  • Wild camping in Norfolk woodland on the edge of West Dereham
  • Ely or King’s Lynn 30 minutes' drive; Old Hunstanton beach 50 minutes
  • Off-grid site with lots of wildlife; shops and pubs 10 minutes’ drive
Ready for some honest-to-goodness wild camping? With family-friendly pitches in a diverse young woodland with open grassy clearings and mown paths? Right on the outskirts of the pretty Norfolk village of West Dereham? If you answer ‘yes’ to all three questions, then Rosehip Wood Wild Camping is the spot for you. Here, you can pitch up at a campsite completely enclosed by fences – kids can roam free-range-style, make dens using branches and explore the 'secret cedar hideaway' – and use the large, flat meadow for recreational games like football and rounders. It's surrounded by trees and lush greenery, so watch out for wild birds and deer, and look forward to the sunset on clear nights. Because of the lack of light pollution, it's possible to observe a night sky full of stars when weather conditions are right. There are stunning long-distance river walks along the relief channel within a 10-minute walk of the site. Alternatively, walks along the River Wissey are less than an hour's walk away along a footpath through local farmland; maps are available on site. As befits proper wild camping, facilities are on the scant side. Two composting loos, mains water and picnic tables are available on the camping field, but there is no hot water for showers and no electricity – be prepared for the latter and pack torches and batteries for any wanderings after dark. Handily, Downham Market is only 10 minutes’ drive away, just in case you need supplies or feel like a pint in one of the town’s historic pubs.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Beautiful campsite, basic and wild in all the best ways. Nice private nooks created by the trees. Great value. Juliet and Jacob were both very helpful and welcoming, was also handy to be able to buy wood for the fire pit. We’ll be back!

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Loved this site, back to the basics and felt secure and secluded but also a nice area to let the children play especially in the little hideaway den my two girls Loved it (age 2 and 4)

Disliked Get the site being natural but where we had to camp due to size of tent brambles that were cut were left on floor. It wasn't bad just something we had to be careful of with an air tent

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Quiet, great place for kids to play, the owner explained all the fruit we could forage and offered up some great recommendations for activities. The apples left in a basket were also very tasty. The table and chairs at the campsite made it extra comfortable. The campsite itself had a curated range of different trees available.

Disliked Nothing, it was exactly what was expected for a wild campsite, composting toilet and all.
