  • Pop-up wild camping in Norfolk woodland on the edge of West Dereham
  • Ely or King’s Lynn 30 minutes' drive; Old Hunstanton beach 50 minutes
  • Off-grid site with lots of wildlife; shops and pubs 10 minutes’ drive
Ready for some honest-to-goodness wild camping? With family-friendly pitches in a diverse young woodland with open grassy clearings and mown paths? Right on the outskirts of the pretty Norfolk village of West Dereham? If you answer ‘yes’ to all three questions, then the pop-up Rosehip Wood Wild Camping is the spot for you. Here, you can pitch up at a campsite completely enclosed by fences – kids can roam free-range-style, make dens using branches and explore the 'secret cedar hideaway' – and use the large, flat meadow for recreational games like football and rounders. It's surrounded by trees and lush greenery, so watch out for wild birds and deer, and look forward to the sunset on clear nights. Because of the lack of light pollution, it's possible to observe a night sky full of stars when weather conditions are right. There are stunning long-distance river walks along the relief channel within a 10-minute walk of the site. Alternatively, walks along the River Wissey are less than an hour's walk away along a footpath through local farmland; maps are available on site. As befits proper wild camping, facilities are on the scant side. A compost loo, mains water and picnic tables are available on the camping field, but there is no hot water for showers and no electricity – be prepared for the latter and pack torches and batteries for any wanderings after dark. Handily, Downham Market is only 10 minutes’ drive away, just in case you need supplies or feel like a pint in one of the town’s historic pubs.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked We absolutely loved our stay!! We were greeted by our friendly host Juliet upon arrival and made to feel so welcome. We were able to pick our favourite spot in the woodland and enjoyed every minute of our peaceful escape in nature, surrounded by wildlife and stunning surroundings which we were able to walk and explore.
The whole experience of being here, helped you get back to basics and soak up everything going on around you. Couldn't recommend more highly!

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Perfect site for a wild camp feel! The owner messaged me during my arrival day with all the details and arrangements I needed. The site for camping is set in a secluded wooded area, beautiful setting for camping with pitches and communal areas hidden amongst the woodland clearings. Water tap and a clean and well maintained compost toilet provides the basics for a wild camp. I even had the site to myself for the night. Will definitely stay again!

Non-electric grass and earth motorhome pitch

Liked We had a brilliant overnight stay at Rosehip Wood with our young grandchildren — arriving midday Tuesday and leaving by 11am Wednesday. To our delight, we had the whole site to ourselves, which sent the kids gleefully into full Lord of the Flies mode (the joyful kind, thankfully!).

Cooking over coals, toasting marshmallows, and stargazing before bed — it was everything you want from proper wild camping. The simplicity of the site really adds to the charm. There’s fresh drinking water and a compost loo, which some might consider “basic,” but for our grandchildren, it was a perfect little reality check and part of the adventure.

We had the bonus of our campervan’s leisure batteries, solar, and an outdoor shower — but to be honest, it’s the raw experience that makes Rosehip Wood special. A peaceful, off-grid escape that gives children (and adults) a gentle reminder of how little we actually need.

We’ll definitely be back — but this time, maybe with a few more marshmallows!

Non-electric grass and earth motorhome pitch

Liked Peaceful, sheltered spot.
The hosts checked up on me, which, as a solo female, I found very reassuring.
Very few amenities, but the composting toilet area was very clean.
I was there as an emergency stop, so need to return, better prepared, to experience it fully. It is definitely worth a visit.

Non-electric grass and earth motorhome pitch

Liked This was such a find.. if you're looking for a camp experience in a natural wooded area where there is peace, quiet and relaxation, this is the site for you.

If you want to get back to natural quiet where the only sounds are birds and the breeze, then you've found your spot.

All of the pitches are nestled in trees and bushes to give a real sense of seclusion and privacy.. you could be here when it's full and not feel overlooked by anyone else.

There's a wide open communal area you can use if you wanted to be sociable where you can sit in front of the open fire pit with others..

There's also a compost toilet and a water tap.. all you need for a back to basic peaceful time..

Disliked ... telling you lot about it - STAY AWAY...!!

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked This was a lovely campsite! There were plenty of places to stay that were secluded and plenty of shade for dogs too! It was a really friendly campsite and as a female traveller I felt totally at ease and safe there. There is a huge field to walk in also and plenty of campfires on site. The owner was absolutely lovely and I will be a regular customer at this campsite!
