Riverside Lake and Leisure: Touring pitch

General

  • Peaceful adults-only holiday park 10 minutes' drive from Ramsey
  • A half-hour drive to Ely; 20 minutes to Decoy Lakes coarse fishery
  • Fishing on site, either in the lake or on River Nene

Which is better – lake fishing or river fishing? Decide for yourself at Riverside Lake and Leisure, a Cambridgeshire holiday park that has both right there on site.

As you may imagine for a site in the Fens and on the banks of the River Nene, it’s all rather scenic around here – and it’s pretty peaceful too, as this is an adults-only site (although you're welcome to bring dogs along).

It all makes for an excellent setup for a break centred around fishing, in which you’ll be free to merrily meander between lakeside and river shore as you wish (and if that’s not enough, take an outing to Decoy Lakes, one of the UK’s leading coarse fisheries, 20 minutes’ drive away).

That’s not to say that it all has to be about the fishing though: this site is equally well set for rural rambles or bike rides, or for days out in Ely and Cambridge. Closer to home, the local town of Ramsey (10 minutes’ drive) has two golf courses, and there’s another in Pidley (20 minutes) along with a bowling alley.

Between all those local towns and villages (along with bigger Huntingdon and Peterborough, 15 miles away) you should be all sorted for restaurants, pubs and takeaways, plus supplies for picnics or for evenings by the barbecue back on site.

A bathroom block on site has separate male and female toilets and showers (but please note that unfortunately these are not wheelchair-friendly).

Please note

Swimming in the lake is not allowed.

Tents are not accepted at this park.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

A cable measuring at least 15 metres is needed for the electric hook-ups.

Guests under the age of 18 are not allowed on site.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Our first trip out in our first caravan, and really glad we found this place. The owner was friendly, welcoming and flexible. The site was clean and well kept, with a pretty fishing lake surrounded by shrubs and trees. The toilet and shower block was modern and immaculate. We will definitely come back, and hubby will bring his fishing gear.

Lovely site, Dave was very friendly. We were the only people there due to the bad weather. The toilets and showers were spotless.

    Disliked:

The fact that our heating broke down in our van at midnight and by 2am it was so cold and with a red light constantly flashing we couldn’t sleep so returned home.

This site is in a lovely fenland location, which was really peaceful and quiet. The site is quite new and so the facilities were clean and well looked after.

There is a little fishing lake on site, which was really nice to walk the dogs around on the sunny autumnal mornings.

Very peaceful, not bothered by anyone. Views were lovely. River fishing was good.

    Disliked:

There were dogs that came from nearby that marked their territory on our awning and fishing kit and upset our dog a number of times. There was very little mobile phone signal and definitely no WiFi. Lake fishing was ok, but not great. No pot washing facilities.

Sadley, neighbouring property owner leaves dogs out to bark, we left 3 days early, due to experiencing 6 hours upto 11.15pm of barking, and being woken at 6am due to noise of preparing dog food banging pots and calling dogs continously.

Local attractions

Fishing for some more wildlife-geared activities? Then, you’ll be in a good place to do so, as the Lattersey Local Nature Reserve (20 minutes' drive) has a good load of animals and plants and the Raptor Foundation has a birds of prey display (25 minutes). For more of the actual fishing, if you haven’t already had your fill on site, Decoy Lakes coarse fishery (20 minutes) is a short drive away.

Onto some new horizons… it may be a little further out, but Cambridge (an hour) has all the makings of a good afternoon out, from college tours to punting on the river or browsing through the Fitzwilliam Museum. Ely Cathedral (half an hour) is another of those good historic sites, and there’s another cathedral in Peterborough (half an hour), along with a greyhound track and the Nene Valley Railway.

That’s one heritage railway, but there’s another at the Fenland Light Railway (five minutes’ walk), which has a narrow-gauge steam train and locomotives. Once you’ve had a good look at the world of the railways, Ramsey Rural Museum (10 minutes’ drive) will move you onto countryside life in the 17th century.

Must see

  • Peterborough Cathedral (8.7 miles)
  • Ely Cathedral (16.1 miles)
  • Burghley House (18.7 miles)

  • Houghton Mill (11.0 miles)
