which for a campsite is rare. The staff are lovely too. Beach is lovely as always and you get to watch the seals!

Disliked How expensive they have made it now it’s been taken over. I know inflation makes things more expensive but the rates are very very high now. You used to be able to stay for £70 ish a week and now it’s another £100 odd.. don’t quote me on that but it’s gone up a lot. You used to be able to get fish and chips but now it’s expensive pizza. Just feels it’s lost some of its charm and has become more commercial. WiFi also just doesn’t work hardly not that that’s really a problem as we go camping to get away from “life”

Liked Staff were nice and location was good

Disliked Showers half off them didn’t lock . And was right over the other side of the camp. There was not enough space between each vehicle.

Liked Loved the food carts, the shop, the crazy golf and the facilities were well maintained.

Disliked Could have done with more shower blocks nearer to the other end of the site and wifi was rubbish when by your tent, well non existent.

- mostly flat pitch
- clear signage throughout the camp
- helpful, friendly reception staff and convenient shop
- play areas for children
- multiple toilet blocks and washing up facilities

Disliked - would have liked a choice of pitch (pre allocated which I didn’t realise when booking)
- a second block of showers at the other end of the site
- poor mobile reception made communication between family members harder

Sitting on a canal whose banks are often grazed by cattle, National Trust - Horsey Windpump (five minutes’ drive) cuts a fine – and pretty iconic – figure in the middle of the Broads. Built in 1912, it has had a pretty rough history punctuated by floods and lightning strikes. Today, visitors can climb to the top for views of Horsey Mere. Great Yarmouth (half an hour) has a remarkably wide sandy beach backed by attractions such as the Merrivale Model Village, with a miniature golf course; the Pleasure Beach Gardens playground; a Ferris wheel; and SEA LIFE Great Yarmouth, with its underwater tunnels. The whole family can play dress-up at the National Trust - Elizabethan House Museum, on the River Yare. At BeWILDerwood Norfolk (half an hour), kids can navigate treetop mazes, hurl themselves down ziplines or build a den. The park also arranges for seasonal events featuring crafting activities, storytelling and puppet shows.
